Demon Heart

Description
It almost feels like Mira is cursed. Her life is going from bad to worse, and just when it feels like she’s bottomed out, she gets kidnapped by a demon named Jorath and taken to another world. She quickly learns that worse is a relative term, and that her life’s trajectory is on a steep decline.
Now all she wants is to find a way back to Earth, to her normal boring life in a too-small apartment with a crappy retail job. Jorath has other ideas. He’s tired of being a slave, and he thinks Mira might just be the key to his freedom. He’ll return her home for a price. All she has to do is somehow survive long enough to confront the King of Demons and carve out his heart.

- IllharkRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm going to preface this review by saying I flat out don't like most isekai stories. The genre itself doesn't interest me. However, Demon Heart quickly captures your interest with great writing, a great "portal" transition, and a captivating plot, so much so that I couldn't put it down regardless of my reservations about the genre.
I'm only four chapters in, but I felt compelled to write a review because this story shows enormous promise, and it's one of the first I've read on Royal Road where I actively look forward to every new chapter.
The characters are believable and interesting, and both the grammar and writing style are great. As mentioned above, the story grips you quickly and keeps you wanting more. Big recommendation from me. - denkkarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Mira is one unlucky MC. Transported to another world by a demon at the behest of a demon king with less than great intentions, she's left to her own devices, presumably to grow more attractive to said king. But she's between a rock and hard place because this new world is downright hostile and the humans think she's associated with the demons. I'm rooting for her, but this looks like a no-win scenario.
It's still early in the novel, but this isn't a MC all alone, no dialog scenario. So far there's plenty of characters around to talk with, albeit few with good intentions. - RestitutorOrbisRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall: 4.5/5
This story is definitely worth a read. It shows a lot of promise and gives me the expectation that it will only improve as the author continues to write.
Style: 4.0/5
The author generally does a great job of showing more than telling. This is a difficult balance to walk, but the author does a solid job of telling the story with language that is interesting enough to keep you reading.
Characters: 4.5/5
The characters are one of the strongest aspects of Demon Heart. Mira is a relatable protagonist stuck in a rut where bad things keep happening to her. Despite these unfortunate occurrences, she seems to find strength in her continued trials and tribulations, and shows growth throughout the chapters. The side characters are also interesting.
Story: 4.5/5
The story is engrossing through the first 10 chapters. The world building is good enough to provide an interesting setting, there are no overly predictable plot devices contained within.
Grammar: 5.0/5.0
No major mistakes in grammar or spelling. There are a few unnecessary commas here and there but these are common mistakes. These are free stories without professional proofreaders/editors, some mistakes are to be expected. - darksevenRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is an interesting well written story that includes the MC being teleported to another world and having a unique power.
Pros:
Well written!
Constantly keeps you guessing
Cons:
Because the MC is constantly whisked from one place to another she has little agency outside of short specific periods where she's temporarily on her own - B. A. Baker (Thedude3445)Royal Road★★★★ 4.0I read a lot of this story for my latest weekly review—the first twelve chapters, constituting most of the introductory chapters to the story. And I have to say... This is a dark isekai adventure that is themed with a demon world.
And... that’s about it. Not a huge amount of content has happened thus far in the story, and not much of it gripped me in a way that kept me yearning to read forward.
I’m never one to say that I am a huge fan of isekai stories in general, so a lot of this comes down to my opinion, but I do feel like the intro to this story, while engaging enough that it’s at least decent, isn’t the kind of showstopper that I was hoping for.
In fact, the first chapter, at least after the contextless opening scene that was kind of wonky, is pretty great stuff, and actually really got me excited for the rest of the story to come. The protagonist Mira is given a very well-done introduction where her character is fleshed out well and we get a vivid portrait of a sad and lonely young woman who’s stuck in a dark place... and then taken into a very different world all of a sudden. It’s an incredibly dark first chapter but one that surprised me.
However, the rest of the story after that, as well-made as it was, didn’t move me in any particular way. Maybe it has something to do with the protagonist becoming a little bit more “normal” for this kind of story? Once she’s in the new world, she becomes pretty sassy and abrasive and doesn’t take shit from the people around her... and in that way, becomes a lot like most heroines of stories on this site. I guess her character in the first chapter hadn’t been given a proper enough introduction, but it still disappointed me.
The story is filled with mysteries and mistrust and confusion, but it doesn’t feel like much has happened as of Chapter 12 because most of it consists of Mira stumbling through this dark human/demon world and trying to figure out what is going on here, but the readers already know significant amounts of
