Artificial Selection: A Near Future Thought Experiment

Description

Only Act 1 is complete. This is a story I worked on almost a decade ago. I may continue writing this some day.

Michael Livingstone is a literal intellectual prodigy born at an unfortunate time when artificial intelligence has replaced the human workforce, with the only exceptions of art, humanities, and AI development industries. Trust is deteriorating in society with the increasing frequencies of assaults, deception, and terrorism by and against the globalized national government. Michael always relies on his intellectual talent with space and perception along with some of his dauntless risk-taking spirit to escape danger in this society.  However, Michael soon finds out that this situation involves way more players, variables, and conflicts of interests than he could calculate. This situation is so much more complex than a protest against unemployment, in fact it is a life-and-death matter -- the survival of humanity's civilization.

This story is like a Russian doll. Chapter 1 is the innermost doll, and each chapter takes the readers to an outward journey.
The story started off with one character in one small setting, but as the chapters move on, readers are soon exposed to a more macro view of the political, economic, and social constructions of the world. The more recent updates from this author (comparing to the writing ten months ago) seem to be a lot more complex. Although this story is sci-fi, the author posed many sociological questions. The newer chapters also began to illustrate the different sides of the debate on how our society should cope with technology.

I don't often read science fiction or dystopian stories online, which means I do not possess any benchmark with which to compare this novel. However, this has been one of my favourite online books to read for quite some time now. The characters are complex and go through a lot of development and the story itself is intriguing. I recommend this to anyone who is a sucker for dystopian worlds and science fiction.
