Description
Have you ever found a rock? Not just any rock, a talking rock. One that insults you, offers useless advice, and never quite understands what’s going on? No? Neither had Jan. It has been sixteen years since the attack on medieval Kag let a city burn, and short of having to rebuild, not much has changed. Detective work simply never came naturally to him. Jan can’t remember a time when he wasn’t Consul to the Archmage. His extraordinary talent landed him a life of luxury, raised by one of the most powerful mages ever to grace their simple world. Jan lazes through work as both an academic and a scribe. Yet when mischief lands him in a hangman’s cell, he finds a name carved into the stone wall and a link to the truth behind their lives. Teaming up with his friend Laura, the two launch an investigation into their weaving world, only to dabble in a little more mystery than they originally devised.... Jan and Laura awaken a power they never knew they had, extraordinary abilities that tear the fabric of the stars. Forty years into interstellar war, TACTI unit "Sill" can proudly claim nothing; life as a forgotten tool for CORE troops was about as mundane as it gets. That was until it received the honour of serving the greatest Commander to ever live. During the siege of Quail homeworlds, Sill's Autobot systems once directed the fleets of a thousand worlds. Today, long-distance messages to orbit have a return time of 146 years; an army brews on the western continent and monsters roar over the resurgence of a pseudo-Renaissance society. There was, however, only one slight problem. Well, a lot of problems....... It's hard to fight monsters when your Commander's been brainwashed by local fauna.

- Aisoo_StarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's time to release my honest review, it isn't good to read a story without landing your thoughts, it would help the author improve and readers know what they are going to read.
I recommend reading this.
Style:
The writing is so vivid (thanks for that). The descriptions are lush, like, "Rain poured from the inky dark" okay, Shakespeare, save some atmosphere for the rest of us. The pacing is tighter than Crous’s grip on that coin, though the switch from "epic assassination mission" to "janitorial scribe shenanigans" gave me whiplash. Still, I’m not complaining. Variety is the spice of life, and this story is spicy.
Story:
So, we’ve got:
1. Professional Murder Buddies™ (Crous and Jana, who clearly skipped Teamwork 101).
2. A Heist Gone Wrong (because when does it ever go right?).
3. A Literal Talking Rock (because why not?).
4. Betrayal!💀 Magic!💀 Possible Robots?!💀
It’s like Assassin’s Creed had a baby with Discworld and then that baby got into some Black Mirror. The plot twists are fun, though I’m still side-eyeing Jana... Also, the fact that electricity is taboo in this world? Hilarious. Imagine getting burned at the stake for inventing a toaster.
Grammar:
Mostly solid, but there were a few moments where I went, "Huh?" Like, "Strikes, they really were blind", was that a typo or just Crous being dramatic? (Honestly, both are valid.) Some dialogue tags got lost in the sauce, making me wonder who said what. But hey, nobody’s perfect, not even assassins with built-in Wi-Fi.
Characters:
- Crous – The emotionally stunted murder machine with a literal metal heart. Love him. 10/10, would not want to meet in a dark alley.
- Jana – The "I’m definitely not shady" partner who then immediately betrays everyone. Just classic.
- Jan – The chaotic scribe we all deserve. This kid is out here committing crimes, talking to rocks, and failing exams like it’s his job. Relatable 😅.
