Description
Konrad's brother was the hero of the valleys when he was chosen as the champion of the Father. Now Konrad has been chosen too, only his gods are slightly smaller, the smallest in fact.
He’s already got three gifts, two quests and he owes a favour to an old hermit.
As soon as he buys his freedom he can set off adventuring - if he can find a sword.
More Info about the book:
CoSG is a slow-burn epic fantasy. The story starts off slowly, more like a slice of life than action-adventure, but it gets there.
In this book you'll find magic, arcanists, witches, faelen realms, and champions of the gods (clerics) who maintain the power and status of their deities. The world is mostly light but there are touches of darkness our MC will have to wade through.
Expect the MC to progress up from being low powered as he receives new abilities and skills from his gods in return for completing quests. He'll soon be swept up by forces beyond his control, but for now he's wide eyed and stepping out into the world.
Update: book complete and ready to be enjoyed!

- HoneybucketRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am enjoying the story quite a bit and recommend it to anyone who’s enjoys epic fantasy.
Original concept to me. The characters are diverse and easy to identify with. Possibly a little light for some readers. I’m half way through what has been written so far, and it could be a very large story. I’m entertained and that’s as much as I hope for. - A Failed Author (TLH)Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall/overview- The story is definitely original, very well-written, has interesting characters, and thus is worth reading.
Story- The story is, at least for me, one of the biggest strengths in this fiction. Although I have solely read the first 5 chapters, I can already tell that there is more to the world that what has been covered. The plot begins before, and goes beyond, the story narrated. Of what has been covered so far, there some very few clichés, but even they have been presented with a unique twist.
Style- My opinion here might be tied to the story. I really like the style. It is clear, colorful, and easy to visualize what is happening. It is one of the best, if not the best, fictions I have read in terms of style. This said, the progression is not very fast (I would describe it as medium-paced). I think that the first chapter fails to create a hook. This is a problem that I also have encountered in my fictions (I think). However, if you manage to get past the first chapter, the pace and interest start to build up. It is similar to a snowball, the size, pace, and significance increase as you go (if you get my analogy).
Grammar- Definitely outstanding. Truly exceptionally written, the words are carefully placed and the diction is amazing. If anything kept me going through the slumps it was the amazing diction/writing/grammar.
Character Score- Good characters and a solid development. I am not very sure about slow-burn fantasy so I cannot add much more...
It will certainly be top 1000 and maybe top 100 one day
(Updated in chapter 10) - BalerikRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0In Champion of Small Gods, PeterRobersBooks presents a compelling story through his commitment to strong characters and believable dialogue. By centering his story upon these pillars, he is able to construct a vibrant, exciting world pulls the audience in from the opening sentences and never lets go.
Style - Champion of Small Gods is a rich, thought-provoking tale that intrigues the audience with its concept and satisfies them with its execution. In it, PeterRobertsBooks utilizes a deft hand to balance the glimpses of a wider world with emotionally charged character interraction. The result is a potent brew of short, concise sentence structure supported by flourishes of vivid literary artistry.
Character - From the first chapter, PeterRobertsBooks sends a clear message that this is a character driven story. The world develops in the background through teasing drips and drabs of information while the dialogue takes center stage. As the story progresses, the chracter's interraction with one another brings into focus the social dynamics that are a key component in this multi-layered story.
Story - Champion of Small Gods is centered around a young man named Konrad. Joined by his faitful dog Spirit, he spends his days toiling beneath the thumb of a local plutocrat. Here again, PeterRobertsBooks does a masterful job of conveying the inner struggle of a young man who is eager to fulfill his obligations to home and hearth, but desperate to find a more gratifying path through life. When that path finally presents itself, Konrad must quickly adjust his perspective to accomodate the realities of a much wider world.
Grammar - The author makes frequent revisions to his work to clean up any grammatical errors. In my read through I found no errors that significantly reduced the story's readibility.
Overall - Champion of Small Gods is one of the rare treats that defies generalizations. At times it feels like a cozy slice-of-life fantasy. There are scenes that hint at sun - A V DalcourtRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a story about an underdog. No, it's a story about the under-dog of underdogs. And it’s a story about powerful underdogs too. It’s a story about personal belief, belief and willingness to serve a higher power, and to some degree, self-sacrifice. At least after reading what’s available on RR and fair chunk of what I got to read behind the scenes… that’s the impression I have.
The story is slow paced for your typical RR reader, but it unfolds very nicely as I would expect a traditional coming of age story to read. I was even tempted to curl up on the couch to read, because the story genuinely reminded me of a paperback.
The shining point in this writer’s skill set is their ability to craft strong sympathetic characters through which the story follows. Inversely, the writer also does a good job with characters you love to hate. There are more than a few of those.
