Description

After receiving a rare S-rank Boon, Grim must use her newfound ability to find out the truth behind her mysterious upbringing.

After turning 18, Grim is eligible to receive a guided trip into an E-rank Gate World to unlock her first boon. Only after slaying enough magical creatures to roll for it, instead of the E-rank ability she's expecting, she gets... Hazel, the rare S rank boon,[FRIENDLY SHADOW]. She's an exact physical duplicate andimmortal. Which would be amazing if Grim wasn't a small, anemic teenage girl with only one arm.

The two of them will need to work together to survive in a world where the system is irreparably broken, the government watches your every move, and blood thirsty monsters come out of portals on the regular. But to find out why someone killed her family and erased her memory, she's going to need to do a lot more than survive.

She's going to need to become a Boon Witch, individuals who use the remnants of the system to raid Gate Worlds for their untold riches. They're the defenders of Eternity City and the quickest way to become powerful... or dead.

It won't be easy to find the secrets she's looking for, but she will stop at nothing to unravel the mysteries behind her unusual upbringing, and why the hell someone named a baby girlGRIM.

Pretty blown away by this story, especially for it being a review swap. I’m seriously impressed. Fives across the board from me.
If you’re checking on this review, I’m just going to reiterate that you should give this a read!!! Now, let’s get into why you should:
Style Score: I liked the writer’s style. It was more terse and punchy, while still being easy to follow. It wasn’t overly flowery and flowed well. Not much else to say, other than I liked the style a lot!
Story Score: The story is really interesting. Two things that really got my brain working were the MC and her unique perk and how she is put into a position VERY early to use it in a special way. The perk fits her so well, and it’s such an interesting fit for a character like Grim. The second thing was this concept of “rolling dice” from gathering shards to get a perk. It’s a cool concept and just puts a bit more flavor into the system that’s being built in the world.
Grammar Score: I tend to listen/read a lot of things through TTS, which often makes grammar mistakes jump out at me. This story had shockingly few grammatical mistakes, as well as avoided using repetitive words or phrases! Well done, TasteOfSmoke!
Character Score: I liked the MC Grim and her companion(?) … err- perk(?)… maybe more? There’s a lot of mystery around Hazel in these first ten chapters, so I’m looking forward to reading more! But more on Grim, the author does a good job of setting up her personality through action rather than describing it. A very great example of “show, don’t tell” is used as we clearly see that Grim has a hard time accepting any form of help. This is highlighted well and often, though it’s done in a realistic way that doesn’t feel like I’m getting hit over the head with it.
I’ll certainly be keeping up with this story. It’s on my follow list now. Give it a read and decide for yourself!

I had this story on my to-read list for a while, waiting for it to hit 10 chapters so I could binge it and see if it was worth it. Boy, was I not disappointed! I flew through all 11 chapters (current number as of writing this review) in about an hour.
Style: The writing is clear and easy to follow, and the author has created a vivid, immersive world. It's an enjoyable and accessible read.
Grammar: I didn’t notice any grammatical errors.
Story: This is where the novel really shines. The first few chapters hooked me right away, and the mystery surrounding both the system and the MC is a refreshing change from typical RoyalRoad novels. I love stories with a clear goal or mystery to solve from the start, and this one delivers that beautifully. The system itself is unique and adds depth to the plot, rather than feeling like a generic feature.
Character: Another strong point. The MC is well-developed, even within these early chapters, and through her perspective, we get a good sense of the world—something not always done well in similar stories, in my opinion. Her boon fits perfectly with her personality, adding layers to her character. Their dynamic feels fresh and entertaining, with both characters having distinct voices that complement each other well.
Overall: I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a LitRPG with a well-written female MC, set in a modern/futuristic world with a dash of mystery.
I will be keeping up with this story going forward.

Strong start, unique shtick, plucky MC.
Decent first five chapters to set the tone, and I'm happy to get here early and see where this leads! Always excited for a gritty story about a kid coming up and kicking ass - I think we can probably expect a good show here so happy writing and reading all
Best of luck and stressless writing TasteofSmoke
