Loved the world building here with themes of colonialism, rebellion, struggle for freedom. The changes that is brought about when the rulers of the planet decide to submit to the invading Terran empire and the way the native way of life crumbled in the macro sense is shown well. Even in the micro level, the effects are evident as how Terran technology is replacing traditional toy store and how the children are incorporating it.
It offers a different perspective from the viewpoint of the grandpa character wherein he views anything that doesn't directly concern him, is not something to fuss over and just do the best they can at what they do. Even if it comes off as defeatist, we can clearly see where he comes from. This is applicable to real life military situations as well. The difficulties faced by enslaved people and the overwhelmed healthcare system is described in a grounded way.
Pacing is good, is brisk and offers satisfying buildup of mystery and intrigue. The action is intense. Vuvu is cute. The supporting characters like Bailan, Sylas and Ok'di, Torylyn.. all get their moments to shine.
The cons would be the dialogue which is often expository when it could be woven as a narrative paragraph. Thoughts and current actions sometimes are both in italics and it takes a while to separate them. The whole story takes place from Divan's POV which limits the story telling. For example, when Divan taunts Torylyn about his inaction, the violent response that elicits reads weird from Divan's POV. I saw some typos, which is a minor nitpick.
Overall I am very excited to see where it goes from here. As rebellion grows more intense.
