This is a rewrite of a story I loved.
The story of "Scientific Sorcery: Beware of Kittens" (the original writing of this story) is what introduced me to this multiverse.
Since then, I've read many more stories by the author, and it's fascinating how they all interconnect.
At the point I stopped reading the original version, it seemed yet mostly untouched by the overarching story, but the rewrite might point to the connection being relatively close. I can't wait!
    EDIT:
    1) It's somehow both a continuation and a rewrite (super fun how);
    2) This time around, things that felt like random luck or revelations have more solid circumstances bringing them about, which I find even more appealing.

I felt compelled to type some words here by someone helping a confused nerd. I often enjoy a good bit of scientific mindset in a world that doesn't follow the known rules of our world! Huzzah! For science!
But, seriously. It's well written, minimal filler, or at least, you'll be lost if you skip paragraphs. Minimal grammar and spelling errors, and fairly intuitive sentence flow. A likely sign of editing before posting, possibly even reading aloud.
I'm stingy with my stars, but here! Have five of them! Humph!

I never read the original story, and I'm sad I missed it, but also super excited to read it now. No more FOMO. This story dives on into the cold depths right away and introduces the world of magic and the conflicts with it. The world-building and studying of the magical world in comparisons to our own is so well done. Nothing is complex, and it teaches you language and how the world fits instead of "Wave some Yaga magic around and poof it works." I enjoy the character Ioan and his approach to observing the world under a magnifying glass to solve his dangerous problems around him. This makes him a 5/5 witch character!
The kitten stormy just showed up, and I'm waiting for that little terror to take over the world (as all cats should).
Style is great, grammar I can't judge or complain on. The story starts fast then switches into world-building for a bit, but I don't have any complaints because Ioan never lost his agency during this and I didn't get bored - so 5/5 story.
To any new readers of this story, avoid the comments to avoid spoilers from the original version.
PS author, thanks for the songs from the Siren!

Maybe read story before looking at reviews, everyone has different opinions and most are just not correct. Just saying.
I like the premise and the mystery. Jarring left brain to right brain switches, hence style points. But fresh use of poems? Full points.
Good use of humor and realistic transfered to fictional scientific knowledge.
    Writing is readable and engaging.
Not enough chapters to waste an entire weekend lazing in bed with my phone.
Peak world building and sense of anticipation for future developments. Full points for potential absolutely thrilling storytelling.
That was all but rr wants a 200 word count like a middle school english paper.
Its a nice beginning even if my reincarnation/amnesia synapses have been shot. I mean, not a single story out there has the mc wake up in the middle of a fiery ruin where his faux family has been murdered and just decide, yeah im living here now.
Now that I think about it, his line of questioning for the witch felt railroaded, like he already knew he wanted to be a witch when he saw her. His questions just too targeted to be natural.
Instead, maybe if his goals of hunkering down and investigating this world had more obvious alignment with witchiness, it would make more sense.

Disclaimer: I beta read some of this fiction ahead of its release.
This is a rewrite of a story the author has already released before, but now with more violence!
The main character is smart and cautious, which causes him to reject becoming a hero but sticking him with becoming a witch instead. This severely limits him from the outset, and he must work to overcome the many issues with this choice right from the start. I’m excited to see who else the main character meets on his journey as they move along.
The magic system is innovative and the encounters are challenging and exciting. The writing is evocative and detailed without getting bogged down in minutia, and the worldbuilding is complex and fascinating. As always with this author, the setting is surreal and steeped in a dark, twisted feeling of unreality that adds to the tension of the story. I would definitely recommend giving this a try, especially if you want to step beyond the routine magic of standard fantasy novels.
On top of all that, you get to see Vitaly's amazing art that he creates for his creative works, which is always amazing. That has always been one of the perks of his stories. I highly recommend the new rewrite of Beware of Kittens, so give it a shot!

And like the title of this review, the setting of this story as described in the synopsis is a bit misleading. And while that's a missed opportunity and disappointing. The story is not.
So few stories are written with the thought and reference that this one is. And no. While an odd reverence for the subject of reference might have led to the idea for this story. Reference was the word I intended. So. Not a typo.
The things we do for arbitrary word counts. I swear.

Very nice writing, interesting story and mythology! Illustrations and lyrics are awesome and bring a lot of spirit to the book! Can't wait when I'll be able to read whole book! A definite reccomendation to everyone who looks for a good book about applying science to magic!

I’m absolutely loving this story so far, currently up to chapter 3.2 and it’s been an engaging, well-paced read from the start. The writing style is clean, polished, and very immersive. I ended up reading all the way through in one sitting. Grammar and spelling are solid throughout, with no noticeable errors, which is always a big plus.
The main character is well-written, consistent, grounded, and not overpowered, with logical motivations that make them feel real. While they do start with a bit of a leg up, it’s balanced in a way that supports the story rather than detracts from it. The world itself feels rich with potential. There’s room for growth, innovation, and exploration, especially since the MC's abilities are tied to a specific locality. That adds a really interesting dynamic to the worldbuilding and opens up possibilities for how the plot might evolve.
One of the standout elements for me is how the story handles magic and science. I really enjoy seeing magic broken down and studied in a rational, almost scientific way. The inclusion of explanations for scientific terms is a nice touch—it makes the story more accessible while also feeding my curiosity. I’m learning new things while being entertained, which is a rare combo.
So far, we’re early enough in the plot that a lot of key details—like the identity of the antagonist are still unknown, but that just adds to the intrigue. The pacing feels just right, with enough happening to stay interesting while leaving room for mystery and development.
As someone familiar with Vitaly's other works, I'm curious how this story will distinguish itself within the shared mega-world he’s building. My hope is that, even if it ends up slower or more contained, it will explore themes that are uniquely its own. Since this is a rewrite, I expect some familiar elements, but I’m looking forward to seeing what new directions it takes.
This is actually the first story I read on Royal Road, and it’s the one that got me hooked on the

A unique story with interesting twists, Combined with Lyrically genius songs that would make a Disney composer green with envy. A must read for anyone looking for a uniquely Scientific Take on fantasy,
so far they’ve been no Major grammatical errors that I’ve picked up on, the pacing is perfectly on point. The artwork that is added in many chapters so far is genuinely beautiful in a very haunting way, And the music itself perfectly fits the atmosphere and setting a truly haunting ambience each song of which so far there were three. They are honestly worth listening to by themselves though obviously they fit into the story perfectly. The LIT – RPG elements are very subdued and minor which is always a plus after reading so many and I love the way the main character actually feels intelligent as opposed to the author simply describing him as intelligent and making everyone else unintelligent in comparison I would Happily recommend this book to anyone who enjoys high fantasy in Gen all those who are looking for something fresh, if you’re a fan of the Harry Dresden series I’m sure you’ll enjoy this. The level of work that is going into the series is truly breathtaking. I’ll be following this Author for years to come And if the quality continues, I’m sure this will be a best seller.

this is a very high quality story with quite a few bonus stuff including music to go along with lyrics within the story and some real world examples of techniques used by the main character.
I do not feel as if there is enough chapters to fully critique any negatives at this point.
