Most of them have become mercenaries with nothing else to lose, working for the various factions that have risen from the world's ashes We follow the Grinning Devil and Khutulun, two Unknowns, in their journey to bring a child, Evelyne, from Europe all the way to Japan. We shall explore a new world where Nations are replaced by Poleis, and Humans by Machine, though some of them have taken a different approach. - AlanstrocityRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Ever since the first chapter, I was hooked. I felt the bleak, dystopian world and those who fight for its scraps in all of its visceral glory, the minuscule details hinting and adding up to create a world full of life. Nothing felt rushed or dragged out within the story. It also was easy to keep track of everything going on. The story deeply dives into each character through their thoughts, slowly sculpting the statue of their person. Every twist that the protagonists go through on their journey to Japan feels natural and brings a new challenge that brings me to the edge of my seat. All in all, it's a marvelous book that leaves me hungry for more.
- EdgyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Truly, this story is as charming as the very devil it portrays.
Rarely have I encountered a story that so thoroughly engages me with a world. The ravaged world that is potrayed in the world is interesting beyond belief, with many intricate details expertly weaved into the narrative. Overall, one will struggle to find a story that can create such a wonderful setting.
As for the style itself, it is certainly unique. Details and events are shown in mysterious manners that makes the reader wonder and read on further. This is perhaps the simplest verdict I can give, it is engaging and interesting. Few authors can boast of such a feat.
The story itself is of a dystopian nature. Mystery and deciet fills the story to the brim and I simply cannot give enough. A world ravaged by war is painted by the words of the author and the quest to bring a girl that is special beyond belief to Japan, across the world, is intriguing, thrilling and exhilerating.
But who do we follow through the story? Well, it is none other than the Grinning Devil, and what a charismatic and unknown bastard he is! Of course, he is far from the only character we meet. Unknowns filled with machinery, in places that hold the very world in thrall, will be met through out the journey. Each of them is different, interesting, and brilliantly written.
Lastly, the grammar is on point. Few, if any, mistakes can be found throughout the text.
In summary, you must read this. Where else could you find a story filled with so many mysteries waiting to be discovered? - SIBRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0When writing a dystopian sci-fi setting the ambientation is one of the most important and vital part. And that of "Behind Each smile" is so captivating that you will not be able to stop theorizing to put in place every little information every little information that is wisely given by author.
The world is so fascinating and the desire to discover every little detail of the alternative history created will immerse you in a paralle future that, on one hand will leave readers speechless for its brutality; on the other it will surpirese you with small moments of sweetness that will hardly fail to move you.
The characters are so well written that you will start to get attached to them only after a couple of chapters. Everyone has his motivation and his backstory that will advance the plot in a way that always feel natural, without smudging.
I can't reccomend enough this story, so, please at least give it a try. You will not regret it. - casualnpcRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a very entertaining story for lovers of the distopian/sci-fi genre. I read it all in one go to the ninth chapter, and although I'm a person who loses focus and attention very easily, this story kept me interested for the entire length of it. Many deep, enigmatic and different characters are nicely introduced, and the shifting point of view really helps with keeping in track with the plot, names, events and places. Also, the author keeps you curious about every twist and new details about his characters, and I think that's the best part of it.
- LurkingChaosRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Story is understandable enough as long as you read and pay enough attention that long and lengthy info dumps aren't necessary.
The story does Jump POV quite a lot, that it gives insight on other characters and motivations.
Grammar is servicable enough, the descriptions could use some work though.
Character score: the main Mc is interesting enough just hope he doesn't turn into a smart ass that can solve every problem because he's so smart and starts being a stu. Other main cast could use some development though.
