Description

Paradiso is a beautiful place. Theonlyplace.

For those who live on the Pillars, it's as the name implies. Paradise. They lead fruitful, safe, and mostly happy lives, tens of thousands of feet above the sickened earth.

But not for those that live in the Hole.

Emotions and concepts are given form by Aether, the energy that permeates the world. Reality bends from concentrated horror and despair. Barely comprehensible anomalies can appear at any time, twisting places, things, and people into unrecognizable beasts. What used to be wildlife is just as corrupted, monstrous, and predatorial. Billions live across Paradiso, scraping together what meager communities they can, governments and cities built in a pale imitation of what life looks like far above.

Leon was a nobleman. He was meant to be the head of one of the great six pillars, one of the grandest and most powerful human beings in the world.

But now, he's in the dirt with the rest of them. He's forced to contend with an unfamiliar world, one that devours hope and spits it out, chewed up and broken. He must become a Hunter, and slay as many anomalies as it takes to earn his way back up the Pillar, where he can take his rightful throne back.

A daunting task. Luckily for him, he's immortal.

Didn't initially plan to do one of these 'what to expect' sections, but I figure I probably should.

This story is heavily inspired by the works of Project Moon, and those familiar will know that the content warnings are not a joke.

The progression system is via Artifacts, items that give specific powers and equal drawbacks, being mixed and matched as the amount of them grows. However, this story isn't the type that will really dive into that and is far more focused on character and the world. Make no mistake, however, there will be psychological torment, bombastic battles, and deranged humor in somewhat equal measures.

The last thing to note is that the protagonist is a classist dick. He gets over it soon enough, so try not to let that turn you off. It's very much an intentional character flaw.

Nothing but praise as of chapter 21. Enthralling grimdark with promises to develop a lighter tone as Leon grows as a character. Loved every bit of this book. The trauma and gore warnings need to be heeded as the story is very detailed with vivid descriptions of Leon crawlingy through piles of flesh. Disco Inferno's characters, setting, and tone are beyond exceptional. Extremely excited to see where the author takes this novel!

    Pros:
Interesting and surprisingly enjoyable take on the asshole former rich kid MC trope.
    Really cool and immersive worldbuilding.
The author pulls absolutely no punches as the action is pretty brutal. (Could be a negative if you're squeamish.)
    Cons:
Would benefit from some light editing to fix occasional grammatical errors and some awkward word choices.

The writing is on point, the character is engaging, the world is intriuging and the plot is fascinating. I cannot wait to see how this story goes further, but I know it deserves more attention.
Currently looking forward to why he was forced into his current job, the state of affairs of his home, what caused Paradiso to become the last bastion for humanity and if there are people alive elsewhere that Paradiso has no knowledge of. Also interesting that they have genetic manipulation tech, but I'm unsure if they have global comms tech. Do they have satellites that have analyzed the state of the planet?

It's hard to judge this one. The mc so far is an unlikeable sociopath/narcissist in a bad situation but silver spoon in every other way. His concern for anyone other than himself is non-existent. He's the elitist better than you asshole that by all rights should be the villain everyone hates. It strongly depends on where the author goes with this on whether it will just be another edgelord mc or one with depth and it's too early to tell.
The world building is good enough though largely undefined so far, I get the feeling the simple question of where does their food come from has not been answered or thought of yet but as it's not story relevant yet so far it doesn't matter. Basically it feels a little ungrounded but easily in the realm of suspended disbelief.
Characters are starting to flesh out, it's hard to judge as this is a more trauma/action focused so will take a while. It has the potential and there is more depth hinted so characters don't feel cardboard, but we haven't gotten to know any of them except the mc who is a mixture of fallen lord/chosen one trope with more angst than you can shake a stick at.
Grammar is good, I didn't notice anything bad which is when you know it's good, but also not visceral and gripping so published book quality but not award winning.
All in all this story is a bundle of potential that hasn't hit the hook yet, but it feels like I'm just reviewing it four or five chapters too early and could easily be amazing. Id solidly recommend giving it a shot to see if it resonates with you unless you hate grimdark.
