Description
What if your mind held the key to toppling an empire?
Darius Kallan’s life is as unremarkable as they come on the Empire’s frontier—a low-level technician fixing outdated ships for too little pay, scraping by with cheap augments and cheaper meals. Sure, he’s got opinions about the regime that looms over every aspect of life, but he’s long since learned to keep his head down and stick to what he knows: repairing, surviving, and the occasional drink to take the edge off.
But when a sleek Imperial warship docks for emergency repairs, Darius stumbles into something far beyond malfunctioning systems. A rogue AI, embedded in a swarm of self-repairing nanites, chooses him as its host—and its unwitting accomplice. Now, with the Empire’s forces closing in and his life upended by cryptic warnings and uneasy new alliances, Darius must untangle a web of secrets buried deep within the Empire’s tech.
Forced into the crosshairs of a regime he’s spent his life trying to avoid, Darius has a choice: uncover the truth and fight for something bigger than himself – or stay in the shadows and hope the Empire doesn’t notice what’s hiding under his skin.

- BoelloRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A Truelly incredible story. The characters and their interactions seem sensible and realistic. The setting gives off a genuine sci-fi feel. The plot itself is compelling and knows when to relax and when to increase tension. I enjoy the portrayal of the Empire, as you see the problems that it causes without be one-sidedly denounced as absolutely evil. The small descriptive additions, such as the doors sliding open, help give off that futuristic vibe.
- CrystalionRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A great Sci-Fi novel with future potential. The book ended at a very satisfying point but leaves so many unanswered questions. I can only hope the author returns with a continuation – it certainly deserves it!
What was perhaps most impressive was the fact that the author understands nuance. The Empire for all its ills, protects and supports trillions of humans from invasion and enslavement. The Freeholders are not all good and are exploitative and engaged in a useless revolt for the most part. This nuance sets the novel apart from most books on this platform which are the standard good vs evil.
There are very few issues with grammar. The language is sufficiently complex but not needlessly so and there is overall reasonable character development. This is probably where there is more to build on most.
I hope there is a next book as it is certainly a gripping and novel work. We are missing out on wider galactic politics. For example, if this is an Empire who is ultimately in control? Is their nobility? How are these people so unfamiliar with AI? There is potential in any future novel.
Transferring the setting off planet now leaves so much choice in terms of direction - GelomaineRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story moves well and balances suspense with substance. It's evident the author spent his/her time in the research behind the characters, their backgrounds and various items throughout the plot. This, along with a few plot twists, brings it to life and makes it hard to put down. Would recommend.
- HikingmumRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Artificial Advantage hooks you in from the first chapter. This is an easy read that has enough action to keep you looking forward to each chapter. In some ways it's a slow burn but in a good way – the pacing doesn't feel forced. Excellent character development & hints that there are many twists & turns to come.
Darius is a likeable character, an easygoing, relatable guy - it will be interesting to see if his experiences harden him or bring out the best in him – at this point it feels as though it could go either way. Many of the supporting characters are just as interesting as the protagonist – Agent Falk for example – is he a goodie or a baddie? And the same with Lieutenant Thalina – it will be very interesting to see where her character ends up. And I suspect that Darius' friend Finn will re-emerge soon & there's clearly more to him than meets the eye too. I don't want to give an spoilers away with Echo other than to wonder whether there'll be a happy ending there.
It's great to have a plot that it's not too predictable but really keeps you guessing & wanting to read more. It's a refreshing take on the Sci-fi theme & will appeal to lovers of this genre. - Aetherchasm ExplorerRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The writing in Artificial Advantage is sharp and engaging, with vivid descriptions that draw you into Darius’s world. The mix of humor and grit in the opening chapter sets the tone perfectly, showing his struggles under an oppressive regime. Lines like "the sharp clang of metal echoed through the cell as a baton rattled against the bars" pull you into the scene. That said, some parts linger too long on internal thoughts, which can slow down the pacing. A bit more focus on action over reflection would keep things moving smoothly.
The plot hooks you early with its mix of dystopian hardship and sci-fi mystery. Darius’s ordinary problems—fines, faulty augmentations—quickly spiral into something bigger with the introduction of the nanite entity. The pacing works well overall, though some sections, like the exploration of the Imperial warship, feel a bit drawn out. Tightening these scenes would heighten the tension. The blend of personal stakes and larger intrigue keeps you turning the pages.
The story is cleanly written with no noticeable grammar issues. Sentences flow well, and the dialogue feels natural and clear. It’s polished and easy to read.
Darius is a strong lead—funny, flawed, and relatable. His frustrations with the Empire and his day-to-day struggles make him easy to root for. Finn and Lyra add good contrast to his character, but their arcs could use more depth. Lyra’s ties to the Empire are especially interesting, and exploring her perspective more would strengthen the story’s emotional impact.
Artificial Advantage is a gripping sci-fi story with a relatable protagonist, sharp writing, and an intriguing world. The themes of oppression and survival, paired with Darius’s wit, make it a standout. With a bit more focus on pacing and character depth, it could shine even brighter. A must-read for fans of cyberpunk and character-driven sci-fi!
