Description
Lady Dawn expected to die. After casting her soul to the wind, taking a one-in-a-million chance to escape the wretched dungeons of Taegrin Caelum, the once-caged songbird of the Asclepius wishes nothing more than to find her Hearth and warn them of the coming danger. Instead, she’s found herself a shade, anchored to a young man who knows far too much—and with far less hope than she’d started with.
Toren Daen, for his part, only wanted to make it home safely. Now he’s in a world taken straight from the page, questioning what is real and what is fiction, and scrambling to make something worthwhile. And with his foresight, there’s only one way that Toren can see to keep this new world safe: prevent the descent of the Legacy. But those in power will not make it easy: Nico Sever is in a league of power all on his own, and Arthur Leywin bears the burden of Fate a continent away. In this familiar-yet-not world of mana, monsters, and looming deities, any misstep along the roads of Alacrya and the High Sovereign’s Dominion could lead to a Fate worse than death.
But what is death to a phoenix? With a burning secret in his mana core, knowledge of the future, and a maelstrom of fears and questions, Toren might just survive to be more than what Lady Dawn expected him to be. He might just survive to waylay the encroaching tide of death in the proxy war between raging asura clans.More than all of that, he might justlive.(Semi-SI into Alacrya, character-focused. Updates Tuesday/Saturday. Crossposted on WN, SB, Wattpad, and Ao3.)

- A7.belRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0First time writing a detailed review but there's no way I won't make one for this masterpiece so cut me some slack😂
First of all, the writing quality is unmatched. I've read a lot of novels and fanfictions but this is easily my favourite in terms of quality and writing style alongside TBATE (when it was at its peak). l've been saving LOTM and SS for later so i can't compare them to DN but quality wise especially after it improved (which happened gradually very early on) i don't think it will lose to any of them. The writing style is my personal favourite, i love the way TMK writes but it's mostly opinion based.
Story development: It's a slow-paced story but it's perfectly written, i know most of yall on webnovel care the most about strength and the MC gets Strong very fast but because of the insane word count and how the author wrote the events it doesn't feel forced or rushed. The MC’s mana and aether path are also very unique and have insane potential. The author doesn't give a single fuck about canon as well. After a certain point literally nothing is the same so you don't have to worry about that.
Character design: This is my fav part of the story, the characters are just written perfectly. Their emotions, thoughts, Reasoning... everything is conveyed perfectly. The character development in this is so good I can't put it into words. He improved every important character that has been shown. They are all better than their "canon" counterparts (when you read this you will come to accept that TM's work was just a fanfiction). The love interest, the mc's parent figure, his friends/allies, his enemies, his elders.., they are all insanely well written with a lot of depth. They also have agency unlike "Canon". The plot actually moves forward whether the mc is present or not. Of course when the other characters are written so well the MC won't be worse. Do note that he's different from most mc's on this app. He's a genuine good guy and that won't change. The struggles h - ArcanaVitaeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A Masterfully done Self Insert in a way that does right by the Self Inserted Character, the world he's inserted into, and those who live in the world.
Seeing Toren slowly grown and adapt to living in the world going from someone who's struggling to fit in and know know his place, and then becoming someone who's grown through his experiences in ways that are mostly for the better but sometimes for the worse as well has been compelling. It's not just his growth from someone who can barely survive to someone who can truly be counted among the Strong of the world, but it's also who he is as a person. He's being forced to live in a broken death world and is struggling to maintain his morals, humanity and ability to connect to others. And the thing is far all that he gets kicked in the teeth and knocked down, he does a pretty good job of still being a good person who's trying his best.
The world and magic system of The Beginning After The End is really fascinating, and while Toren is no doubt a prodigy who's advanced extremely quickly due to circumstances, a top tier teacher and loads of talents. He's still someone who's always needing to play catch up because for all he's growing and for the several secrets he learns both due to acquired in and out of character knowledge, he's still young and the Old Monsters of the setting can wipe him out. Also there's only so much raw strength and ability can do, the proper mindset, social skills, life skills and even luck are needed for Toren to survive and thrive in the world he's found himself in.
Also the various characters both Original and already present are treated with a lot of love and respect. They feel like people, dynamic and able to grow, while also being intelligent and shaped by their personal and cultural circumstances. Toren is able to form genuine bonds and have interesting interactions that make the story and characters all the more compelling and fascinating. - AyzReadsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I normally read this on Wattpad but decided to review it here to spread the word. The community is amazing and chill, everyone on the discord is so fun to hang out with. The story is very well written and keeps me always wanting more. It is a very slow burn but that doesn’t really matter since the characters work better that way. While TurtleMe butchered his female cast TMK actually wrote them as something more than slop. The events of this story are beginner friendly and very standalone, so you don’t even need to read the (DN ripoff) TBaTe you can just jump right in.
- Bread.Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm really glad I found this. The world-building — which was sadly largely glossed over in TBATE, especially Alacrya and Ephoetus — is incredibly well done and truly immersive. I'm eager to learn more about both.
Another strong point of this story is the characters. Canon characters blend seamlessly with non-canon ones, all undergoing meaningful development while still staying true to their core ideals.
The humor is also worth mentioning — the jokes and lighthearted moments feel natural and unforced, making the interactions feel more organic.
