Description

The small town of Craftborough was founded in 1718 as a haven where witches could escape persecution.  It became home to the first coven in North America, and established Saufgrove—an all-girls boarding school that specializes in teaching witchcraft.

Olivia Oliversen, a young witch from a prestigious family, had the honor of growing up there.

And she despises it.

The first year of her apprenticeship to Jack Noctis is finished, and her coven has invited her back to give her report. Olivia never would’ve considered going, but one of her friends is missing. Big Jacky says that he’s still alive, but to save him, Olivia will have to do the one thing she’d hate most—swallow her pride and return to the home she swore she’d never go back to.

As her master, Big Jacky has to come, but if Olivia wants the best hope of finding out what’s going on, she’ll also have to ask Emerra Cole for help.

Make that the two things she’d hate most.

What’s not to love here?? I kind of expected an enemies-to-rivals-to-friends arc with Olivia to crop up at some point ever since she was introduced as Emerra’s only peer in Jacky’s house. Instead, I got this, which was so much better! I love how rkgoff lavishes dimension onto just about every character who shows up on stage, so I loved seeing how they handled diving into Olivia as a person without sacrificing or watering down what initially made her stand out.

    Great Story
I am really enjoying this book series and the character development.
I enjoy the mystery and crime solving in a magical setting.
I am looking forward to reading all the other books in this series.
I wonder what Jackie's crew will get up to in the next few books

I'm very much of the opinion that the Noctis series is amazing, and possibly my favorite mystery book series I've read.
That being said, I went into this installment of it with not the highest expectations. The central mystery seemed... mundane, ironically, compared to the the previous two books, and Olivia took less than 5 chapters to get on my nerves(which, I imagine was rather the point of her so far).
Despite this, I soldiered on and boy oh boy am I glad I did.
Blind as a Witch was an excellent book, even if, in my rather vibe-based opinion,  it differed a tad from the first two books, where unraveling the mystery was the goal, not the means, if that makes sense.
Here, the mystery seemed to serve the character interactions and the airing out of dirty laundry, which I found interesting, sometimes wholesome, but overall really intriguing. Olivia is perhaps the most colorful of the Noctis mansions' inhabitants so far, and her interactions and actions in this book show that very well.
Also Emerra's maturity since being pulled out of a coffin really showed in this book, even if she seemed to be more depressed than ever, being stuck with only Big Jacky of all people for emotional support(though that's not really his fault).
Overall, I loved the book more and more as it went on, and I hope we'll meet some of the characters introduced here again in the future.
P.S.: If you are scrolling reviews, stop doing so and read the damn series!

As always, rkgoff really knocks it out of the park with her stories. This one focuses on Olivia, the unfriendly witch of the Noctis mansion, and a mystery involving her past life and family.
Overall, I thought the plot was great. There clues to help piece things together are definitely there, and the surprises and twist are absolutely deducible for readers with a keen eye for details (which is a great quality for any mystery novel!)
Of course, as always, the characters are what I always come back for. Our main gal Emmera is always a joy to read, and it was nice to get to learn more about Olivia after her relatively minimal antagonistic role in the last few books. In addition, all of the new characters are fantastic in their own way. (Olivia's dad is a particular joy that steals the spotlight instantly whenever he shows up.)
Loved this one, and excited as always to read the next.

Starting with "Dead Eyes Open" rkgoff has assembled a nice cast of characters around her main character, Emerra Cole, to maintain this series of (murder) mystery stories. It's not your usual RoyalRoad web serial fare, these stories compare much more to (murder) mysteries from traditional publishing. Each story an episode that can be more or less read on its own although, as a fan, I'd of course recommend to read them all.
At this point, chapter 6, it's too early for me to comment much on the story as it has just gotten started but the writing is top notch. The cast of characters is not only well established and easily recognisable for anyone who read the previous stories in this series but also likeable and proven. I am certain that I'll be well entertained reading this story and even this early I have no objections giving it 4.5 stars. (I only give full 5 star ratings to truly outstanding works and those are, by definition far and few.)

This is a bit of a low point in the Noctis series, I feel (while still being heads and shoulders above most other works in RR), because what is presented as the A plot (the search for Olivia's missing friend) turns out to be just a bare-bones excuse for the characters to be there, and ends up being a sort of sideplot to the author's actual focus, the examining of Olivia's family dynamics, and one with no overlap with it. The investigation ends up taking barely any on-page time, which overall weakened the entire approach. I feel like this novel would've worked much better had the B plot been the only plot or, alternatively, had it been the actual secondary plot to the investigation, with at least a bit of crossover between them.
