Dungeon cores defy categorization. Creature? Object? Location? Is it alive, or is it just a simulation of life? Is it sapient?

Most importantly: Is it alive enough to die? Is a core regenerating from almost nothing the same core it once was, or is it an entirely new thing? In that division of life between before and after, between the forgotten and the remembered, is that where death resides? Is this a kind of rebirth?
