- EiferRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0First off the bat, this story is pure fluff. For those people who expect realism with the military tag, you will be disappointed. This is more like a militia or family unit mercenary outfit, but in space.
In addition, there's the usual pet-peeves about "clips" and marines being called soldiers and similar stuff.
Anyway, i generally like the story, but there's a lot of plot holes and weird character roles. The ship captain also serves as the mission commander, yet also joins scouting parties and rescue missions directly, just to name the most prominent issue.
Personally, I enjoy the story after I put aside all expectations of realism. It's a story where I can turn my brain off and just enjoy some fluff with the occational chapter filled with mayhem. - SeanchieDreamsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story completely fulfills its billing as 'fluffy'. There are military space ship bits, but those are basically window dressing. It would ruin the fluffy immersion, after all.
At some point, they even take leave, and hang around the house for chapters upon chapters on end. Yes, that's more or less all they do. Pure fluff.
As other reviews have mentioned, there are issues with realism (especially with the military bits. Those are 'hard realism' things since the military has very precise rules... which go out the window here fairly often.) But those issues are beside the point. We are here for the fluff. So having more realistic bits would be a distraction.
As I've implied, the story itself is fairly weak, as it minimizes the plot in favor of focusing on the characters. AKA the fluff. The characters and their relationship to each other is THE purpose of the story, and nothing else. That's what is fluff is all about, after all.
Grammatically, it is clear that the author is not writing in their native language. But that is more because of hints, than any actual issues. As frequently seen in such writers, their disclaimers about their writing is overblown. I've seen much, much worse in native writers. There are just a few 'odd' word choices and turns of phrases which make it obvious. Other than that? It's good.
This story is great IF you know what you are looking for and expecting. Fluff. If you want something else, go somewhere else. - SpaceyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0CASE is an enjoyable fluffy romance story; it's a relaxing read that honestly melts the heart.
It's gives off a more militant flavoured star trek vibe with which I kind of enjoy.
There are some plot holes, but I honestly didn't notice them until they were pointed out. But then again, I didn't really go in expecting it to be perfect I just wanted a nice gay space opera to read after reading Ivil Antagonist by RavenDaggers and Slipspace by JessicaRae. It did deliver on that with an adorable pair of useless gays lol.
The fluff was good for the soul, overall a good read 10/10 would recommend. - ErdosRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The main story—the romance story, of course—is super-sweet I've got to say. My lord, it's only been twenty chapters and things have gotten oh-so-close already. Will they? Won't they? I guess I'm going to have to read at least a few more...
This story is fluff. GL fluff; as advertised. It also is a militarized version of Star Trek and doesn't sensibly connect its characters to that setting.
Lauren as the war hero turned captain of humanity's first FTL-capable ship barely works—one has to ask how her known emotional baggage hasn't disqualified her. Wartime propaganda influencing decisions, maybe. She doesn't even do “captain stuff” though. Gunnery Sgt. Lauren would have worked just fine for the story and been more believable to boot.
Luna would have worked better as a scientist. The ship's resident anthropologist, maybe. The third member of a spy team whose more task-oriented compatriots got killed in an accident. She's written as a sweet and innocent character—not as a military officer.
I like both the setting and the characters—I don't like how they're knitted together. I like Star Trek and I like this story, just know that things go more the way of Discovery than TNG.
I know this is a pretty garbage review, talking about how things should have been done and all that, but I hope I got my point across at least. - IcebirdRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5I will update the review as I read more, but so far I have a hard time immersing myself in the story due to some very weak illogical story plots.
The first human ftl exploration ship, with a hero commander. Great. But all the following issues would never be permitted in a military multi year exploration mission:
A large part of the staff didn't met before the launch. Even less trained together...
The commander have several known issues, including psychological problems, depression.
The XO, beside not having been vetted correctly (an alien spy that came recently on earth, and she already have a lieutenant commander rank??), is a bubbling mess, constantly stuttering, and don't give a professional feeling at all. I preferred the first impression she gave, of being a cold, unfeeling efficient machine.
The commander participating to the ground exploration is also strange. A ship commander don't go on front lines, someone should at least have been commenting on that.
The ship endure an acceleration effect when going ftl. Ok. Then why the heck are the officers standing and told to "grab something"??? They should have seats with adapted measures!
So far, the story give the feeling of a star trek episode, with all the good, but also the bad (shaking bridge with flailing personnel, the captain doing everything personally, etc...)
I had a hard time watching star trek because of the flawed logic I saw in it, and I have the same problem with this story so far.
