- S.N. KeirsteadRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0You get what you expect when reading "Crating a Golem." The world is set to be in a dire place in the prologue chapter. It does a great job of establishing tone and reasoning. The next few chapters contain the actual crafting. The process is elaborate and in-depth and filled with great descriptions. The opening to the story has a strong "Frankenstein" feel to it in the way the Golem is created. Fun read for those that are into crafting and creation focused literature.
- Chaos JesterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Pakko does a really great job setting up the story in the prologue. Sometimes hooks can get gimmicky, but it plays really well and sets a great tone moving forward. The fabrication and crafting of the golem is detailed, but I've honestly never been so immersed in reading about something being built. As another commenter said, the tone seems dry, but I honestly feel like it matches the ambience of the world that has been set up.
Style wise, the format is excellent. It paces dry, but effective, showing not telling the audience about the world at large. I love the breaking of paragraphs to give each step and each point its own quick moment instead of blurring it all together.
Grammar wise, Pakko is revising this as things pop up and its well polished by the time I got here. I didn't see any huge mistakes. Or really even small ones, for that matter.
The story is dark and immersive without hitting you over the head with it. You get a good sense of everything in just a few chapters as the journey begins. So far, so good. Should be interesting to see where it goes from here.
The characters are great, with their own voice and tone. My only gripe would be the amount of characters taking away from more insight to others. Once it gets scaled back, there will surely be loveable and hateable characters that will be a joy to read about.
Overall, Crafting a Golem is a gem to come out thanks to writeathon, and I'm happy to be able to read it. Keep it up, Pakko. - DovaBearRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story of Crafting a Golem would best be described as the story of what happens to the golem after it is crafted. The first few chapters introduce the most important characters as the golem is crafted and does well to describe the process. It is done well initially and doesn't take too long to jump into the action. From there the story changes to a series of training parts as the golem is prepped to kill a dragon for story reasons interspersed with other things. Overall I would say it accomplishes its goal pretty well. Some of the characters are interesting and developed while others are not as well defined. The main character Arthur doesn't always have clear motivations though part of that could be attributed to him being a baby and nieve I guess. The writing and editing are good overall and there are no major mistakes that take away from the story. The first fifty chapters have been solid and interesting and worth continuing to read. In the future, I would like to see the characters fleshed out more and an expansion on the antagonists. So far they haven't had much presence and have basically been background characters.
- BullerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0But more Pirate Mage than expected which was pretty good. Not everyday you get to see that mix and actually have it work. While there were some worries about how the start turned out, it kinda came into its own after that point. Character? I barely know them! But that didn't matter too much since they were fun too read. Is it worth calling it comedy? Not really. Is it fun nonetheless? Yes.
Grammar wasn't the worst and neither was my reading experience. 5/5 - RARE_METALRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story is very enjoyable, the characters are nice and while there are 1-2 gramatical errors per chapter they are not major .
It has great worldbuilding without felling infodumpy or unnatural, i reallly enjoyed the first chapter showing how the golem was built, details like that are often shortened or nonexistent in most frictions.
TlDR: Great start, solid after, very good characterisation - NatarajaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5It feels like an epic story! It only needs a little more focus on the emotions of the characters to get us attached to them and it will be perfect. The title makes us expect the adventures of a golem and maybe this aspect could take more importance.
- Style & Grammar
This is well written, no grammar, syntax nor style issues. The layout is good which makes the text pleasant to read. However, English is not my native language, so I may have missed some things...
- Story
Lots of different POVs, lots of interesting information about the world, intrigue and tension. The beginning with the undead is very good and makes us want more, the parts with the crafters and on the ocean are very good too. We feel that the world building is very well done and that there will always be new and exciting things to discover.
- Character
The changes of POV in each chapter and the focus on the World Building make that the characters, and especially their emotions and purposes, are less developed which is a pity. As the readers did not develop an attachment to the characters, this gives less stake to the conflicts. A better balance should be found between the two. This is the great weakness of this fiction: the thoughts and emotions of the characters. - MadAdam73Royal Road★★★★ 4.0The prologue was a pretty good hook that demonstrated the threat the Necromancers posed to civil society. The next 6-7 chapters focused a lot on the actual building of the Golem, the star of the show. So clearly more of slow paced novel here. The world building is solid and a foundation is set for cool things to happen.
Character Score- The Characters we meet are all in different parts of the world doing something, I assume in every case, to do with building this Golem which will, hopefully, defeat the necromancers. We see what these characters do, but I had a hard time knowing what they were feeling or thinking. They didn't feel important to me, I personally didn't feel like I had a reason to care about them.
All the focus and build up is going to this Golem. Then we finally meet him and I like him! If you enjoy watching characters discover the world around them then the Golem hits that spot. It's literal interpretations and minor social faux pas are the first bit of humor I've seen so far. I just wish he was in the story sooner.
Style- This read like a very serious story, lot's of solid world building, and no info dumps, good stuff. It is lacking a bit of charm for me, but occasionaly the glimmer of magic you get see let's you know there is wonder to be had.
Grammar Score- impeccable grammar for the most part, though I was sorely missing the paragraphs having indentations. That may just be a personal pet peeve of mine though.
Story Score- I've really read just a lot of build up so far, there are necromancers, and Golem is going to fight them. Hopefully. That's all that really stuck with me. The Golem has a journey of self discovery before him, but I'm not really seeing any similarly compelling story elements to any of the other characters. Well, besides the cool guy from the prologue.
