- longwindedone1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This review comes after reading the first five chapters of Black Wolf, White Bunny. I apologize for any spoilers.
Story:
In my time on royal road, I have seen very few stories that are so uniquely told. Black Wolf, White Bunny tells the journey (you guessed it) of a white bunny and a powerful black wolf who are forced to cooperate to survive. The world is dominated by a system that compels them to fight or die. Together, they struggle against and eagle and a hunter. Each chapters sees the characters forming a more solid bond. This tale represents an intense LitRPG story from beginning to end.
Style:
I believe the tone of the story would be considered suspenseful. It switches between the perspectives of the bunny and the wolf (in third person). By doing so, we really get a good sense of the various individual's strategies and fears. The writing is good. I really felt pulled into each of the dangerous situations they found themselves in.
Grammar:
I didn't notice any errors in the writing, but I listened to the story using the RR app. I'm usually not the best person to comment on the physical structure of the stories I read. I enjoyed it, and I wasn't taken out of the story by mistakes- That's an A+ in my book.
Characters:
The MCs are the white bunny and the black wolf. The bunny is resourceful and smart. The wolf is strong and empathetic. Together, they make a great team. The system feels a bit like the bad guy in that it forces the characters to fight or die. Other than that, the only characters mentioned in these first few chapters are the eagle and the hunter.
Two parts stand out as my favorites here. The wolf using the "healing kiss" power was really amazing. The other was where the bunny decides to fight the hunter. Just in the first few chapters the characters are evolving before the reader's eyes. Will continue to read- 5/5 - KuraokamiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As my title states, this is an awesome story and one that was totally unexpected. The story is amazingly well written, with little to no errors, and the characters, even though they are not all human, feel incredibly relatable. I can already see the little bunny being my favorite character—she’s this bloodthirsty little fuzzball who brings both humor and a touch of danger to the plot. Her personality adds an extra layer of charm to the story, and I can’t wait to see more of her.
The system within the story is easy enough to understand, yet it teases deeper mysteries that have me hooked. It’s clear the author has crafted a well-thought-out world with rules that make sense while still leaving room for surprises. The way the system operates feels natural, without overloading the reader with too much detail upfront, but there are subtle hints that there’s much more beneath the surface waiting to be revealed. It’s these little mysteries that keep me intrigued and excited for what’s to come.
The plot has a good balance of action, and world-building, and I’m finding myself constantly wanting to know what happens next. The relationships between the characters especially the two main characters are dynamic and I find myself chuckling at their little conversations. This story is definitely not what I expected in a totally grand way cant wait to see where these two go from here especially to see what shenanigans the little rabbit gets up to.
"Black Wolf and White Bunny" is an adventure novel that totally hooked me from the start. Every chapter made my heart pound, and I was on an emotional rollercoaster along with the characters. The story takes place in a dangerous and unpredictable forest, full of deadly predators and brutal survival rules. In this wild setting, the protagonists—a clever but struggling white bunny and a quiet yet kind-hearted black wolf—team up to face all kinds of challenges.
The setting is full of tension and unpredictability. There are cunning predators lurking in the forest, plus a mysterious "system" that seems to control everyone's fate. This system gives them tasks and skills, offering survival opportunities while throwing them into even deeper trouble. The whole "hunt or be hunted" vibe really adds a ton of suspense and urgency, making every moment a battle for survival.
Honestly, at first, I thought the combo of a white bunny and a black wolf was a bit odd. But as the story went on, their chemistry became surprisingly awesome. The white bunny's intelligence and bravery often left me speechless, while the black wolf's protective instincts and quiet loyalty were super heartwarming. Seeing them depend on and help each other really got me in the feels, especially when they faced powerful enemies with this unspoken understanding. In such a harsh world, their bond feels incredibly special.
One scene that I can't forget is when the white bunny fought desperately to escape a hunter's trap, and the black wolf rushed to save her despite the danger. The life-or-death tension in that moment had me literally holding my breath. I could truly feel their fear and determination, which made me realize that survival isn't just about protecting yourself—it's about the perseverance and the bond they share.
