Description

Earth has had the misfortune to find itself in the crosshairs of an invasion by aliens from another dimension. Creatures known as Starbane rip passages through space to arrive here and fulfil their unknowable objectives. Frequently, this involves an indiscriminate extermination of a given area, and humans are not excluded from these attacks.

But every cloud has a silver lining, and another trans-dimensional visitor calling itself The Familiar has come to help. It can form contracts with individuals, and through them, uplift humanity as a whole to stand against the Starbane threat. Because of The Familiar’s help, humanity has prospered despite the relentless attacks of the enemy.

Donna is just another student headed to a camping trip organised by her school for the holidays. There, she will deal with the typical woes of a girl on such a trip. These woes include getting grouped with people she has never talked to before, mysteriously losing her diary, coming second place to her more attractive groupmates, and finding herself far from help when the Starbane casts a veil over Camp Elysium Lux.

This fiction is clearly, yet another take on magical girl genre popularised by "Stray cat Strut", and Magical Girl Gunslinger, so you can expect somewhat comedic "Ai" companion, a point buy system for new spells, and a host of monsters to massacre.
What makes this story stand out from mentioned predecessors is twofold. The main character is interesting to read about, her emotional intelligence is high, and this manifests as in fine interactions with secondary characters. I didn't get a feeling of shallowness like with Kat, from Stray Cat, and forced pity like in Gunslinger.
The other smaller thing is developed magic system, it has feeling of depth even though currently just it's veneer was scratched.
And that's my review it's fine addition to exciting genre, too bad it likely won't get updates but well it is worth reading anyway.

This is a good magical girl story. Give it a shot if you like stories about magical girls killing weird alien monsters.
Edit 4/25/23: This story continues to kick ass. You should really, really give it a try if you even vaguely like stories about teenagers with magical powers.
To get a little more in depth, this is a story about a new magical girl. It's fun. It is clearly inspired by the  popular magical girl stories on RR (Stray Cat Strut and Magical Girl Gunslinger), though it doesn't focus on guns like those stories.
The plot setup is basically the same as the other two stories: there are bad interdimensional aliens that want to eat humans, and good interdimentional aliens who give humans magic powers to defend themselves. The main character is on a field trip when the bad aliens invade the area, some rando is caught out in the open, the main character goes to rescue them, gets injured, and has to make a contract to survive. A difference from SCS and MGG is the MC uses mana both to buy access to grimoires and to cast spells, and needs to keep killing the monsters to earn enough mana to kill more monsters.
This is a good take on the premise so far. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

We're still in the beggining of this story, with the protagonist learning the rules as they go and we learn with them. The worldbuilding is nice, the action scenes well written and the plot compelling, so far. In the growing genre of magical girls stories, this one is certainly deserving of a follow. I will keep reading it!