I hadn’t noticed anything with regards to grammar, proving another easy read for folks who are less pedantic about word choice and punctuation.
Overall, the story is well worth the time for folks looking for something a little different from your standard RR fair. - BadgerButlerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There is something so Epic and wholesome about Konrad and his many quests, the characters he meets ( and almost inevitably befriends ) are compelling, I find myself just as eager to read a chapter focussed on Athir or Rolo as I am the main character.
Delightful pop culture references subtly pepper this tale - the description of an Arch Demon had me cackling with mirth!
I highly recommend this tale to all lovers of fantasy, my only regret is that I can't share it with my mother - who would have loved it, as much as I do - DischtopiaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Champion of Small Gods follows Konrad, a struggling member of his village's underclass, on his rise to power after a squad of small, eccentric gods become his patrons.
Style: This story is very much in the mold of traditional fantasy novels. It displays an excellent understanding of pacing, and of promises and payoffs, that makes each chapter rewarding for the reader. There is a comforting and familiar quality to the author's writing style, and with a little more polish the story could stand alongside the great fantasy works it strives to emulate.
Story: This is the engine that drives the good feelings. Stop me if you've heard this one: an unremarkable young man from a small, rural community lucks his way into extraordinary powers...
No shade. Authors use the formula because it works. Fortunately for this author, they execute on it well enough to keep it compelling. The wishing board, god statues and social hierarchy present in these early chapters form an effective mechanism for bringing the classic appeal of this story structure to life.
Grammar: I thought of docking a half-star here, but I want to encourage the author as much as I can. The story is a half-step away from true greatness, after all, and it is only grammar that stands in the way.
I noticed some damaging typos (like a "wooden" cloak) and a lack of grammatical consistency in the dialogue of the small gods. Given that the author is channelling the conventions of traditional fantasy so strongly, I found these moments more damaging to the reading experience than I otherwise would.
When you chase the feel of works of a high standard, people expect that same standard of you for better or worse. Solid grammar is how you tell your reader that they are in the hands of a master. Tightening it up will amplify your already great pacing, sharpen your already sharp dialogue to a honed point. Then, maybe tradpub-spoiled babies like me will stop complaining ;)
Character: This is where the author really needs no help - Dragonsune Of LegendRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A strong story. There'll be spots where you'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll want to pull your hair out in frustration. There were a *couple* of pacing issues here or there, but it didn't detract enough from the story to lower my score. Plus what story is perfect? So y'know, totally worth the read!
- DuvilRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0In this story I found a true progression fantasy, emphasis on the fantasy. The author is crafting a true fantasy epic, and it is exciting to be a part of its early life.
Style:
Simple, clear, effective. In short, everything you want in a fun fantasy novel. Despite the concise nature, the author's personal style shines through.
Story:
A true hero's journey, where some details are tinkered with to make a unique story come alive. The introductory portion already has me hooked, right from the scene of 'village unity.' If you've read it, you know what I mean. It is heartwarming and hopeful, which is a tone I absolutely love.
Grammar:
Great! Some minor mistakes, but nothing overly noticeable.
Character:
Easily will become 5 stars no doubt. The author knows what they are doing, and the pieces are in place for some great character work. Of course, it is early, so the characters haven't been given a real chance to shine, but Konrad is an interesting protagonist and Spirit deserves the mostest stars!
All in all, the start of a true fantasy epic is something to behold. Can't wait to see what's in store!
(I can't wait for Kon to totally fireball all over the place) - CapaluchuRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is captivating. It starts with a slow earnest pace, allowing us to get to know the MC and his fellow villagers. The characters have depth and flavor and the simple setting allows it to be immediately accessible.
The writing is excellent. I love the voice he story has, it reminds me of many of my favorite fantasy authors. The only thing I would like would be a bit more description. The while the pace of the story is a wonderfully gentle one, the tale flies by quickly because it is a bit lean when it comes to painting the scenes. I am not saying the story suffers from this, but I think it would truly be outstanding with just a bit more narrative to let us picture the scenes fully.
This is one you want to read. I have only given one other five-star review on RR, this one easily earned my second. I started reading this as a Review Swap but I intend to stick with this one. - JacksonWritesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Without spoiling anything, the way this story sets up its pace, tone, hook and characters is downright masterful, all while having the restraint to take its time with the opening.
There is the old addage that stories should begin where they begin, a lot of the time this results in stories that cut to the quick a little too... well, quick. Not Chapion of the Small Gods, it sets hooks in you and, as of chapter six, asks you to take a walk with it. This does a fantastic job of setting the floor of the progression fantasy, and making you look forward to, and probably eventually revel in, Konrad's rise to power.
Fantastic opening. Tons of promise.
