Borne of Desire
Community Rating
Description
A man given a new lease on life finds himself amongst pokemon. From his memories of pokemon as a whole, he assumes the power of pokemon and the world around him runs on convenient fate, rule of cool, and cheesy friendship just like any other anime. Unfortunately for everyone else, he's 100% right.
Takes place in a universe similar to but separate from Borne of Caution.
NOTE: If Borne of Caution is an attempt at a coherent and realistic look at pokemon, then, Borne of Desire is the opposite. It's all the mindless indulgence I DONT want in a serious story. It's a very seat-of-my-pants for-fun project and is written with no storyboard. Updates will be inconsistent and quality cannot be assured. Not to be taken too seriously.

- $4.99Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0When I saw the title of this story, I was worried it would be nothing but smut. To be fair, the word desire can be interpreted in a very lewd way. That being said, I am happy to report that for now all that trashy stuff is nowere to be found. Instead what you will find is a heartwarming bond and a great use of tropes. The only complaint that I really have is the fact that I have to wait for the next chapter. Heres hoping for more to come!
- Dark_Phantom779Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Great start, I'm really loving a more Adult view of things, really like how the main character is more protector than protagonist. If you're looking for something that is fun and kinda wonky, this is it. I'm totally with the main character trying his best to NOT be a jerk and good role model.
Really wish it continued on RR as well but the chapters I've found on other sites are well worth looking for. - GreynockRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really love the authors wonderful character building. I am in love with both this series and it's more serious counterpart. The characters are wonderful, and the story frequently makes me laugh outloud. I love your writing and eagerly look forward to any and all works you choose to share here or elsewhere.
- ShernumRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Despite only having five chapters at the time of writing this, Borne of Desire already has 166 pages worth of content, and what excellent content it is.
BoD follows the story of Julian, who ends up in the world of Pokemon following an accident at the government facility where he works. But it turns out that the world does actually follow the narrative rules of Pokemon as well - the Rule of Cool is a tangible effect, and the Power of Friendship can literally make pokemon stronger. The story is thoroughly enjoyable, and I look forward to more in the future!
Style: The style is probably the weakest part of the story - in that, it's not amazing. It is, however, perfectly serviceable. I am not ever pulled out of the story by a sequence where I think "that could have been worded better", but I also have never thought "damn, that was well said".
Story: Since the story hasn't made it very far, there's not much here. Everything that has already been set up is very interesting, and I am eagerly awaiting more, so I think five stars are deserved.
Grammar: I have noticed nothing egregious with the grammar, and not noticing the grammar is the best you can ask for.
Character: The two main characters, Julian and Lulu, are both quite fun to read. Julian especially makes for a very good PoV. The side characters, like Paul, are also all rendered a degree of personality that a lesser story might not give them.
All in all, this story is excellent, and I heartily look forward to more.

Fuggmann delivers once again. If you are already familiar with his other story then give this a go right away, Im sure you will enjoy it.
On fuggmann and this work as a pokemon fanfic
For those new to either 2 works by fuggmann I can only recommend leaving any hestitation to jump in the realm of fanfiction at the door. Fuggman's stories are marked by excellent worldbuilding and compelling characters you might not instantly attribute to any work of pokemon fanfiction. Even without the pokemon link, his works so far easily have the merits to stand on their own.
Style
Writing style wise, the flow is excellent. I have not been bothered by any major grammar mistakes and though I do not necessarily enjoy some of the more rigorous uses of bold text here and there that is more a personal taste question than an indictment.
Characters
While the world building so far has been excellent, it is clear that there is a heavy focus on character driven arcs as well. This review has been written as of chapter 2 but already you could say we have started to resolve 2 character arcs and I hope to see more in the future.
Conclusion
Good story so far, shows promise. The author has already proven before that he can deliver some good stuff: Come on and give this one a go. - LiteraryWhoRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The story is markedly inferior to its cousin Borne of Caution (the author's other work, which you are undoubtedly familiar with), but it's still a good read. It terms of delivering on it's stated premise, it performs without fault, but the aforementioned premise is just a bit too silly to let this story shine.