The story really nails the theme of "hunt or be hunted." Each character is cons - AbarithRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story is great so far, with tension that keeps you on edge, and a mysterious system watching over our two protagonists.
Style: 4.5/5
The mix of intense action and internal thoughts flows naturally, with the system messages and notifications integrated smoothly, not distracting from the tension. On occasion it may be confusing to know whose perspective it's supposed to be, but otherwise everything stays consistent with the third-person perspective
Story: 5/5
We're instantly thrown into this high-stakes survival, with death at every corner. Watching the bunny fight for her life while being constantly terrified is pretty fun, and her interactions with the wolf is tense but compelling. The mystery of the world, our characters' backstories, and the system doesn't distract from the immediate happenings in the scenes.
Grammar: 5/5
The writing is pretty decent, good balance of description and action. The vocabulary is not super complicated, so it's easy to read.
Characters: 5/5
The characters are what really stand out. The bunny is smart and resourceful, and it’s easy to root for her. The wolf adds a surprising depth to the story, showing hints of a moral struggle that makes him more than just a threat. There are promises of some interesting dynamics between them down the line. - Resigned DilettanteRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am loving this story so far. A very good take on system apocalypse stories from an interesting perspective. Looking forward to more.
Style: There were a couple of moments in which it was slightly confusing whose perspective it was supposed be from as it seemed to go back and forth, but otherwise the style is great and lends itself to establishing the characters and action.
Grammar: No complaints. I may have spotted like one mistake, but it was so minor I don't even remember it now.
Story: A fun time. Killer rabbit with wolf buddy. What's not to love? Definitely looking forward to the end of the tutorial when presumably greater integration between the animal and human spheres occurs. So far it's simple and to the point, which is great for establishing the tensions.
Character: Very good at establishing the rabbit as a thinker by showing the thought processes as she adapts to the new world without her just knowing things she shouldn't. The properties of the status screen being a good example of her being clever but in an animal way. Since I think most humans would assume in that the tactile nature is from manipulation of the nervous system rather than the simpler explanation of tangible is tangible. The wolf is also good, though he isn't as well established yet. Though I have every faith the establishment will happen. - ScoatesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Just started reading this, but it does a lot of things I like. It starts with a cute, powerless bunny who screams “Fuck, fuck, fuck!” while she’s being hunted. While seemingly innocent we also get hints that she’ll do anything to survive.
luckily, she’s befriended by a wolf who adds her to his pack.
Interestingly, the system is unreliable and possibly sadistic. Admittedly, I haven’t read much LitRPG but I like that the system feels like a character and that I don’t trust it.
I think I remember grammatical issues in the first chapter but didn’t really see any in the last chapter I read.
I initially gave a simple review, but came back to the story, so I’m adding comments on each section.
Full points on style because it’s engaging and the two POVs complement each other.
The story is interesting so far and I look forward to seeing the bunny progress past the wolf, as is hinted in the blurb.
The characters are my favorite part. The cute bunny is actually very conniving and vicious, while the wolf is kind and empathetic, though less intelligent in ways. The system being its own character adds intrigue and scores additional points for the story. - Sun In The Middle Of NightRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A good start. An interesting world that I wouldn't want to be isekai into.
The wolf & bunny is always a nice concept to shows contrasts. And how they're all just play things for something higher give the atmosphere more eery.
The MC that being a slave to the system can get boring, and an evil system where the user need to fight it while trying to survive is indeed a good way to play around the litrpg motif. Starting the story with a bunny and wolf duo both sound promising and poetic. Looking forward to see how it play out. System felt like a god that playing with their toys. And that make the story interesting.
Style: Stuffs might get a bit confusing in the first couple chapters. It might be intentionally, but it might make people off before they continue.
Grammar: Nothing to complain.
Story: Promising, but will need to see more on how it is played out. Too much fights for now to have much details on the story of this world.
