- DreadPirateArianeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A particularly cyberpunk-feeling take on urban fantasy, packed with tantalising worldbuilding from the get-go and with a rapidly developing cast full of fascinating characters sporting unique narrative voices. I highly recommend checking this out; it's updating frequently and there's a solid backlog of content to look forward to - I know I'll be keeping up with it. Advanced review to come once there's a bit more of the story up on RR.
- LilyLitanyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have to say that I always struggle with worldbuilding, specifically the way I pace out information in a story. Revealing too much or too little at a time is a weakness of mine, and it's made much clearer when I see it done right. Everything comes together so seamlessly that I didn't notice how much about the setting I was learning until I already knew it.
None of this is to say that the other aspects are slacking, either. Our trio of protagonists have very little common ground, but play off each excellently, each with a voice distinctive enough to tell them apart even in busy scenes. There's a certain poetry to the writing style, too, that lets you visualize scenes easily without going into long, dull descriptions of every setpiece. I've never felt lost, I've never had to backtrack and reread a sentence, and I've never had a misunderstanding on what certain terms or elements are.
There's a few small errors and contrivances, like we all make and do, but they don't stand out enough to warrant any real criticism of them.
It's meaty, it's polished, and there's so much care in here that I can't say anything with the work is actually a weakness. I'm astounded this is the author's first work.
Great pacing, excellent characters, phenomenal setting. Can't recommend it enough!
