Description
Story is on the back burner for now. I hope to return to this when I get adequate inspiration!
One thousand years ago the battle between the Mad God and the forces of Edoria crippled both countries and forced the citizens of Agorra to shelter inside a great mountain. Now nearly a millennium later, the ambient mana level has returned and the Agorrans have been forced out of their mountain haven. Captain Alton, a seasoned soldier of Wolf strike team, must navigate a renewed war against their ancestral foes and a changing world. Alton finds himself beset by humans as well as mysterious fiends commanded by an ancient evil. He must push himself and his team to levels of power not seen in centuries to ensure the survival of his people.

- mOrphiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The author describes it as a traditional fantasy with military fantasy and progression elements mixed in. Through the first six chapters there is plenty of the first two without much of the third so far. Strong start for a trad fantasy story with an interesting prologue, despite those being out of vogue.
Style - Written in a traditional fantasy style set in a fictional world. From what is posted so far the style seems concise and easy to read. Not overly descriptive of environment or combat. Conversation between characters flows naturally. The author states that this will be a multi-point POV with only one MC. Will have to see how this develops over time.
Story - The author states that this will be a multi-point POV with only one MC. Will have to see how this develops over time. Story follows a captain in the army that leads a special teams type of unit. Without spoilers, tragedy occurs and the MC must deal with it. There are several flashbacks in the first few chapters.
Grammar - Well edited, no major grammar mistakes to note.
Character - Only ~70 pages so far but the MC is interesting enough to continue. Side characters will need more time to develop but come off a little flat for now.
Overall a good start for a trad fantasy story. Those who enjoy military fantasy will likely enjoy it. Will need to see the progression elements come in to judge. - Bookman9Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story
The story starts with an immediate hook through lore and history that take place before the main event. The prologue shows us how big the ceiling can go and I'm all in for that classic style of narratives. The pacing is smooth with no info dumps. Flashbacks are weaved in masterfully and in a way that does not break immersions.
Style
The flow between scenes is very clear and descriptive. The author knows when to take the reader back to the past and back to the current timeline without breaking the reader's focus. The description of the point of interest is also very clear and enough to paint a picture to the reader's imagination without bogging the pacing down.
Grammar
The grammar is immaculate and spotless. There are no mistakes or any glaring issues. Good job keeping it perfect.
Characters
Captain Alton is a compelling protagonist with both a balance of toughness and vulnerability. The recruits that are soon to be in Alton's team also provide depth to the narrative. Their interactions are engaging and enjoyable to read. The side characters vary in their personality and motivations. I want to see them thrive together with Alton as a complete squad.
A very good start. Keep up the great work! - DweiaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Chronicles of the Wolf is a well written story taking place in a carefully crafted world. It's an enjoyable and exciting read.
Style: Easy to understand writing that does a great job at describing environments, characters, events and action sequences. It's written well, with very good pacing, and no immersion breaking issues that I have noticed. I also enjoy the multi-PoV style, we get to see different perspectives, which the Author pulls off quite well.
Story: It's a traditional fantasy novel that has military and progression elements. The pacing is quite well done, I love the worldbuilding happening in the background. The story is engaging and a pleasure to read.
Characters: To be honest, I love how they all feel like their own persons. They don't feel artifical or made-up, the dialogue feels natural and all in all I think the author has done a great job with their characters.
Grammar: I did notice a few grammatical errors, mainly typos, but nothing that I would call a serious issue.
All in all, Chronicles of the Wolf is a well written story with an interesting world and genuine characters. If you enjoy traditional fantasy, or militaristic elements, definitely give this book a try! - GoogiemanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Disclaimer: This review is part of a Review Swap up to and including Chapter 5. However, if you have read any of my other reviews, I intend to use these swaps as an opportunity to be exposed to new fictions that might otherwise escape my notice. Chronicles of the Wolf has captured my attention for several reasons I will detail below. I will most certainly keep reading this excellent take on traditional fantasy. With that out of the way, let's get to the review!
