- Blah64Royal Road★★★★ 4.0I like the setting and the setup. Feels like a well written 'coming of age' story to me.
MC was an orphan, adopted by nobility in a multi solar system empire. Trains most of his life to be in the military, but upon his age of majority, he is instead declared a ruler of a planet. Which he does not want.
Unfortunately, I have grown past my amenability towards coming of age stories. I just have no patience for whiny kids discovering themselves anymore. Mayhaps I will return in the future when I can speed read through these early chapters and get a slightly more 'self-actualized' character. At least one that whines less and thinks before acting hopefully. - jadecriminalRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5So I'd have to say this has potential but the setup makes it difficult to like this kid and thus invest further time into finding out where this goes.
And he is a kid. "Age of majority" aside he has apparently been ignoring everything other than military training, has no idea how to act in society and little information outside of his immediate interest of training to be a famous soldier and general.
I am also calling him a kid because he also seems to have limited capacity of for thinking beyond the immediate. Basically acting like a teenager, impulsive and inconsiderate.
The setting also has potential but I see is an emperor playing chess without considering any of them as people or just plain setting up a patsy.
Oh I'm sure there's some deeper meaning to the whole orphan adopted thing. Maybe a cousin or a secret son but meh.
Anyhow, it's decently written but has no hook or idea to keep me invested and the protagonist is pushing it way back down.
