Balderk's Quest

Description
Balderk Ungart, a dwarven deserter, has only one goal in mind, to stop hundreds of dwarven soldiers from being sacrificed as part of a plan to finally wipe out the elves. He doesn’t think he’ll actually be able to save them, but when he meets and teams up with our heroes from the previous book, Briareth Herbalar and Faladel Mithrandir, suddenly his odds of success get a lot higher. To succeed, the group must find the secret behind the beginning of the war and make peace to ensure the dwarves’ ultimate weapon is never unleashed.
Going from being just another dwarven soldier on the battlefield to adventuring with elves and deftly navigating the dangerous, caltrop-ridden halls of dwarven politics won’t be easy for Balderk. But that won’t stop him from trying!
(This story is the second in it's series, the first can be found for free on RRhere! Youdo nothave to read the first book to understand the second. However, I would still suggest reading the first book as it will give insight into the characters personalities and the worldbuilding).

Details:
I read mostly to relax after a hard day. I like to be transported to a different world than my own, with troubles and challenges entirely unrelated to my own life. I enjoy vivid fantastical worlds and I especially love it when a story makes me laugh and doesn't take itself too seriously. This world and series with it's unique settings and quirky, fun characters definitely hits that spot for me.
First thing to know is that this is a second book in a series, so if you haven't read the first book (The Journey), I would recommend starting there. There are too many fun characters and unique settings from the first book that I wouldn't have wanted to miss, and it gives some deeper insight into the backstory of some of the characters that are the main focal point of this story. (Briareth and Faladel,. I'm looking at you!)
That being said, this story can be understood on it's own. It doesn't assume a lot of prior knowledge, even while building on earlier adventures and worldbiilding. Stylistically, I find this is done very naturally without requiring lots of exposition to bring a reader who hasn't read the first book up to speed. It just fits into the story and banter without being repetitive to those who have read the earlier book.
The setting is a fantasy setting with elves and dwarves that have been in a generations long war. Even though there's a war involved, it is not a dark and dreary story. These aren't your typical elves and dwarves, and the main characters from both sides help to keep the story light and engaging. The banter is fun, the characters are three dimensional and you really start caring about them as the book goes on.
Story wise, there have been some really good twists that I did NOT see coming. As I get closer to the climax in the book, I find myself wanting the author to write faste
