- Mr Alex666Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This one is truly a hidden gem on RR!
While it is nothing ever seen before - spoiler: it's an isekai - it still has rarely used tropes and is worth a read. First, the MC isn't a shut-in otaku, who goes on a rampage five minutes after isekaied, but someone, who had experience with fighting. Even so, or exactly because of this, he doesn't start fights with random scary cats. If you tactically reposition yourself in time, you can choose your fights later on. That doesn't mean, he is a coward, but has common sense - if you can only wave your man-part at monsters, you should be somewhere else. Fast.
The story, as of Chapter 11, is just starting. The MC got isekaied, repositioned himself a few times, found an abandoned castle, and is just starting to figure out, where he is, and what everything is about. It is slow, but that is exactly the point. The story is intriguing enough to be interested, in where it will go, what and why happened. I will go with a 5.
While the style needs some polishing and work, it seems, the author is approachable and willing to listen to advice. While there is nothing seriously wrong with the style, there are points, you feel, could have been better. I chuckled a bit when Icelanding summer was described as warm (15 degrees C, mean average high). While for folks in higher latitudes that could be a heatwave and you have to break out the sun blocker, 15°C for me is a not-exactly-warm spring day. A 4,5.
The MC is the point, where the story really shines (this is after a serious rewrite of Ch. 1). He is quite well fleshed out, the first Chapter is mostly about his background, and there are well-placed nuggets of information later on, that he becomes a relatable, competent, and not overpowered know-it-all. However, there are probably left-over snippets from an earlier version (?), where the MC isn't just a boxer/kendo pupil, but also a good student, and also well-versed in games and light fantasy. I do think, those are leftovers because the backgroun - mim117Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Amazing story so far! Great world building, and interesting plot. Characters are starting to be fleshed out and the cliches are being minimalised. The only thing I'd say could be better is the chapter update, been a while since a chapter has be let out. Please don't give up on this book author!!!
- TrueSelfRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I would like to start by commending the writer's effort so far. While the opening may not be to everyone’s liking, I enjoyed it personally. Once the story picks up, the writer does an excellent job sticking to the traditional litRPG format after the protagonist is transported to another world. While some aspects of the story may feel familiar, the writer adds some unique twists that keep things interesting for me. It's worth noting that despite the abundance of litRPG stories on this website, this particular story has its own distinctive qualities. Overall, the writer shows a lot of promise and potential. I will continue to follow and update this review to see where the story goes down the line.
Style:
The first chapter is a slow intro, giving us the context of who the main character is and his background. Pretty standard, in my opinion, to provide the reader with some feel of who the character will be. This adds flavor once the story starts, and the reader must make an emotional investment when the tension inevitably comes. Show vs. Tell is a struggle at times but does not kill the general vibe of the story, allowing for an enjoyable read.
Story:
The first couple of chapters seems a bit slow as the character goes through the discovery of his new surroundings and questions the circumstances instead of jumping straight into the action - a win, in my opinion. However, the pacing picks up once the author has introduced the setting, and the MC is forced to stop pondering and act. Pretty interesting to see such an approach being used, as usually, the MC either gets a mentor figure or is thrown into action he is ill-equipped to handle from the get-go.
Grammar:
I believe English is not the author’s first language, which leads us to some misused words and phrases here and there. Not an issue, in my opinion, as it does not break the story's immersion or general feel.
Character:
The main character (Ethan) comes off as an everyday guy thrown into circumstances he is not fully - VEXIARoyal Road★★★★ 3.5I’ll begin by saying that this is cearly the work of a first-time writer and should be treated as such. As with most beginners, the writer starts us off with a rather soul-draining info dump opening. After that, the following chapters are pretty standard as far as litRPG after the MC meets Truck-kun and winds up in another world. Several moments of déjà vu, but also a few interesting elements and twists. That said, to be bluntly honest, nothing particularly memorable stands out to me that makes this any different from the other litRPGs that oversaturate this website.
Style: The first chapter, as mentioned, is an info dump of passive narration that, in hindsight, felt more like the character's resume to the reader. You will get his physical description, down to his height and weight, and then some more substance as far as his family background. The passive writing dies down a bit after that, but a “Tell” vs “Show” style persists that suffocates any form of tension or emotional connection to the main character.
Story: As of chapter 4, we are still in the beginning, but it also feels like we might be on the cusp of a tutorial mode. If you like survival-esk litRPGs, where the character wakes up butt naked and has to quickly figure out how to survive while wandering through a forest, then cave/tunnel, and then dark gloomy (possibly cursed?) castle, this might be right up your alley. I’d say the pacing is fine overall (minus the first chapter). It’s still early days.
Grammar: Tenses, awkward phrasing, and misused words are prevalent here and there. Some editing or perhaps listening to the story aloud might enable the author to pick out these irregularities more consistently.
Character Score: While we do know a bit about Ethan (largely thanks to the info dump/resume of the first chapter), his personality and character remain largely a mystery. He comes across as very two-dimensional with no tangible emotion, even when facing an elephant-size tiger-monster or dog-size rat ( - Sam WilliamsRoyal Road★★★ 2.5This story starts great. Honestly worth reading the first 40 or so chapters. It's well written with an interesting magic system and the Mc is quite likeable. This unfortunately comes to an end pretty much as soon as he gets to civilisation. All of a sudden the MC goes from a competent smart character to an overly trusting idiot.
