- NuitBlancheRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0You can see by my choice of score I really do appreciate this story.
I always had a soft spot for sarcastic character and they are really swiftly developed on this novel and without even talking about the comedic tone, congrats to the author !
This is not Litrpg which is pretty nice for once and the power system is kind of unique (I think at least).
I don't remember spotting glaring gramatical mistakes or else but again I'm rating this at chapter 8 and I might simply have forgotten from former chap.
That's all for this novel, it's better when it's concise.
And on another note, please take time to rate a story, just reading the prologue is not enough to get a good feeling for every criteria a rating asks for, it's just an advice, a good and objective review is helpful for every author ! - TralliERoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0OK so I've been reading stuff here for a while now and after just twenty five chapters this one has made it into my top three, and those other two slots are only there because they're filled by stuff that's from other genres and settings entirely.
The style is engaging, never really letting you get bored with the subject and not overhyping each occurance. Rather than telling the reader how things work the author has the character do and think things that make perfect sense for them to do at the time, and throug those the reader gets a general sense of how these things might work. It blends well in the story, very hard to do correctly, and exposes things at a pace, rather than all at once. So far (as of ch. 25) there's been only one play by play eplanation, and that was for the benefit of the characters involved, not a thinly veiled ploy to get things over to the reader.
The grammar's fantastic, a great relief after the mountains of engrish and bad spelling mistakes that so often spoil a good scene.
The story is grim, dark, and hilarious, whilst also very entertaining. Using the ever popular lore bits technique and mentions in conversations we get a very real sense of the world and it feels very alive.
The characters are like silhouettes in the twilight, you get a very real sense of the being there, and you might catch a glimpse of their real selves in the dusk, but you never really get a "This is John, he collects paperclips..." introduction. Very much like this story as a whole infact, dark, mysterious, and frightiningly funny when they want to be.
Know that I did not mindlessly click the five star ratings, this is my honest opinion and I highly recomend you give this story a chance - FirstDragonRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Excellent bantery dialogue, solid description, and a quick sure pace all make this one fantasy journey worth reading.
There's plenty of humor but also a well-crafted setting lurking in the background only to intermittently pop up warts and all to impress the reader with its ugly yet intriguing history.
The characters are still developing and so far do not stink of two-dimensional flatness and simplicity. If Gob and the MC continue to show greater depth and more fleshed out interactions due to new / different circumstances then I'd comfortably move towards a character score of 5.
The story is also budding and with the revelations and pointed out mysteries of the last three chapters it seems the plot won't simply be about powerful downtrodden boy going to special magic academy. Which is a definite good thing for all involved. Characters, author, and readers.
Grammar suggests an educated native-like mastery. If there are mistakes, I could care less given the overall package...which is exactly the feel you want...not having grammar interrupt the flow or feel of your reading pleasure...and possibly enhancing it if nifty sentence structures, pauses, or combinations kick off...something.
For individual, critical asides, I've left a few comments as I read the chapters...but I am comfortable strongly recommending this story based on its current trajectory and its overall style/approach. Let us hope the author has a good bit of the future story framework planned out and that he remains committed to filling it in with fleshy demonic goodness. - SanchoMontoyaRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Funny start, good character voice, and boy is he is MOTIVATED! It's only a prologue, so far, so I didn't get much idea of an actual story, but it is worth giving it a shot, so I will watch for the next chapter (supposedly going to be 1 per week).
