- LoeksnokesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A fantastic novella about a hard iron man fighting off the forces of destruction of his world. This is not a coming of age story: the MC is fully realised and confident in his abilities, but pressed against a giant task that would certainly be his undoing on his own steam.
The story is told against a backdrop of on-going war between mankind, darkness/other. The MC is an aging hero, but still in his prime. The whole world is deeply conceived as a backdrop for what could be many stories, even from the MC's referenced past. There is dramatic tension between the benefits of being hard in your given direction, and being flexible and accepting of reality as it is, and this tension pervades (at least for me) much of the tale.
Sometimes the best thing to do is force your view onto the world (so it does not eat you and everyone you love!).
Well worth the read. A complete story, with only eighteen chapters, but with each chapter satisfyingly long. I will remember this story and some thoughts I had reading it for years to come (of course, just on occassion... :).
Style: Dark world, with a lot of tension and the reality throughout that ANYONE can die. A bit like McCarthy's "The Road" in the prevailing feeling in the background, but with a very different MC, who is duty bound, but not to his child.
Story: A short and compelling story set in a world that is endangered from many quaters, including mankind itself. The core threat in this story is very serious indeed, but also just one threat of many. The story is driven forward by the personalities of the various protagonists, who in general do not get along, except by common goal. The story is embedded in a direct larger story, and I really wish I could learn more about that as well. Alas!!
Grammar: Very well edited. One of the best I have read on RR. On par with "A tale of Black and Red".
Character: The characters are very well thought-through. I pipped half a star here though because of two very minor quibbles. Th - KinokawaRoyal Road★★★★ 4.04/5 for me because I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I wanted to know more about the world. The big battle used as a backdrop to the story was a little lacking in the 5Ws.
Also, I really wanted to know what that telegram said...
