James Von Berkshire was the sole survivor of one of the most prominent families that ruled his realm. The once-legendary family was among the first to discover the secrets of their world and amass an army of PLAYERS.But the mistake of one idiot destroyed the entire family; even exiled members like James were hunted down in the hope of extracting the secret of the Von Berkshire ancient bloodline.By sheer luck, James survived his encounter with the scion responsible for eradicating the Von Berkshire. After a decade of training, James succeeds in his quest for revenge, but the scion's death won't heal the pain in James's heart. What James truly desired was to seehis family again. Over the years, he gained a few allies he considered family, but it was never the same.On his last mission with his team, James found a book that might've been the key to changing his past and creating a better future for his friends and family, but right before he had the chance to activate the book, he was imprisoned in one of the worst prisons throughout the realms. After five dreadful years, James found his chance to escape and hopefully make things right.

- LubjubRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Style - Despite my fate blends dark fantasy along with a mix of action and strong world building elements. All mixed up with a nice dose of LitRPG goodness. Through a 3rd person narrative that drives the story along with occasional in-depth insights to the thoughts of the main character James which help to build up his character. There's well timed comedy moments that really add a bit of spice to the story that was cool to.
Story - James is an intriguing protagonist that starts the story in a surprisingly fun way with a prison escape. Some well timed and unexpected comedy scenes and then the continuation into continuing chapters blend to create that sense of actions really do have consequences. The world building is great as we start to learn more about the unique things like PLAYERS and SCIONS that are part of the game-like system in place and then can't otherworldly entities like TIME and FATE are weaved into the story. This is a story with a ton of urgency to it and James needs to get himself in gear fast!
Grammar - A little bit of editing needs to be done so the pacing doesn't trip as often in the earlier chapters. For example merging some description heavy paragraphs and rewording it to really make it shine. Other than that it's great.
Characters - It's hard not to like James. From his introduction he's already about as low as you can be and you can't help but feel sorry for him. He's relatable with his relationship dynamics and attitudes towards people and yet I think how grey of a character he is too. TIME plays a big role with him from where I've read up to and acts as a sort of spirit-like guide in the form of 3 differently aged characters. I think this character will be the source of a lot on the direction the story goes. The rest of the cast build the story in other ways. Such as Heather James step mother initially comes across as a bit of a nasty sod, but over time we learn that's not necessarily the case. It's a story full of complex characters that wil - Black2408Royal Road★★★★ 4.0I read throughout the entire book (sorry for not leaving comments on every chapter, I'm mostly a silent reader!) and I have to say, the idea is fantastic:
James, a man stripped from his family after stealing a book from a Scion (basically an overpowered being capable of cracking every bone in your body with just a snap of a finger), is abruptly taken into a tower owned and wardened by Lord Poxs.
After finally escaping from the tower with TIME, he then yearns for vengeance against the ones who hurt him and heal the ones who helped him.
After that brief description, you'd say that the idea may fit the execution, right? Well, half and half. The grammar itself isn't bad other than a few mistakes here and there and the style is honestly a whole lot more unique than I had anticipated. But the characters need a few more characteristical pieces to flesh out and maybe through additional chapter releases, that possibility may become a reality!
Alex and TIME are also great additional pieces to not only the lore, but also the character list. Though, they're gonna need more than 6 chapters to scope their true emotional value into fruition.
Other than that, great premise of a story, just needs some time to flesh out the details and edit some things in between! - O.P.H.A.N.I.M.Royal Road★★★★ 4.0Despite My Fate is upfront with what kind of story it seeks to tell: a violent story about righting past wrongs and making a better future for yourself and the ones you love.
It just so happens that the better future will be paid for with the blood and sinew of James Von Berkshire’s enemies!
I will say, the first few chapters could have benefited from a slower pace, but the story is a “redo fantasy” first and foremost.
There are also some grammatical issues here and there, but not enough to truly hamper the story being told.
There’s also a decent amount of humor juxtaposed with the brutality, which is much appreciated.
Overall, Despite My Fate will entertain readers of the redo-type stories with ease.