- Tacti (The Rock himself) – MVP. Funniest character in the story. "My pet rock is traumatized" had me whe - CR0WSULLRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0To begin with: this is a great concept.I have not had the pleasure of reading a lot of stories involving magic vs. technology, and the author here does a wonderful job of plunging his readers into a ripe world that does well to representbothof these things. The city that we are introduced to is well thought out, and the author has a truly visionary eye that lets us really feel like we are walking throughout the city streets--and this extends into further chapters outside of the city as well.- Great worldbuilding- Vivid imagery- Compelling characters- A vast well of concepts that will keep you readingJan, the main character, is what kept me wanting to read. He is a whimsical young man in many ways, but well aware of the power that he holds. While he isn't above doing what he wants, you (the reader) get the sense that he treats his gifts with an intrinsic level of responsibility. He uses them as needed, but not in an excessive manner, which, for me, make this an extremely likeable protagonist. He meets a wonderful companion, Sill, who I won't spoil too much about, but know that Sill is great addition to the story, and does well to compliment the protagonist, Jan.As feedback is meant to be honest, however, I will say this: there are issues with the grammar. Sometimes, commas are missing, as are periods and exclamation marks. None of these issues subtract from the story, nor the characters or the fiction itself, but addressing these issues would simply tighten up the syntax and assist with the flow of things. At times, some of the combat scenes can also feel a bit drawn out, slowing down the pacing through use of descriptive imagery, which can at times conflict with the snappy and riveting nature of what is happeningwithinsaid combat scenes. This story has many things. As previously mentioned, it has the worldbuilding. It has humor, wit, heart-racing combat scenes, and treats both its central characters and side characters with virve. Readers can expect to get lost in all
- GWLanderRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Lets start with what reels you in.
The world is written in a way that immerses you in it. Its not the story then the world. Its the world, you living in it. Then the story of Jan and sill as they try to find Crouse.
The overall story is amazing, you have different elements of fantasy, science, politics, ranks, personalities, talking rocks, a rock that walks after you kick it. The world is rich with diverse life that doesn't get you bored out from knowing more and more of it.
The style here is 3rd person, and the writer goes into great lengths to make sure every shot is vivid in your mind. The blend of story progression with world building is on point, although some points may feel slow sometimes, you are rewarded with action and vivid fights and clashes that makes you edge on your seat.
I personally sat on the edge of my seat at least 4 times when the fights got so intense.
Story-wise the story is unique, a kid named Jan with extraordinary powers but he's clumsy, finds a talking rock that can guide him to his parent's supposed killer. The writer shows you times and times again that even though Jan can be extraordinary, he is still human, and a child no less and you feel that in his character. And its great. Other characters like sill, the talking rock, Irwain, the caretaker of Jan, and others have a distinct feel to them. Everyone has a thing that makes you go "hmm, I wonder who they actually are, I wanna know more about them."
Grammar overall is good, Can't say much to that. All in all beautiful. The use of different vocabulary probably enhanced my English up a notch haha.
TLDR: if you are into stories that are deep into world building and amazing characters and a beautiful story. This one is for you!
Trust me, you will enjoy it. - Haviel2102Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This sprawling narrative begins not with a whimper, but with a storm of betrayal and supernatural combat. We are first introduced to Crous, a cybernetic assassin whose bloody rampage through the city of Kag becomes the stuff of legend. The story then masterfully pivots sixteen years into the future, focusing on the consequences of that single night through the eyes of Jan, a gifted but reckless young scribe orphaned by the attack. This dual timeline creates a fascinating mystery, grounding epic events in a very personal, character-driven reality. The heart of the story truly beats when Jan discovers Sill, a damaged, talking AI left behind by Crous. Their dynamic is the narrative's soul; Jan, seeking revenge, and Sill, a comically loyal AI who thinks its new master has been brainwashed. Their quest to unlock Sill’s fragmented memories by finding a hidden password propels the plot forward with a perfect blend of humor, intrigue, and heartfelt partnership. Jan’s journey from a troubled orphan to an active investigator is compelling and easy to root for.Just as the reader settles into this personal quest, the world violently expands. The introduction of a mysterious, technologically superior military faction and a terrifying parasitic plague elevates the stakes from personal revenge to a brewing war. The narrative skillfully weaves together elements of high fantasy, political conspiracy, and sci-fi horror, promising a conflict far larger than Jan initially imagines. With its rich world-building, complex characters, and layers of secrets, this saga is a captivating and ambitious beginning that leaves you desperate to uncover the truth.
- Idiot MuffinRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Three chapters in, and I’ve already been ambushed by assassins, mugged by emotion, chased across rooftops, and betrayed by a magic pie.