Style: This story seizes upon one of the strengths of third-person narration by giving readers a broad sense of scope for the world as early as the prologue. We learn of the vast abilities held by the Mad God while also having many great mysteries and powers of the land and sea teased at. The story promises grand things and makes it clear that it will be able to deliver even when the focus of he story shifts down in scale.
There were a few times during action sequences I noticed repeated phrases used in close proximity such that it pulled me out of the flow and rhythm.
Story: This story does an excellent job of establishing the peaks of power early on and then introducing their protagonist to a path to that peak. It gives the reader something to anticipate. As of chapter 5, the importance of war and military to the progression of the story is highlighted and strongly delivered and the tragedy inspiring the protagonist's growth is well handled. There is plenty to love about the budding story that will keep you coming back to read more.
Grammar: The grammar and syntax are strong. I didn't notice any errors that would merit a reduction in score.
Character: I found myself intrigued by the sprawling life the Mad God lived. The author did an amazing job of conveying the depths of their existence in a limited number of words. The raw emotions experienced by the primary protagonist as they suffer tragedy and connect to powers once dormant are tastefully handled. As the cast continues to expand, I am looking forward t - LuminstateRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0STORY
The prologue sets the scene, although if you are one of the people who doesn't like them you can go straight to the first chapter. The first chapter starts off with a cliffhanger, as we see the main character struggling for his life. If you like competent MCs with a lot of life experience, you will enjoy this. Once we get past the main excitement at the beginning it almost slides into military training/slice of life, as we focus on all the different characters who will come together to be part of the main thread of the story.
CHARACTERS
If you really like focusing on character backstory and character building in detail, then you will like this. Each character has a different personality and a fully fleshed out backstory, which we get to see as the story progresses.
SETTING
The setting is revealed in the prologue, and in the synopsis. Most of the story focuses on the interaction between the characters and their personal journeys, but it would be nice to see a bit more world-building included.
STYLE
A lot of the story is told via flashbacks, which can be a little disconcerting at first as you jump around the timeline, but you soon get used to it.
GRAMMAR
The sentences are well-structured and the spelling is accurate. There are very few grammatical errors. - MonoDrakenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So far, from what I have read, this story is well written and thought out. There are several moments where the author has clearly put in a lot of effort into conveying their plans to the reader, all of which helps to advance the story in more ways than one.
Style: The style is straight to the point. At times though, it does become dry and rather difficult to read. This is more of a personal opinion, which could change person to person.
Story: The story has the plot stated out. There weren't any crazy moments that made me feel that the threads were going nowhere or slow. There are parts where it shows how much thought the author put in to making sure tactics and action scenes come off well.
Grammar: The grammar is well done. I couldn't find any moments where I was absolutely livid with what I read, nor did I see any run-on sentences and so on. The author has a good grasp on the English language, one that helps improve the story.
Character: The characters are really interesting and above all, don't feel like add-ons to supplement the main character. They give the impression that they exist in this world at this time with their own thoughts and ideas. These characters all act accordingly and don't seem to act bizarre for no reason. It's clear the author put in work to make a good impression with character dialogue and discussions, something I will say is quite nice. - One Way JusticeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story: Honestly, it’s almost refreshing to see a classic prologue (apparently now judged by many a faux-pas in fantasy because it’s become a cliché?!); Kael and Kuthal have a great complementary relationship (distant/detached vs proximal/duty). I won’t delve into the specifics of the prologue, but will say a bit about the story after it. We change pov to Alton, the real protagonist, who is faced with some gruesome facts about the world, partly owing to his own involvement. This sets hem before the task of surviving... physically as well as emotionally.
Characters: Kael and Kuthal have a good contrasting relationship that makes their interactions engaging (prologue). Captain Alton of the wolf strike team is a die-hard soldier-type character with a lot of grit but also a very human vulnerability to him; he struggles both outside as well as his own mind, coming to grips with the dire realities of his world.
