- Marshall75Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0An enjoyable read. The MC is a pretty mentally damaged person, and her low self esteem haunts her new life as a demon. She doesn’t really interpret the world around her very accurately and it’s interesting to take the measure of her character and how she changes. Secondary characters are okay, especially her older sister and the antagonists are pretty well developed.
- LiarbytradeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The cover art's good too. With that being said, I can't decide if you missed an opportunity to go full meta by making Rosa's creative outlet painting instead of writing. I feel like there's a lot of value for both the audience and the author in being able to break the fourth wall like that. Still, that might have been too on the nose, and you can probably take advantage of a lot of the same emotions and techniques with a painting motif. All in all, it'll be interesting to see what aspects you use and what you don't once I'm a few more chapters in. Good job and keep it up!
- DragonzruleRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I was iffy about the premise of this story especially the reincarnation of the MC as a baby demon, but I've found myself drawn into it - to my surprise and delight - the world detailing, characterization and slice-of-life elements are definitely a highlight, while a few peaks of action keep up the suspense. The storytelling is smooth and I'm looking forward to more from this author. Definitely one to follow.
*DRAGON RRRRREEEAAADDDDSS* - Charlotte_AstoryRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This read has had me hooked since I decided to give it a chance, and I will most truthfully say, this has ruined every other book for me. I don't think I will be able to find a book I enjoy more.
The character, Rosa (or Morrigan), is simply what I feel a character should be like (I won't spoil her personality for those who are still reading the first book). As for the other characters, they each have their personal flaws, which are normally unpredictable.
As for the story, I will say, I started binge reading this, and now I check it regularly for updates and chapters. The story has all I think a book should have. It's warm, unpredictable, and so incredibly funny.
My only complaint here is that the chapters don't come out fast enough, and until the chapter is published, I can only think about what's going to happen next! And then, at the end of each chapter, the cliffhanger just sets me off into another cycle of endless wondering.
Overall, this is a great read, and I'm looking forward to when the book is finally finished. I'd definitely recommend it to those who are looking for a new book (if they don't mind the fact that it'll ruin every other book). - Victor DoUrdenRoyal Road★★★ 3.0The writing and prose isn't bad. Some good character development is also there. The surroundings and the environment can use more descriptions however. Story is very easy going, slice of lifeish. Entire story however is really undermined by the stupid absurdity, that the character is a baby. Kinda odd choice to have no mother character
- Gameknight2169Royal Road★★★ 3.0Style & Grammar: The style is decent. Although the writing feels awkward in some places, it's not really an issue. Grammar is also fine.
Story & Characters: The story is where I am quite torn. Initially, the story is good: a sort of found-family type story with reincarnation. But it devolves into meaningless slop. The plot progresses solely through "MC is stupid, MC does something stupid, MC is in danger, we call it plot." Despite being over 20 years old and repeating the process multiple times, she can't understand the simple idea that "people are going to kill you if you leave the safety of the castle." Hell, people try to kill her even within the castle, but after the first time, Alphegor (the father) ramps up security and there are no more attempts that even come close to successful within the castle. Seeing this, Rosa/Morrigan decides that she should repeatedly try to leave the castle, because why would she ever want to be safe? Throughout the story, every single person is flat and one-dimensional - nobody ever changes, nobody ever shows complexity. Every single character is exactly the same as they were when they were introduced. This author has been given a canvas and chooses to paint in monochrome. Additionally, the plot itself becomes childish in the end, with Morrigan/Rosa as a barely educated child finding the obvious solution called "diplomacy" where somehow ministers with centuries of life experience and education decide that war is always the best option. This is ridiculous, and we all know it. - SrookaRoyal Road★★★ 3.0I rage at most choices our MC - Morrigan does, she can't accept reality she is in and goes into escapism hard.
Despite being in the world for 3 years after timeskip, showed nothing but love from his farther, she still doesn't trust him with real self - liking to paint, and is prejudiced against him.
I would assume changing body and being in good environment treated your traumas, but clearly author Hass other idea. - GarnaxRoyal Road★★★ 2.5Loved the story up to chapter 23 where it veered off on a strange tangent that killed all my enjoyment of the story. I skimmed the comments for later chapters but it looks like that story decision kept on for quite a few chapters so I dropped it then.
Good grammar, interesting story but unfortunate choice of storyline which unfortunately removed my enjoyment of the story. - Ben OrnauRoyal Road★★ 2.0First of all, I think the overall quality of the story deserves a 4, not a 2, but I'll explain the downgrade.
It was growing on me :
To fully appreciate Demon Queen Wants to Paint I think it needs to be read with "anime-tinted glasses" and I don't mean that as a criticism. Especially for a story that, I think, is trying to be a wholesome slice-of-life kind of tale (anime are very good at that).
A good story doesn't need to be original in every aspect. Tropes are not a bad thing and making a new iteration of something we are culturally familiar with can be fun to read.
Once you perceive the story that way I think it doesn't bother much if some of the secondary characters are a bit one-dimensional or cartoonishly "evil" (like the mother).
The problem is when the glasses are breaking and you apply real-world values to the situation.
Suddenly the immature sorcerer demon who makes everyone roll their eyes in front of his antics appears as what he really is: a dangerously narcissistic guy with very little empathy, capable and willing to manipulate (and groom) a child in order to gain status.
The hard exterior father who only shows his gooey side to his beloved daughter is actually a rather violent man and ruler who treats everyone except his daughter with contempt and sometimes cruelty.
Once my glasses shattered I wasn't really able to put them back but I understand that some readers will not question the story the way I do and they are not wrong. Suspension of disbelief is different for each individual.
The moment that broke the illusion for me was a chapter where the Heroine asked her father if "being kind is a weakness". It made me roll my eyes. Not because the father gave a bad answer (it was actually pretty good) but because, at that moment in the story, the Heroine had been alive for more than 30 years !
"Is being nice a weakness ?" is a normal question for a child not for an adult, especially formulate in that maner.
I quit :
After this chapter, I kept reading but - TheDragonBeyondTheGateRoyal Road★★ 2.0It's pretty hard to be sympathetic towards the main character when she's less judgemental than delusional. She died by drowning in the first chapter, and years later still hasn't accepted that that happened - while her desire to find a way home makes an interesting change from all the protagonist these days who embrace their new world, she has never even engaged with the fact that she wasn't kidnapped, but reincarnated.
She's also often incuriously and easily riled, which leads her into unexpected trouble and a constant misunderstranding of those around her.
While a flawed protagonist can work, you need to care, and it's hard to care about her.
Alternative, the world could be a hook. However, twenty chapters deep and we barely see or understand the world. Once she learned she was in the underworld, she never seemed to make a real effort to learn or see it again. We don't really know anything about it.
Alternatively we could have had an extended cast of characters instead of a likable protagonist or interesting world, but that also didn't happen. While the early chapters suggested we might get this with the dwarf and elf, they gradually became less important, and we never really connected with them. Rosa's half-sister has failed to rise to that level, and every other adult character is mildly unpleasant at best.
The protagonist is unlikable and delusional, and it's hard to understand why we're following her. The greater world is still a complete mystery. In the end, the story meanders without a goal or purpose.