This story grabs you, not with exposition dumps or shallow action, but with a chaotic blend of humor, heart, and high-stakes mystery that feels both effortless and deliberate. It kicks off with a cybernetic assassin slicing through a medieval capital like it’s a warzone, only to slam the brakes and launch us sixteen years into the future… where we meet Jan.
Oh, Jan. You beautiful, chaotic little disaster.
Jan is exactly the kind of protagonist you root for: not because he’s heroic, but because he’s real. He’s smart, sarcastic, constantly in over his head, and somehow still trying to do the right thing while using magic to steal food and argue with guards. His accidental discovery of a semi-delirious AI in a rock (yes, a rock) is where the narrative really takes off. Their dynamic? Think “magical coming-of-age story meets broken space tech support.” It’s weird, it’s hilarious, and it works.
What impresses me most is how naturally the story blends genres. Magic and sci-fi aren’t just awkward neighbors here, they’re roommates who finish each other’s sentences. And yet, even with all the supernatural chaos, the emotional weight of Jan’s past, and his connection to Crous, sits quietly beneath every scene.
The prose is vivid, occasionally indulgent, but never without charm. You might trip over a few commas or overly elaborate descriptions, but honestly? You won’t care. The characters talk like people. The world breathes. And the rock? The rock talks back.
Verdict (so far):
Come for the assassin, stay for the sentient stone and the surprisingly emotional jail cell scene. “Consul to the Archmage” isn’t just a genre blend, it’s a genre alchemy. I can’t wait to see where it goes next. - KazekoshRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Really enjoying the story so far, slowly hooks you in and before you know it you can't wait to read the next chapter!
My favourite part was the world building, loved the combination of Scifi and Fantasy. Usually, I find it a little jarring when Scifi is mixed into a fantastical world but the author did a great job integrating it without just throwing random scifi into a medieval world. Jan seems like a fun character to explore the world through, and his unique background makes for exciting interactions.
The character interactions were also well made and felt genuine. It's the type of story you still think about even after putting it down, wondering about what's going to happen next. Especially the Setra debate scene which is definitely a treat! The fight scenes were well described and visualization was made easy. The confusion of the characters regarding what a metal man is and how they'd rust in rain was also a unique take on how different progression a society with magic would react to being introduced to a more technological based creation.
I would give it at least 5 chapters and before you know it you're up till 1am trying to just read one more haha - Nemo BlancRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Reading this piece felt like falling headfirst into some smoky midnight alley where assassins duel archmages and death is always one mistake away. As someone who spends too many nights buried in fantasy sagas, I was hooked from the first scene, a rainy, shadow‑cloaked infiltration and refused to put it down until the final line.Plot:The story doesn’t waste time with exposition, it just drops you into the action, making you piece together character motivations as you go. At its core, this is a brutal, relentless hunt, an assassin named Crous waging a desperate one‑man war against the Archmage Irwain and an army that feels as sharp and brutal as its weapons. The tension and sheer grit are palpable, making every swing, every lightning bolt matter.Grammar and Style:The prose shines when it leans into the grit, long, winding sentences that match the breathless pacing of the chase. The voice is vivid and visceral, capturing moments of terror and moments of quiet heartbreak (the twist with Jana is a knife to the gut). Occasionally, the style can be too dense, long paragraphs that overwhelm, making certain beats harder to track, but this also gives the piece a unique, immersive flow. The spelling and grammar are solid throughout, making the piece feel polished despite its sprawling nature.Final Thoughts:This is a brutal, thrilling read, rich with betrayal and bloody beauty. The mix of archmage‑level magic, brutal steel‑on‑steel action, and a hint of sci‑fi strangeness creates a world that feels alive, brutal, and worth exploring further. At times, it teeters on sensory overload, but that only adds to its appeal, a reminder that this is a story that doesn’t apologize for being bold. A must‑read for any dark fantasy fan looking for a fresh sting of adrenaline.