Character: The wolf's definition of kindness really tells. But it mostly fights for now, so we'll have to wait and see.
A journey awaits for these 2 little fellas. It won't be easy for them. - emmmeeeseRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Honestly, this story is amazing. And, as someone who isn't a huge fan of LitRPG, it hooked me.
First of all, the premise is entirely gripping. I've not read many stories with animal protagonists, and it was interesting combined with the mechanics of a litRPG world.
Grammar/Style: I loved the narration style. There was character voice in each narrator, and the author knew just how much description/internal thought to provide the reader. I do not know how standard the litRPG elements are in the narration, but I found it engaging to read. Fight/action scenes were also treated extremely well.
Character: This is what first stood out to me. This author knows how to create sympathetic characters. I loved how different the bunny and the wolf are to each other, yet compliment each other so well. The bunny is fiercely determined, but I love that this is only subtly hinted at in the beginning of the story. I also love the system, which is a character in my eyes. I love how the system feels like an overwhelming, yet sarcastic foe. Each of these characters are also smart, which is wonderful. They are not stupid for the plot.
Story: I love the 'dog eat dog' sort of world. This may be standard of litRPGs, but I found it to be very engaging. The well-written character narratives also let there be good amounts of tension between the characters vs their world, and the characters vs the system. I also like how, even so early in the story, many moral dilemmas of this world are presented in the internal conflict of the wolf. Overall, the story is extremely solid. - LiarbytradeRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Time to take this from the top.
Style: In terms of narrative style, everything here feels pretty solid with one significant exception: the litrpg boxes are kind of scuffed. It's not too much of an issue when we're dealing with the larger menus, but the smaller updates - like health changes, skill ups and communion messages - don't integrate well with the text. This might be a deal breaker for some fans of the genre. Personally, I can look past it, but I'd feel remiss if I didn't point it out.
Anyway, outside of that one gripe, I actually enjoy it. There's a very Disney-esque vibe here, albeit one that cleaves to the darkest scenes. I almost want to see someone to break out into song. Nothing too operatic, though. Maybe something from a death metal album.
Story: The story has one of those mysterious, in medias res openings that people either love or hate. Me? I love em. I enjoy piecing together the clues to the setting as the author pulls back the curtain. In this case, we have what feels like a recent system apocalypse with a potential side order of transmigration or reincarnation. Our familiar floating screens are both hostile (always fun) and fluctuate somewhere between fantasy and reality as our protagonists deal with the mundane horror of living in literal nature. At this point, it gets a five from me. Whether or not it stays there is going to depend on how things shake out moving forward.
Grammar: I'll be honest, the grammar's a bit rough. So far, the biggest problem seems to be missing words and accidentally switching the subject of one or two sentences. With that being said, the book's still readable, overall. Mostly because I feel like the author actually knows what they're doing. They aren't doing it, right now; however, that seems to have more to do with the time constraints involved in publishing on royalroad than a strict inability. It'll be interesting to see whether things tighten up once we get past the initial rush of chapters - PBJ_TimeRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Yet another unique litRPG setting that should be endorsed more, tbh. It doesn't try to be anything else other than the story of a weak rabbit and a strong wolf helping each other, and it does it so well.
Style: although I didn't like the POV changes despite it the warnings, the prose is still engaging. It highlights a lot of character growth and inner monologue.
Story: the main reason why more should read this. This isn't about a loner hero who becomes too OP yet "humble." Hell, it's not even about about humans. The story sets around a sentient rabbit and wolf who have to rive above the challenges in a litRPG world. The mechanics are pretty solid, so that's a plus.
Grammar: nothing much to say here. I didn't find any glaring mistakes to talk about, which is great.
Characters: the pacing kinda made either of them a little confusing, but they play each other well nicely. As I've said, this isn't a story about humans but animals, making already a step above most litRPGs. The rabbit and wolf really gives a sense of what their strengths and weaknesses could realistically be in many situations.
Overall, why isn't this more popular? Like, seriously.
