- The Monotone PuppetRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I think that this story got unfairly stuck with a low rating. The psychological aspect of it is great and the premise of hate-based powers is uniquely enjoyable. I also like that while the protagonist is manipulated, later on he understands that he was and is manipulated. And the fact that he has no choice but to allow himself to be manipulated in order to use his power is so intriguing.
I do think that the story could use more description. Like, what type of fire? What does the environment look like? What does the environment look like? There are also a few grammar mistakes that need to be fixed.
I look forward to the progression of his personality and growth, and I think the narration fits the story. - AnxiousReaderRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Let's just get into it, yeah?
Style: No complaints, nothing much to say.
Story: Intresting and unique, the author really captures the sort of doomed nature of being a Darkfire well.
I especially enjoyed the explanations of how the activation of their powers is what creates the monsters, requiring them to use their powers more.
Grammer: No complaints, nothing I could really spot, yay :D
Character: This is admittedly the weakest link in the story.
It's not that the characters don't have personalities, really they do. It's just that you see the surface of it and then realize there's not much underneath, shallow.
For example... the parents. We know they love Hayden. Actually, that's all we know about them.
It's as if their only purpose is to love Hayden, and then die for the character development.
Of course, this could be explained by the fact that the character is about... 13 or so?
The story has already said that Hayden had a simplistic view of the world back then, wouldn't be too much of a stretch for that it include people and relationships, considering he's also a bit of a loner.
Either way, it's the only real jarring complaint I have.
Thoughts:
I enjoyed the story, and I think anyone who likes a tragic hero will too.