After reading 330 chapters, and with how disappointing TBATE has been for a while, I honestly prefer DN over the "canon" version. For me, it's become my new canon. (Sometimes it's actually hard to remember what's canon and what isn't.)
The quality is so high that I wouldn't even call it a fanfic at this point — it's more like an alternate timeline.
Overall: 10/10 story. If I could forget everything and read it all again for the first time, I absolutely would.
Thanks for writing it, TMKight! - BumblebeepotatoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The end to volume 5 was truly amazing. I honesty wish this was Canon, but it's carved it's own special path to become something more. As tbate gets closer to it's ending I'm not even sure which story I'm hyped for. I'm very invested in this story and I'm seriously surprised it's not more popular.
- YaksharkRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Discordant note answers a question, what if the world of The Beginning After The end was in the hands of another person from earth. As the premise seems like the average fanfic posted on AO3, TMKnight puts his characters in places unseen in the original cannon. The creative liberties taken to make sure the story can be read on its own by mentioning *some* elements of the original novel makes the entire story readable, even without the 490+ chapters of the original cannon (however for the intended expirience it is advised to read up on the original source material to understand most of the mechanics of TBATE, and the plentiful references).
While its unavoidable that fan favorite characters from the original novel will make an apearance, even some of the less favored characters are developed further than in the original cannon along with the favorites (mainly ironing out inconsistencies among *certain* characters). The main difference with the characters of Discordant note and the original cannon is that they are fleshed out beyond comprehension using, more creative liberties and they interact with each other far more, giving the feeling of genuine friendship.
The worldbuilding is plentiful and helps with immersion. Due to, again, more creative liberties from the original story, each continent feel unique and every region different from each other so you know where you are, dispite not being told so directly.
Dispite the original story being, albeit indirectly, a writers sandbox, Discordant note is the perfect example of the sandbox being expanded into something that can be called a work of art. - HeWhoHathNameRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The quality of this piece of literature is undermined by the title "fanfiction." This work features story arcs and plot developments that pull the reader to and fro—unless you can see the future, I'm entirely certain you'll be caught off guard by whatever this maniac is cooking!
Before this is a fanfiction of The Beginning After The End, this is a story about the otherworldly adventures of Toren Daen. This piece is an expansion of the existing lore of TBATE, and if you find the early world-building interesting, expect much greater things in the later chapters.
If you have any outspoken fears of this story being discontinued, quell them. There is much more plot to come. Do be warned, however, that the author has explicitly referred to his main character as a "glow-stick" which must be cracked so that it may glow brighter... But every chapter is well-researched and faithful to TBATE, so he makes up for it.
For much of the early story, this work should be treated as a stand-alone piece of fiction with well-written cameos from some beloved TBATE characters which takes place in a truly detailed rendition of Alacrya. Chronologically, this takes place before some of the events of greater significance in TBATE canon, so the plot divergence will begin in earnest if you stick through the wonderfully written early portions of the story!
Before anyone else, this is the story of Toren Daen. Many characters will be important to the plot and close to Toren's heart (...some more literally than others), but expect Arthur Leywin to gain greater importance later in the story. So, try to enjoy the ride and let your anticipation grow! - RockSword29Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I don't really fan fiction. Just hope i"ll like this novel. If it good, hope someday this novel will become a canon parallel universe. Damn, 50 words. Hope my journey on this novel GREAT. Read TBATE for 5 years.
Some mind like the guy review before me. TurtleMe really beep up girls characters. - VmmorganRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Really well formulated self- insert story in a grim dark world making life just a little more beautiful and helping people who deserve it love happier lives! I have been waiting for a story just like this for years, so thank you. I probably most appreciate the single main love interest of Seris as she finally gets a happy ending she deserves along with with the happy sibling stories. 5 stars for perfect wish fulfillment.
- GooseTime6000Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Well mark me surprised. This is by far the best fanfiction I've ever read before. In truth the word fanfiction does not truly give justice to this work, a better way to describe Discordant Note(DN) would be an extension of TBATE though a WHAT IF perspective, giving new light to the original story's world. And DN is written in such a way that those who have not previously read TBATE can still appreciate it. I can confidently say that this is one of my favorite fan... no... web novels in general. And in some ways even surpasses TBATE.
The Grammar wile not perfect, is in many ways better then the original. How should I describe it? Well the way TMKnight conducts his words in a way that makes TBATE fill lacking in some ways.(Though this is just my opinion) Mainly the emotional parts, it consistently makes me feel a myriad of emotions, whether that be grief, joy, betrayal, poignancy and so on. And over all conveys a more nuanced environment that Toren finds him self in.
The characters are definitely a highlight of the story. First off all the characters old and new fit in seamlessly with the original story, a testament to my original statement that this fanfiction is more like an expansion. Another thing that most fanfictions yet alone many web novels fail in is character causation, when characters do an act that isn't necessarily logical or in their interest you understand why, the characters don't feel contrived or forced, it makes since why they do these actions no matter how hard it may be for us readers who have a more objective perspective. Whether it be because of their nature or their limited perspectives it always make sense.Another thing that really surprised me was the new light we get to see some of the original characters in that illuminate the depths.
SPOILER----------------------------(The primary example Seris and the romance really impressed me)-------------------------------
The World Building Is great. And one of the biggest ways that this story has ov