- Tide_08Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is really something else.Chapter 7 pulled me even deeper into Kag’s world, and honestly? It feels like the kind of place that lingers in your head—not because it’s beautiful (though some parts are), but because it’s alive. Creepy changelings, haunted noble estates, magic rocks that sass their way into your heart... there's just a lot to love.Jan’s such a complex character. He feels lost, but not in a vague, tragic way—more like someone constantly walking the line between being useful and being forgotten. The moments where he tries to stay calm, where he doesn’t fight back, hurt more than any punch. And then there’s Laura, who feels like a quiet anchor. And Sill... okay, I didn’t expect to care about a talking rock, but here we are.The Setra debate scene was so cool. Magic + academic drama + conspiracy vibes = yes please. You really feel the tension when Jan starts losing control, and that moment where even the professor gets weirded out? Chills.Aloat made me so mad. She’s not just mean—she represents that smug, privileged cruelty that hits too close to real life. Her attacks feel personal, and watching Jan hold it in… you just want him to snap back. But he doesn’t. And that restraint says so much. The final rain scene was probably my favorite. That quiet support, the not-talking-about-it, the "I got this for you" moment... it felt real. This story doesn’t scream for your attention—it just pulls you in slowly, layer by layer, until you’re stuck thinking about it long after.Really glad I read this.— ink.tideweaver 🌿
- bixiiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0First off, Consul of the Archmage blends Sci-fi and fantasy together, but the twist? It feels normal, not like the author didn’t know where to go and just slapped a handful of Sci-fi into a medieval world.
Fights are intriguingly described, as you can put yourself in the scene and imagine how the characters are acting, as you read! Feels like an cinematic anime scene lol.
The characters are dynamic, Crous the ✨assassin✨, and Jan, the consul to the archmage. Along with other characters. The guards don’t feel like side-characters, or things to just increase the world. ( this is a really good thing. )
I very much enjoy how these characters interact, the personalities feel distinct, like they are actually talking instead of…dialouge to check the box.
Like look, Kag? I get a feeling that it isn’t very well-maintained from the descriptions, but what can you expect from a medieval world? The sanitary-ness is unbelievably bad. But the world building and how the author describes things is chefs-kiss.
Other than that, I do need to say this though.
Author, PLEASE make sure you check for any punctuation issues, grammar issues, and overall anything like that. It’s not something that will veer the reader off course and kill them, but it can get confusing sometimes, as for me, when I read a dialogue of someone saying something while screaming, there’s usually a exclamation mark. But that’s just me.
Final Verdict?
- This story is worth your time, and it’s clear the Author grows with every chapter, so if you like risks, mystery, brutal style, and others? Give this story a try. ( You’ll enjoy it ☺️ ) - emssitumorangRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is a good one. The premise that it has is something I haven't seen in before to my knowledge, especially not on Royal Road. At first it started out a certain way and I was sure it was going to go down that route but the more I read, the more mysteries started to appear and just left me questioning more, feeling quite intrigued.
The grammar of the story is basically immaculate and I found no jarring problems with it whatsoever. It is a great auxillary support to the style of the story that -- while being quite dense (though I am certainly not one to speak on that particular matter) -- renders a great descriptive narrative to immerse yourself into. This is a great feat for the author.
The story itself takes place in a world that at first reads like your typical fantasy world though with careful attention given to the setting and the power/government structure to it. I like how there is a distinction here between the Archangel's and mage society and that of the Guardians/servants of the Emperor. Gives a good feel for complexity. And the more 'alien' elements that are introduced later to the story which I will not spoil also is great! Really good stuff.
We follow our main character Jan who is a sort of troublemaker so to speak. A little rascal and force of nature, and one with quite rebellious streak to him. I liked reading about his interactions with the world around him and his own role as our conduit from which we can learn about Kag and its surroundings. The other supporting characters also provide a clear role in the story and none of them feel like cutouts just there made to 'stand'. Now there is another pivotal character adjacent to Jan, Sill, that I really enjoy the interactions from. I won't spoil too much, but I'm just saying 'beware of rock'.
I honestly feel a little bad for Laura. Girl's being dragged into our rambunctious Jan's many problems but honestly the interaction between the two of them are great and I enjoyed reading about it.
All in all
