Description

Far in the future, the last two viable cities in the western hemisphere – Technoburbia and New Baravia – struggle for control over a vast and largely desolate land.

Officially they are at war. In practice, the war has been a stalemate for a generation, the disputed frontier between the two city-states never moving.

In the city of New Baravia itself, a vast circular concrete wall keeps its inhabitants in, and its refugees out.For its citizens, life is monotonous and unequal, with enormous wealth in the hands of nobles, criminal gangs, and entertainment bosses.

It is the last of these that control the hit entertainment show, “Demon Hunters”. A chance, perhaps, for the ordinary man or woman to rise up, and change their fate...

This LitRPG novella is based around a futuristic battle-royale situation, partly set in VR, and partly in a post-apocalyptic city. The story features combat and action, some strong language, and lots of great characters that will stick with you!

Right away the author gives us a relatable MC, high-stakes tension, and terrific world-building. We get a female co-lead and fights against weird monsters. And all of it delivered in high-quality prose so we can immerse ourselves in the story without being jarred out.
It's a VR story but it's difficult to tell which world is more dangerous. Sure, there are demons in the virtual world -- but in the real world there are capitalists! Grinding inequality defines the dystopia the MC inhabits, and it even pours over into its virtual counterpart. This world-building really shines; top-notch, professional work here which sucks you in right away.
I'd recommend Demon Hunters to anyone who likes to read LitRPG. It checks all the boxes and is delivered with a high degree of skill.

Imagine "hunger games" as a LITRPG, a virtual reality LITRPG specifically. That's what this feels like at the start. Usually I have a lot of trouble caring about people dying in stories like this because, well, its just a video game, but because the character enters in the first place because he needs to pay a debt to a crime boss who will otherwise have him killed... well... the stakes are real, even if the game and the monsters are not. If you're looking for an action oriented story with a bit of XP, stat points, and equipment upgrades, you'll probably enjoy this story.