Still, all that said, it's well written. This story was obviously started some time after the author got a lot of practice in (on its cousin, no doubt), and so doesn't have the same rough start you find in the other one. You can also still tell that, perhaps in spite of himself, he's still put a lot of thought and care into this.
As for the question of "Should I read this?", my answer is a qualified yes. If you find the premise intriguing, absolutely. If you really like the writer's previous (and still ongoing) work, then it's certainly worth a shot. If you're looking for something that breaks away from your bog standard isekai power fantasy, then I can't reccomend it. I, personally, will probably not continue to follow its progress, though if it comes to a conclusion within a reasonable number of pages, I think I'd give it another go. - puregarnetRoyal Road★★★ 3.0I liked this better than Borne of Caution their other more popular work. Mostly because the protag isn’t constantly experiencing past TraumaTM. And the seriousness was pretty depressing over there. And also, the whole weird relationship with the Vulpix. The power dynamics of that whole thing was giving me the hibbie jibies. Especially when Vulpix was very much on the inexperienced side of the equation being a lower evolution, basically a newborn and kinda like a child experience-wise. In this one, Lulu is definitely older even if she only knows her pack and forest. It also helps that she’s fully evolved and is as tall as the protag. The balance is more equal here. We then got hit by Lulu’s pov on the protag and ooh, that is a surprising perspective. That makes sense because as we read the protag interact with other people more, you kinda get the idea that he’s a bit of a rebel? Makes one wonder if this might be the same with other trainers that have Lucario’s following them. A rather interesting bit of worldbuilding creativity there.
The whole abusing tropes thing because it’s a thing in this world that can be done makes the story pretty upbeat and cheerful too. I admit that I did skim some of the journal entries explaining that because I don’t really need that much detailed info but interesting concept. This is more of the Pokemon world is a utopia in our eyes kinda story and not something gritty and grimdark. So that helps I guess. We also see some interesting travelling partners which is kinda refreshing.
I have to admit that while everything seems good, I don’t really have any great urge to find out what will happen next in their journey. Or to see him beat strong people. No real hook for me personally. Then we got that pushback from the world in this chapter and I kinda got a little bored? So I’m going to stop here. Read it if it interests you, the writing is pretty good. Just not quite for me. - KaylinRoyal Road★★★ 3.0Overall it's a good fun read. I definitely kept in mind with the authors warning on how it'll be the opposite of BoC so no problem there. I went into the story knowing that we shouldn't be expecting properly craft details and just author wanting to write a story for his indulgence.
The story so far is definitely somewhat fun and I can definitely see all the 'opposites' of BoC with how the team is, I meant with Paul and Zoey. Like their characters re very clearly opposition of Brendan and Zinnia.
I never really liked Paul in any stories personally but I think most people would agree considering he has a rather bad character and attitude towards his pokemon. I put up with him since his apart of the journey and I do hope that there's growth and character improvement in the future.
Other than that, I only personally have one huge problem which could be a me problem. I didn't realized the romance tag and even if there is and later in the middle of the story I realized there's that tag from the comments I just shrug it off as probably romance with other HUMANS. But I did have a slight apprehensive thought considering there was a bit of inappropriate direction in Bo so I was starting to get worried of pokephilia. And the reminder that this story is author's mindless indulgence.... Yea the last chapter (17) with that Something going on...
I'm really NOT okay with the borderline immorality stuff of Pokémons and humans so thank god the updates are up to ch17 and I can stop the breaks at there. With that I will not be reading this story any further despite how much I do actually enjoy the story plot and with the different character composition of Julian's traveling companion.
So yes a warning to those who are planning to read, pokephilia (although hasn't been confirm), the chances are VERY HIGHLY POSSIBLE. So if ur likely that it really feels uncomfortable, don't try to read this because I honestly do kind of regret a bit and need to get something clean and pure story to rela
