- BullerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There has currently been one chapter released. This means that the contents of this review might not correlate with future additions to the plot, character, grammar, or general style of the story.
Let's start with the plot. Not too much to say on this front, since there hasn't been said too much about it. We know somebody wants somebody, and that there are kids on the line. We also get a few tips about it being more of a family business. Might develop into something more later on.
With characters, I would say that things are fine. Dynamic is good and you can see it all becoming something better. Will look forward to that one.
Grammar is great. Saw no errors. The grammar checker couldn't find one either. Splendid work on that front
Style is fairly straightforward. Follows the general rules of wording and sentence structure.
Overall? 5/5. I am sure it will become something much greater in the future. - D.M. Rhodes (Razzmatazz)Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Descent is a gritty, soft-fantasy, story about two siblings on the run, (so far). There are only two chapters right now and the update schedule is limited at the moment, but for understandable reasons. The writing is solid, there aren’t any noticeable mistakes and the character dynamic between the two protagonists is interesting. Not a fan of the font, but that’s a personal issue which can be solved with a single click. World-setting is still undefined, but seems to be holding up.
These are still early days of course, but it looks promising! =) - WeavervaleRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Something is going on.
Something is going on and we are only getting a glimpse of it. Are the heroes mutants that are about to be rounded up? Fugitives? Or did they just run afoul of some group. The men in black armour are chasing down our Arty and Eli.
Grammar: 5/5 This has been proofread ans its clean. I would say that it's good enough to publish, but I'll hold off on the one big problem until later.
Style:5/5 this is also crisp. The paragraphs don't run on too long and the dialogue is *in the right format*. Nuff said. My usual explanation about how to do style on rr is unnecessary here.
Character 5/5: i want to know more about these characters. Really this is the important thing. Z has written a compelling story that I wanr to keep reading.
Story:5/5- now wait you're saying, didn't he have a big problem?
There is only one problem with Descent. You know when people insult a short person because they are short? What they’re really saying is that there's not enough of them.
Are you getting my meaning? Because it's a good story with gooe writing. The only thing that will fix it is fixing the release schedule and since I know the author is busy with his work life, I am not going to ding him for that. - Chaos JesterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've been waitinf and waiting for at least five chapters, but couldn't help myself and four is enough.
Enough for what, you may ask.
Enough to immediately drag you into the story, give you to protagonists already caught in conflict with distinctive personalities, and an atmosphere that lets you know how the world is for these two.
It is well written, polished, and entertaining. Read this. Patience between chapters is important and I feel worth it for Descent. - CloudfallRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Cover: Simple but effective.
Synopsis: Well written. It really displayed what the book is all about in a descriptive way. I really like it.
Grammar: High quality. No error that could affect the flow of the story.
First Chapter: It's really good. Readers will want to turn the pages.
Story: The plotline follows Arty and Eli whose quiet lives were shattered afer returning to a burning home. This urban fantasy novel is a mixture of sci-fi, magic and progression. From what ive read, the story is developing really well.
Style: Third person narration. Well used.
Characters: So far, they're well written, especially the two main characters, Arty and Eli.
Overall: Great work. - Arthur InverseRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A diamond in the rough that just has unfortunate circumstances. The story has very vivid imagery that easily gets you painting a picture in your mind. And the back and forth between the twins is top notch. Hopefully the author is able to release more at some point because the story is a smooth enjoyable read so far and I'd like to see more!
- Bluelightning42Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5I feel like it's almost too early to give a review. But trying anyways.
I really like the style this author writes in. Zero complaints there I think it's a nice blend of descriptions and story that doesn't tip into sounding dry or being flowery and empty.
Grammatically it's the same. Theres nothing that actively hinders my enjoyment of this and while I could probably nit pick something if I actively searched it out...that's not really what I do when reading anything unless it pops out as weird.
I can't say much for the story with only 1 chapter out so far and a monthly release schedule. I can say I liked similar storylines years ago but it remains to be seen if this ends up being unique enough to be entertaining - and I like the powers I've seen so far they feel balanced and well thought out if not fully unique.
Characterwise I'm hooked. There hasn't been enough released for them to be fully fleshed out but I like what I've seen of both the main characters and the natural sounding banter they've displayed.
Going forwards I have no clue how far this will go but I've joined the ride here and am tentatively looking forwards to see how decent progresses! - Consistent MilkRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5First of all, the thing that stood out the most for me was how the writer was able to juggle my visual memory with his sentences and writing style. Pretty impressive. Based on the frequency of publishing new chapters and limited story development, I think that it is still too early to say much about it aside from the fact that it is has high potential to become a good story in the future.
A strong first chapter which is followed by a second chapter where we don't see much development storywise. Then the third chapter also doesn't do much on that front. Hopefully we will get some more interesting developments in the next chapters. Another issue I had beside the lack of content was the unusal gap between the paragraphs which made me move my eyes much more than necessary. - Sam TolanRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I admit, I wouldn't have likely started reading this prior the last few days if it weren't for several things lining up in it's favor. The author is someone I viewed as a friend, and has asked me if I have read their work (I try to read and critique/review all my friends work when I have the time) for starters. It was also in the May Promotion Thread on the forums, along with April 2022's Writathon review competition happening at this time. All of these created the perfect chance for me to try this story.
Personally, I feel it's still too early to give any kind of review, whether advanced or normal. However, I was able to scrape enough together to do an advanced review.
I enjoy the way the author writes. It is a wonderful blending of descriptions, dialogue, plot that manages to capture our attention. The details are neither too much or be too little but nearly perfectly balanced. As a reader and writer, I love this kind of style.
I didn't notice anything that took me out of the story or broke my immersion into the world and characters. That is such an rarity with any kind of media for me that I couldn't give it a lower score.
There hasn't exactly been that much out story wise, to me exactly, and it is more in the opening parts of the story. I do enjoy where it is going, and look forward to seeing more.
I adore the characters. They feel natural, which is hard for many authors and creators to do, and while they would be expanded upon over time, there has already been signs of growth.
My only nitpick is the chapters only come out every few months or so, but knowing the creator is trying their best makes me want to cheer them on rather than abandon the story.
In short, I enjoyed this story. I think it is worth a try for others as well. - SeericaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.52 chapters is a bit early to review because it's barely a start of their adventure, but that was surprisingly interesting. It moved the story with a good pace and let the characters show themselves and the world through their actions instead of relying only on exposition.
The 2nd chapter is an improvement in prose, although the last scene could use a bit more detail to show the environment.
As far as my hopes for future developments go, I think it found a decent way to show how bad the situation is without going into melodrama or bad developments happening just to tug at a reader's heart strings.
