Beyond The Game (Abandoned)

Description
Kaine sighed as his foe advanced once more, never letting up, barely giving him time to breathe.
He pressed forward as well, excited and ready, welcoming the bloodshed that was to come.
His short blade, meeting the bestial warrior's bone-made longsword. Their weapons clattering sound into each of their ears when they clashed. Kaine pushed, as did his foe, beginning the contest of strength. A dance which Kaine controlled the steps of.
As their eyes met, both of them weary, but Kaine's expression was resolved...maddened almost.
Whilst his foe's was fear-struck, the creature was terrified down to its core.
As were its comrades which surrounded them, watching, waiting for an opening to have at Kaine themselves.
Seeing many...but they faltered, as the dead had seen the same openings before.
Their battered, broken and still freshly bleeding bodies laying sprawled about their surroundings.
It is just one...
One of them thought in shaken disbelief.
Just...Just one man but he kills so many...smiling even!
Glancing from the dead, and back at Kaine as he slew another.
No...this is no man...
Was its panicked conclusion.
This one's a monster!
As Kaine turned to face it, weapon ready and grinning widely throughout his approach.

- wyavern13Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0premise : good ol trapped in the new vrmmorpg
uniques : Game system, MC is crippled in real life due to some bad shite, though the current iteration of the game is new MC played the game irl years ago, speaking of years ago the world kinda exploded and stuff and a few thousand years have passed (I think thousand definitly hundred),
clechie : you die in game you die for reels!
thats more or less all the real critique. solid writing. great visualazations and a conflicted for a reason other then just "plot" MC.
in other words this is a very good read and i think it will appeal to many. keep up the awsome stories. - TheHuscarlRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I have stopped reading after chapter 9, because i grew a bit tired of the genre. This is a story i might come back to though. Just that this doesn't account for anything after ch9.
Review:
Well it's a "caught in the game" story, with the one locking them in there seemingly not being a developer/owner related to the game. I'll take the more negative parts first, and then the positives.
This story uses character screen system with hp. And i don't enjoy when hp are used in game-like universes (eg. with other stats/character screens, whilst being "the real world"), but i feel it's excusable here since it's supposed to be a game. And also because the author has done it tastefully up till this point (serving more as a backdrop/time-limit in the action scenes than giving every attack a numerical value).
The main character is set up with some kind of unknown traumatic background it seems. This makes him go berserk sometimes and completely stop working at other times. His motivation is explained to have something to do with his sister, and might be linked with his trauma. I do not enjoy this hidden background thing as in this case it seems completely disconnected from the rest of the in-game story and overall feels empty (just my opinion, i might be heavily biased against this type of thing).
Also the MC doesn't seem to have problems slaughtering intelligent humanoids seemingly because of this background (he remarks multiple times how much more intelligent they are than in the last game). At this point the excuse is that the "players" purely sees everyone/thing else as AI, which does not make that much sense to me given that they seemingly accept the words of the one who says they locked them in the game.
I enjoy the story setup with there being an earlier game and knowledge from this gives the MC a slight advantage. Though only based on the beginning, the things this enables the MC to do, are things that seemingly everyone can do. There also hasn't been given a unique class - some total kretinRoyal Road★★★ 3.0Before I start delving deeper into this fiction, let me just write that whatever is written after, this fiction is competently written and even enjoyable. My opinion is it is not bad, it's just another take on the waning popularity of the "trapped in deadly videogame" subgenre of light novels.
Now that's out of the way, let's explain the difference between psychopath and sociopath.
The difference basically boils down to: Psychopath is born, sociopath is made by environment. The reason I'm writing this is because the MC of this novel is badly adjusted sociopath. He was not born one, he was made one by circumstances out of his control, and to protect his psyche, he became desentitized sociopath with delusions and flare for melodrama.
That is the problem of the MC. He is badly adjusted melodramatic sociopatic chyunibiou (or how is the blasted term written) edgelord, who is burdened by his mysterious past and after that by swearing himself to someone...(as of ch10 or 11). Oh, did I also mention that the MC is slightly on the side of being OP? (No, he is not completely OP, but close)
Then we have the plot, it is predictable, but also not bad.
The side characters are archetypical in almost anime like way - the older mature crafter, the comedic relief twins, the strong independent woman....well, you can imagine.
What I have real gripe with is THE SYSTEM. Half of it is there only because it is expected. Because it is a game. It is thought out, but completely unnecessary and only there to be there. Especially the stats. They do not mean anytthing, same with health. And the bonuses? The FIRST bonus the character gets is 25% more to stats? Do you, dear author, realize just how much of a trap have you written yourself? You basically made your MC 25% stronger then equivalent character just because he killed a beast. An easy beast, I might add.
Three stars for bog standard clieched light novel. Pretty good, but far away from excellence.