Style: Engaging writing; the prose is – like in most fantasy novels – strongly descriptive, with a strong penchant for worldbuilding. Still, this does not detract from the action; the author has found a good balance between the two. This ensures proper pacing and reader engagement.
Grammar: Nothing bad to remark on here. A well-edited story. - BeomJunKooRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0While both high fantasy and military are genres I'm personally not too crazy about (I'm more a low/urban fantasy person, but I digress ^_^;), this story not only got me hooked pretty good but also found a way to merge the two very different genres together and create something great.
I've already kind of said it in the review's title, but the story feels like what you would get if you took the epic fantasy setting of Lord Of The Rings and added the military grit/action of Starship Troopers - minus the satire on fascism - that shows how much of a heavy ordeal war can be.
Which brings me to the characters; Alton comes across as everything you'd expect from a great military leader figure while still showing very human vulnerability due to past experiences - going back to what I said about how the story depicts war - making him an intriguing character to follow. The trainees are also worth getting invested in, the ones with the most focus carrying their own backgrounds and growth over time.
I also have nothing but compliments to say about the style, which is written in a very lively way of high-quality that really enriches the feelings one gets out of reading every scene, especially the action-packed ones. The grammar only has one or two hiccups every once in a while, which is barely a problem, if at all.
Overall, despite being something I'm unfamiliar with, I'm glad I gave this a try. 👍 - SkarabraeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: The story's style is very good. The author's way of writing is unique, and the word choice is very good for getting across the tone of the story. I can say the same about the story's use of the literary device of imagery. You get a good idea of both what's going on and what the the tone should be from it.
Story: The story is paced at just the right pace. It also develops exactly as it needs to when it needs to. The story itself is quite interesting. It's essentially a military story in a fantasy world. The main characters are part of a military team and it details their military expedition. It also goes into detail on how brutal it can be. All in all, the story does a good job of getting across what it needs to.
Grammar: Any grammatical errors are either too minor to be distracting or already corrected.
Character: The story's characters are realistic and fairly three-dimensional. They are also well depicted; however, you don't get enough of a chance to know them for me to give this category five stars. Still, the characters are interesting and generally well depicted.
Overall, I would recommend this fiction. - PhysicleRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall: 4.5 stars. An exciting and engaging read with minor grammar and stylistic issues. (Very minor).
Style: Written in the third person, which is a good choice, since the story introduces us to a lot of characters right off the bat. The first chapters fluctuate between a flashback leading up to the present situation our main character finds himself in, but it's neatly done and doesn't detract from the story at all. Some paragraphs are quite long and can be a bit arduous to read, but nothing too bad. Maybe it's just my "instant gratification brain" working against me here.
The prose is very poetic and presented in a unique writing style that fits the story incredibly well. Plenty of exposition and with the way it's written you can feel that this is a war story. The poems are a nice touch.
Grammar score: A couple of mistakes in each chapter. Some words that are used in one sentence are then used again immediately after. A few inconsistencies in the writing and some misrepresentation of direct speech when presented inside large swaths of exposition. Other than that nothing really stands out as problematic. No homophonic errors which is something I myself care about greatly. It always takes me out of the story.
Story: Very well-crafted story. Following Alton and his band of warriors during a war that seems to have been raging for a long time (since the death of their nation's very powerful mage). We find Alton and his soldiers stuck inside a cave where they have to fight off a huge amount of, what I read as "magical zombies". The magic system seems well flushed out, and I enjoyed the pacing. I'm not gonna flesh this out more as I feel that you should read the story yourself and follow Alton's journey. Safe to say that stuff happens in that cave that will change his future for good.
Character score: Alton is very well done. As are his fellow soldiers. The way Alton, his comrades, and the army is written and described really makes you feel like you're reading a story
