- knottedpuzzleRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There's typos, and incorrect words, looks like fans have been making suggestions to correct them however. Overall, the story is amazing, the characters are believable, and have depth. The main character isn't omnipotent, makes believable mistakes rather than silly ones. The obstacles are reasonable, the social interactions spot on. The villains actually think and make plans... I love this story, not gonna lie... and have been working my way through the authors other works.
- Golden TigerRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I like the premise, the story is well told so far. Adding in background as the story proceeds is a good approach, allowing for plenty of action as the plot develops. The character development is reasonable if a bit slow to this point, more details regarding the MC's motivations would be welcome. Overall a pleasant read with enough action and plot twists to keep interest going.
- StagnantCRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I love to read a good fan-fiction.
A-lot of fan-fiction can sometimes leaving me feeling embarrassed about reading it afterwards, too many tropes, too cringey, too nonsensical.
So every-time I find a fiction that breaks that mold and creates something that can truly stand on its own in a pre-established universe I can't help but to be overjoyed.
This novel is a great read, it has a gradual but slow increase in power that allows the character to better explore the world around him as closer to a normal cape, versus one that's held on-top of pedestal.
The character is complex and not one dimensional and I find most characters to be the same way and it's very refreshing.
I'm not the best at reviews, but if you're reading this trying to decide if this worth reading, I'd say you should give it an honest shot. - CaduceusRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I was ready for an easy-to-read and sloppy power-fantasy. Instead I got a well-written story with an actually intelligent MC that, while strong, does not immediately become a Lung-killer or something. His powers are good, but mostly because they are versatile and any of the powerhouses like Lung or Purity could demolish him in a fight. He is also smart enough to know this.
The first few chapters are a bit too exposition heavy for my taste (especially the first), but after that the story gets a good rhythm.
The characters are good and likeable. The MCs companion is a bit bland but she isn't the focus so I give her a pass.
My main criticism is the fact that nothing has really challenged the MC yet. Even his one fight with a gang was mostly resolved with a complete win. I wish there was more conflict and things that made him make hard choices/sacrifices. He hasn't lost anyone, no one has gotten hurt, he hasn't been forced into any bad deals, nothing. - ElorieRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The whole story is completely pointless.
When you can get the magic you ask for and you're facing parahumans, you ask for magic that disables parahuman powers. On sight, in an area, temporarily, permanently...
Especially when you know - after you check the library and learn that they use a 'corona polenta' or whatever in the brain for their powers. Easily disabled.
The author forgot the ask a six-year-old if there were holes in his story. - DoomedButDreamingRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0TLDR; This story has potential, but currently lacks memorable events. While the characters are likeable and well-developed, the protagonist's lack of change after each event diminishes the story's momentum and impact. I recommend waiting for future developments before reading.
Let me start off by saying that this review is going to be a little unfair and that the rating will probably change as the story develops, but as it stands I wouldn't suggest reading this story right now. Let me explain:
This story is pretty good, the characters are likeable and are lifelike enough that it doesn't seem too forced. The protagonist also has a good powerset and feels natural enough in the setting, that being said in the sixteen chapters that I read not much changes.
Don't get me wrong, things happen and future development is being foreshadowed. But, the protagonist just kind of motors along unchanged even after each event and just returns to the holding pattern established from Chapter One. Which honestly kills the; gravity, momentum, and vibrancy of the work itself.
*Chapter 32 Update*
Alright, so the holding pattern of "Does things, returns to base" has finally been disrupted at the end of Chapter 32. I'm not sure if this will actually switch up the established pattern, but it is moving in the right direction so I'm adding another half star to my review making it 4/5.
I'm hoping that this chapter is a hallmark that signifies that the author will advance the plot a mite faster, or at least make the "base-centric" bits more interesting to really capture the reader's attention. Don't get me wrong, the base portions are important... They're also very homogenous and detract from the pacing of the story when contrasted against the more energetic and varied heroic encounters and actions.
*Chapter 80 Update*
The story is still very good, but the author should add the Slice of Life tag. Action and development happens, but the story pacing is still very calm. Nothing puts the reader on p - CestarianRoyal Road★★★ 3.0This story is like 80% filler, just going deep into the details of the magic system. For 500 pages, there is very little content. But it's like you get one chapter of story for every 3 chapters of filler at best.
If you want to read a story about a guy that gets magical knowledge pushed inside his brain, and then in excruciating detail makes use of that knowledge, then this is for you.
Otherwise it's not. As a worm fanfic it's also a miserable failure, by having a powerful protagonist that never fails, the dark and gritty vibes of the original story are completely lost, and it just reads like an average power trip.
