Champion of Small Gods [A Fantasy Epic]
Community Rating
Description
Konrad's brother was the hero of the valleys when he was chosen as the champion of the Father. Now Konrad has been chosen too, only his gods are slightly smaller, the smallest in fact.
He’s already got three gifts, two quests and he owes a favour to an old hermit.
As soon as he buys his freedom he can set off adventuring - if he can find a sword.
More Info about the book:
CoSG is a slow-burn epic fantasy. The story starts off slowly, more like a slice of life than action-adventure, but it gets there.
In this book you'll find magic, arcanists, witches, faelen realms, and champions of the gods (clerics) who maintain the power and status of their deities. The world is mostly light but there are touches of darkness our MC will have to wade through.
Expect the MC to progress up from being low powered as he receives new abilities and skills from his gods in return for completing quests. He'll soon be swept up by forces beyond his control, but for now he's wide eyed and stepping out into the world.
Update: book complete and ready to be enjoyed!

- A Failed Author (TLH)Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall/overview- The story is definitely original, very well-written, has interesting characters, and thus is worth reading.
Story- The story is, at least for me, one of the biggest strengths in this fiction. Although I have solely read the first 5 chapters, I can already tell that there is more to the world that what has been covered. The plot begins before, and goes beyond, the story narrated. Of what has been covered so far, there some very few clichés, but even they have been presented with a unique twist.
Style- My opinion here might be tied to the story. I really like the style. It is clear, colorful, and easy to visualize what is happening. It is one of the best, if not the best, fictions I have read in terms of style. This said, the progression is not very fast (I would describe it as medium-paced). I think that the first chapter fails to create a hook. This is a problem that I also have encountered in my fictions (I think). However, if you manage to get past the first chapter, the pace and interest start to build up. It is similar to a snowball, the size, pace, and significance increase as you go (if you get my analogy).
Grammar- Definitely outstanding. Truly exceptionally written, the words are carefully placed and the diction is amazing. If anything kept me going through the slumps it was the amazing diction/writing/grammar.
Character Score- Good characters and a solid development. I am not very sure about slow-burn fantasy so I cannot add much more...
It will certainly be top 1000 and maybe top 100 one day
(Updated in chapter 10) - A V DalcourtRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a story about an underdog. No, it's a story about the under-dog of underdogs. And it’s a story about powerful underdogs too. It’s a story about personal belief, belief and willingness to serve a higher power, and to some degree, self-sacrifice. At least after reading what’s available on RR and fair chunk of what I got to read behind the scenes… that’s the impression I have.
The story is slow paced for your typical RR reader, but it unfolds very nicely as I would expect a traditional coming of age story to read. I was even tempted to curl up on the couch to read, because the story genuinely reminded me of a paperback.
The shining point in this writer’s skill set is their ability to craft strong sympathetic characters through which the story follows. Inversely, the writer also does a good job with characters you love to hate. There are more than a few of those.
I hadn’t noticed anything with regards to grammar, proving another easy read for folks who are less pedantic about word choice and punctuation.
Overall, the story is well worth the time for folks looking for something a little different from your standard RR fair. - StainedGlassThreadsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Champion of Small Gods follows Konrad, a second-class citizen of a farming town who exists in a world where gods will, very rarely, bestow powerful gifts upon champions sent to fulfill tasks and quests for them, the stuff of legends. On the day of the choosing ceremony, Konrad is left flabbergasted when the gods choose him...specifically, the small gods, who are extremely old, weak, and all but faded entirely from memory. With the handful of minor blessings they could spare him and a few vague, minor requests, Konrad wanders out into the wider world...
And what a world it is. The worldbuilding of 'Champion of Small Gods' is extremely well-crafted and certainly a high point, and feels very lived in and internally consistent. Furthermore, all characters feel very believable as people living within this world. It is a gritty and messy world in a very grounded and believable way, but not necessarily a grimdark world.
That said, while spelling is very good, grammar and punctuation have a great many errors per chapter, and legibility and style take a hit due to the lack of commas. Your mileage may vary with how much it affects your enjoyment of the piece, but it is something to keep in mind.
All in all, a very solid work and a welcome addition to the world of progression fic. Whether you enjoy progression stories or more traditional fantasy, it is well-worth a read. - Tanmaya TewariRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It was a nice read, like the way the characters are developed and overall story is tied together.
It would be nice if you do a follow up on the clods and their new land or on how the faelen escape the echo.
That's all I want to say. I enjoyed reading it thank you for writing it and sharing it. - TheorangeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is genuinely one of the best stories I've read on royal road, I adore it, and the concept is so interesting.
The characters are well developed and are entertaining, I haven't found a single grammar issue throughout the whole story thus far. Additionally, the pacing is amazing.
Reviews must be 50 words long - TonyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story, so far, is easy to read and engaging, with fun characters and great use of eye dialect.
STORY – Engaging. A young man, poor, humble, kind-hearted, and disabled (or handicapable if you dislike the other word) is chosen as the champion to minor deities, and given some minor powers (and his dog gets one too), but not the great respect that goes with being chosen as the champion of the few major gods.
STYLE – Easy and pleasant to read with solid prose, sometimes humorous, with a focus on interesting dialogue, and a great use of eye dialect.
CHARACTERS – So far this isn’t supposed to be super complex story with a ton of nuance and gray areas and moral ambiguity. It’s like Harry Potter where the good guys are good and the bad guys are bad and you know which is which. The MC is extremely likable and sympathetic and probably great for insertion and power-fantasies.
GRAMMAR – Pretty great. A lot of effort went into readability and flow.
I can’t wait to see where this goes, and if you’re looking for something fun and engaging and keeping you turning pages to see what happens next, this is most likely what you’re looking for. - art27Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story is well crafted with a nice atmosphere. It's starting slowly but it feels organical. The dialogs are natural and not set up. The character of the Protagonist fits well with his humble background.
I'm curious how this story will evolve. There is potential there and I'm looking forward to the next chapters! - Dragonsune Of LegendRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A strong story. There'll be spots where you'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll want to pull your hair out in frustration. There were a *couple* of pacing issues here or there, but it didn't detract enough from the story to lower my score. Plus what story is perfect? So y'know, totally worth the read!
- HoneybucketRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am enjoying the story quite a bit and recommend it to anyone who’s enjoys epic fantasy.
Original concept to me. The characters are diverse and easy to identify with. Possibly a little light for some readers. I’m half way through what has been written so far, and it could be a very large story. I’m entertained and that’s as much as I hope for. - NocturnaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Not too many chapters out, but really solid start. Main character is somewhere between optimistic and a little naive in a world that doesn't like changes to the status quo. Some other compelling characters so far (His patron gods haven't had a lot of screentime yet, but their banter is solid). Lots of mysteries set up, looking forward to seeing how the author delivers.
