Description

Emerra Cole died just short of her twentieth birthday—but that won’t stop Jack Noctis, the embodiment of death, from asking for her help.

Not that Jacky raised her from the dead. He says she came back on her own. He only dug her up, pulled her from her casket, and gave her a place to stay. While he hates to impose, he hopes she’ll lend him a hand with a murder that’s been giving him trouble.

The anthropology professor, Trevon Wayde, was shot in the chest. The police are looking for his murderer, but Jacky wants to know why his soul is missing.

Emerra returned from death with the Eyes of the Sphinx, a legendary ability that allows her to see things others can’t. Jacky thinks her new powers could be useful when it comes to uncovering what happened.

When Emerra agrees to look around, she’s dragged into a world of magic and monsters. There isn’t much time for her to adjust. She’ll have to get her bearings while working side by side with a vampire, making friends with a wolfman and a bog-creature, and learning how to deal with an abrasive teenage witch. Thank god the mummy is there to help.

Life after death is going to be interesting.

So, just to inform, I binged the entire first book in one day, it was that good.
Though i must admit the introduction of so many quirky characters in the first chapters made me wary, all the characters had depth, and the mystery kept me glued to my seat,
Only a couple of spelling mistakes, though i am unsure whether they actually were mistakes or just uses that i wasn't aware of.
This is one of these gems on this site, that reads like, but is better than many of the published works i love.

I just discovered this today, and i am quiet excited to see that there a 6 volumes plus a volume of short stories, oh well there goes my free time for the foreseeable future.
If  that doesn´t tell you how i feel about the story, let me spell it out:
    I like it, a lot.
I have found a lot of gems here over the last couple of years, and considering how much i read the more serialized nature of most titles on here is a blessing.
Bit every now and then an author with clearly delineated Volumes of a story is a welcome change of pace.
I´m only at the beginning of Volume one, but the characters are fun, the writing style is engaging, and the story inrtiguing. As is said before, is suspect a few long, or in terms of sleep, short, nights ahead. Always something to look forward to.

This was such an enjoyable read: the plot is tight and well constructed, the characters are loveable, and the mystery leaves just enough hints to whisper at the solution.
Highly recommended for those who like detective and fantasy stories! This is a rare and wonderful gem of a read and I urge you not to hesitate to give it a shot!

Sometimes I read so much webfiction that I forget the difference between it and the edited, published novels I can find at my local library. This reminded me how much of a difference it is reading something from an experienced writer that has obviously been polished more than simply rereading a first draft. Dead eyes open is a labor of love that has been brought up to high standards, and it shows!
The style is exactly what it needs to be. It's not too simple, the vocabulary and phrasing used here is clear yet not basic like what you'd get in a children's book. It's also not the most complex but a more flowery style is not what a story like this needs. It wouldn't fit the tone or the first person point of view.
The grammar is impeccable. Nothing else to be said.
The story keeps you interested throughout the chapters with interesting lore about the world, well written dialogue, a mystery that keeps getting more complex, and nice slice of life pauses that help release some of the buildup of tension. The tone is somewhere between a thriller and a more whimsy fantastical adventure, and it balances the lightness and darkness of the story very well so that you feel the stakes are serious, but often end up with a smile on your face.
The characters are wonderful. The main character is very well built, layers upon layers of depth taken from a background that makes itself felt through her thoughts and actions. I couldn't help but get attached to her and the way she unapologetically speaks her mind in situations where sometimes she really should shut up hahaha. The cast of supernatural characters around her have also been clearly thought through and written in a way that leaves none of them  one dimensional. I can't wait to know more about them!
I cannot recommend this book enough!

Initially it was a bit weird for me but as I got to know the characters more for themselves rather than their external/supernatural selves I really liked them and the community household.
I kept reading to see how Emerra integrated and am intrigued to read more in the series, hoping she realises that she is accepted and valued.
The detective story was gripping and exciting.
Really enjoyed it - highly recommend.

    A printworthy mystery novel
I really liked the story. Especially the dialogue was excellent. Our protagonist and the cast in general just feel very real. And it made me laugh quite often.
I’m looking forward to reading the other already finished parts and learning more about the world and characters. :)
    Definitely deserves more recognition.

A story with a plot, fleshed-out characters and NO blue boxes. The author clearly likes mystery / detective narratives.
This is a good mystery story and a potential start to an interesting world. There are still plenty of unresolved mysteries about characters, including the protagonist, to fuel the sequels.
Read if you like clever puns! Also, if you like teenage anxiety portreted in a credible manner.

So fun! I came here from The Unexpected Engagement of the Marvelous Mr. Penn and I think at this point I can confidently say that I’m quite enamored with Goff’s capacity to create sincere, lovable characters and exciting plot while simultaneously nailing the pacing. Seriously, the only reason I’m not in major book-withdrawal right now is because I already know there’s a sequel ready and waiting.
    Thank you, rkgoff!

This story was everything I was hoping for, and more.
The author's distinctive, sorta energetic style of writing makes it so smooth and easy to read, and Emmera's thoughts and observations let the reader seamlessly into the world of the novel.
The cast is colorful, fun, and overall mostly wholesome(murderers and witches aside :p), and they all feel unique. Some of the pov shifts were a treat to read, and livened up the story really well.
I'm not great at guessing mysteries, but the clues seemed well-placed to me as well.
Overall, can only recommend it if you want a fun, well thought-out urban-fantasy mystery novel.
