- Jamond ArothRoyal Road★★★ 3.0This review is based off of only the chapters currently available on RR as of the time of this review. So far, the story comes across as very noir, which could be good or bad depending on one's tastes. The writing seems competent, I didn't notice many errors at least. The story feels somewhat fast-paced and, I'm guessing, tightly contained. It didn't really hook me but it wasn't as if I disliked it either, with one exception.
Light Spoiler:
Namely, I kinda got emotional and/or tonal whiplash; I mean, first there's this gruesome murder scene, one where someone the main character knew was at least found dead. Even if the victim was just an acquaintance, you'd think it'd have had a bit more of an impact. Especially when the main character later thinks about how he wants to kiss a married woman he once dated years ago and later enjoys riding in that woman's husband's Lambo. I get the guy is a homicide detective but it just comes across as callous if not slightly sociopathic to me. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but I didn't like that aspect of the character.
