- Turtle WarsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall this is a standard RR fare. Best thing to say is that unlike authors who try to milk out Patreons and stretch the story infinitely, the author here has dumped the entire story in a week. I am eternally thankful to the author for that.
The story has been kept interesting, mostly it is quite well paced, only at one arc i felt it had too much excitement. Unlike what another reviewer said, putting slice of life in between helped me take some breath in between the action. I liked that thing about the story. Different people have different tastes.
As any story of this nature, the hero is OP, but then I like OP fellows. Also like other stories of this sort, the other characters often ooh and aah at the hero. I never felt it too cringey to drop. I can say that I enjoyed this story.
Now the negative. Before reading the author's short bio at the end of the story, I felt it was written by an American white guy, probably below 25 (I am guilty of racial profiling here). Black is bad, white is nice, chinese girls are beautiful, chinese guys are out there to cheat you, places with Arabic guys have slavery and slums..yadda yadda..If you mind these "mild" indirect racism then this story is not for you. However I am not here to prescribe how others should view the world, as a reader you have the freedom to read or not. - Goat ManRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Disclaimer This review will have spoilers.
In the beginning, I enjoyed this novel, the MC was smart and slowly adapting to the world he was in taking advantage of his captives to thrive. However, once he escaped the novel became similar to a mid-tier slice of life novel where the MC just lives normally with nothing but a few faint goals for the future. The MC's intelligence becomes something that is only used to shock the king and his advisors with the revolutionary ideas many of which wouldn't have been all too revolutionary in medieval society (Banks, cheese and crossbows already existing) this leaves the impression that this was all left 'uninvented' just to give the MC his genius scenes.
The main character frustratingly doesn't directly work towards his original goal of destroying the sect (which also happens to be his biggest threat) by refusing to train to fight. While I'm glad that the MC isn't the classic murder hobo it's frustrating that he doesn't train a weapon initially despite it being necessary for his goal. This is compounded when even after a failed assassination attempt he doesn't consider learning a weapon. Of course, this is remedied by the fact he's given a knife that can cut through swords which, in my opinion, is an instance of something being pulled out of nowhere to justify the mc's illogical decision.
Furthermore, the nobles all act fine with the fact that some random commoner has a large amount of influence over the royal family. Though most nobles are pointless office workers who have little power and little potential to gain meaningful power as the prime minister is less powerful than the head of one of the three main families even in the capital which is where the PMs influence would be strongest, which makes me wonder why they even have the position if it's so powerless.
Finally, the storyline slows to a halt around 10 chapters after he escapes the sect. This makes the story feel incredibly slow, combined with the issues with the
