- zizawahRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am a fan of divine apostasy so this is a welcome addition to that universe. Love the cross references and looking forward to all the fun coming Ash’s way! So far the story is moving along at a fast clip and very enjoyable! Ash definitely is not idealistic like Ruwen nor carefree like Sift. He’s more jaded and mature. Being an Earthling he’s also more identifiable, a little more real in a way. It’s fun seeing the fantastic in a mundane world.
- HDMahRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is great! As a big fan of A.F Kay’s other series Divine Apostasy I knew this one would be great as well. It has a very interesting start that hints at a much larger world that is epic. It also has some awesome action and a unique magic system that feels like it will take our MC to very big heights. This book is a must read!
- TheFalseOneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0From the guy who wrote “Shade’s First Rule” this story jumps right into the action and has a lot of fun, interesting worldbuilding!
The hero has been learning secret ancient arts from his grandpa but never took it seriously… until now!
Quite fun so far. Can’t wait to see where this one goes! - TheSandsOfDeceptionRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Sometimes, in a 0.5 star review, you'll see someone crying "show, don't tell!", and in general that is good advice. So far, this story has been a great example of what to do: From the beginning of the story, you get the sense that everyone and everything involved has existed before the first scene. This may be because this is set in the same world as another series (as far as other reviews have led me to believe), but not having read that series hasn't stopped me from enjoying the feeling of a world that has already been built before any of this story begins, and we are just being shown a moment in time in that world.
At times all of this can lead to you feeling initially confused about the what, where and why of a scene, but the writing is of a high enough quality that with a little bit of thought you can figure out some idea of what is happening.
I wouldn't go as far as saying this is a masterpiece of writing, but it's a class above brain popcorn and the time that the author has spent on this shines through. The strong grammar and easy-to-read writing style doesn't hurt things, either.
I'd be happy enough to pay for writing I enjoy this much, and it is one of life's small joys that it is completely free. - White Dream LotusRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Divine Awakening on Royal Road is a compelling web novel that skillfully blends elements of action, adventure, and fantasy. The story follows the protagonist's journey as they navigate a world where individuals possess powerful abilities, and the overarching theme of awakening powers adds an intriguing layer of depth.
The novel’s strength lies in its world-building. The author paints a vivid picture of a universe brimming with mystery and potential, where divine beings and supernatural forces influence the fate of mortals. The power system is well-thought-out, and the protagonist’s gradual growth keeps readers engaged as they uncover new abilities, face increasingly formidable enemies, and explore the world’s hidden secrets.
Character development is another highlight. The protagonist is relatable, with a solid mix of vulnerability and determination, and the side characters contribute significantly to the narrative. They aren’t just bystanders but active participants in shaping the story’s trajectory.
The pacing of Divine Awakening is generally well-managed, with a good balance between action scenes and character-driven moments. However, like many web novels, there are occasional lulls in the plot where exposition or world-building might slow things down a bit. But for readers who enjoy diving deep into the lore and intricate details of a fictional universe, these moments can be rewarding.
Overall, Divine Awakening is a captivating read that fans of progression fantasy and divine themes will likely appreciate. It has room for growth, but the solid foundation and engaging narrative make it a promising work on Roya
l Road. - lordnikelasRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0So: Right away, this story is a tie-in, almost a spinoff, of the author's main series, Divine Apostasy. There's a lot of characters and details that carry over from those books, and you'd have to get through... 8-9 volumes, to understand a lot of the references that are coming from there. If you're coming in fresh, this may be a slightly tougher read. However also: This IS it's own story, as well. Ruwen Starfield and his partner, the ability to overthink every situation, are only tangentially related.
So, if you want to read a story about a hard-working boy who has practiced his martial arts diligently, every day, since he was saved from a grisly, snake-related fate, and is deeply in touch with his chakras, and occasionally doesn't have to have a problem with killing some guys, this is worth a read. (There's eventually some LitRPG elements, levels and spells and stats.) - QuintuscusRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Listen, I really love when people want their work to succeed, and push effort and time into a project. I really do appreciate it too.
However.. It might be time to let this one go, chief.
I wish I could write a positive review about the systems you’re using and the explanations, but it might do for you to take a good writers’ class on how to take on writing these kinds of fiction stories.. - ThatHydeKidRoyal Road★★★ 2.5Very interesting story, a young OP protagonist. It is showing a lot of promise. So far the overpowered nature is not hurting the story, but it is a challenging road to follow, but it is not impossible. I hope this continues as well as it has started.
Reasonable character development, with a diversity of believable people. As I said it shows a lot of promise. I find it better than the original series, but it is not clear the author is seriously engaged with this story. I wish I understood the update schedule better, and it will be interesting if such an OP MC can keep my interest. - EsZeusRoyal Road★★ 1.5I will try my best to explain why I think this story is too unpolished, messy and in it's current state unreadable.
The early chapters are a mess. Why? Because the reader gets thrown into random new words, wordings and scenes without any explanation. No world building. No character building. Just pure madness. As a reader you have to keep going to just try to understand what is meant by what and what is currently happening in the scene you are reading.
The Author expects the reader to just go with the flow, but there is no flow. It's just stumbling from one paragraph to the next, from one chapter to the next. Exactly because of my explanation above.
While trying to be mysterious and setting things in such a scene is normally not a bad idea, but the execution itself here is so badly done, it is just thanks to sheer willpower that let's you read through these early chapters.
I can't recommend the story in it's current state, sorry.
