Ardent Tears (Rewrite)

Description
On the verge of Awakening, Rowan is taken from her family by slavers intent on forging her into a weapon. Why? She doesn't know. She doesn't care. All that matters is freedom, vengeance, and reunion.
In this world of harmony and dissonance, where Resonance and emotions reign supreme, Rowan must learn what it means to be an Ardent before it's too late. She must find unity and purpose. She must not break. She cannot do it alone.
Who will be there for her?
This is a completely revamped and revised version of the original Ardent Tears that I have been working on for the past year and a half or so. I have significantly built upon the original and reworked many of its weaker elements to create what I believe to be a massively improved telling of the story.

- ktemperanceRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This was an awesome tale from start to finish! It kept me interested with every chapter, and I was glad to see characters bloom as the story progressed. This was a nice read to settle down with at the end of the day and just enjoy to its fullest extent for me. I came across Ren's kickstarter for the book and I'm so glad I did! I'm happy for the author to be able to explore more with their characters, especially with the narration and voiceover in mind. I think it'll add some fun to the flavor of this tale, and show personality that's there in the text. Nowadays, having stories like this is both a treat and so very necessary to have! You can connect to the characters, experience their experiences, and relate to them in your own way. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for future tales.
Overall score: 5/5 - Just a great tale to pick up and read through. Highly recommend
Style score: 4/5 - I think the style was perfectly fine! I think maybe changing the prose up somehow could have added that extra boost
Grammar score: 4/5 - Reads just fine! Maybe wording some sentences better could've helped
Story score: 5/5 - Amazing
Character score: 5/5 - I enjoyed it most for this! - CaberReadsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The author has done an incredible job weaving an emotional experience for her readers and it is clear that she has improved a great deal from the original release. Not only is the story more well rounded now, but the new content really adds to the emotional weight of the narrative.
Much like with the original, all the major characters are extremely well realised, especially when it comes to relationships and emotional depth. Each time I read the story, I fall deeper in love with these characters (the non-evil ones that is), and my heart bleeds for them.
The grammar and spelling is also phenomenal for the most part, with only the occasional error or less proper phrasing and none of them jumped out at me as I was reading.
Next point I want to cover in this review is style, as it is the only point I've not given a perfect rating. The reason for this is twofold. Reason one is that there are a few stylistic leftovers from the original that aren't quite up to par with the rest of the rewrite, though I feel these leftovers are few and far between. The second reason is one that is probably more pertinent to readers on this site in that it is clear that the Ardent Tears rewrite was written as a novel first, and web serial second. Whilst this isn't an issue for me, and I believe it still works brilliantly as a web serial, I understand this might not be the case for everyone.
Before I conclude, I also want to make it clear that whilst Ardent Tears is not grimdark in nature, it does get very dark at times and the way in which the author explores the emotional ramifications of those darker elements can make for a difficult, perhaps even visceral reading experience. As such, I recommend caution to anyone that struggles with trauma, especially trauma in adolescence. If you can read through the darkness, however, you will find the promise of light.
And now to end on a lighter note. This has been an incredible return for Ardent Tears and I can see it being one of the greats. - D. FotheringhamRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Up front: I was one of her alpha readers. So I know a little more than has been pubished yet. It's an awesome read, with a well developed world and main characters.
I am deeply looking forward to seeing how it grows, and know she will be putting out new chapters much better than I do!
This is one to watch. - LonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Since the first chapter we readers can see how much time and thought was spent in the lore of the world and that makes us curious in how it works and makes us read more. Since the MC knows most of the basics and would not go into monologues about how people grow stronger or similar, putting such explanations could end up being forced, learning with mc makes things much more smooth.
The characters are so good, you can see that they have depth, for example Mc's family have so much lore from it, but we readers have almost no clue of what
are the ins and outs of her family merely because she is a child and aren't in the know of the lore of her family and the deeds it may have done in the past.
And then we come into the story, as the warnings say, there are traumatic events that happen in the story so it may not be for everyone even though I recommend it for everyone. But before that lets talk about the start, mc acts like a child because well, she is a child and as a child she is pretty direct in things she avoid because she don't understand and may scare her or children things happens such as bullying because children imitate their parents or other things you expect from kids.
And for the trauma, TW beyond here(no spoiler from the story):
After reading most of these chapters, and wandering in these themes and thoughts of trauma. I reached the conclusion that traumatic events, calamity, etc. are quite similar to a strike by lightning when we have a clear blue sky. No one expects it, no one sees it coming but it isn't rare and it may happen.
Minor spoilers for more in depth what happens in the story but not entering details of how it happen:
Right before the chapter where trauma happens and lightning strikes while the sky is clear our mc was having nightmares and did not have a happy time with her loved ones, she was suffering and blaming herself for a thing that happened.
She didn't have time to spend with who she loved without remembering and thinking about the bad thi - Magius SwiftscaleRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There's something to be said about finding a random story and just diving into it without even considering whether it's my particular favorite genre. As a disclaimer, I never read the original version, so I can't speak to the improvements from the original, but what I have read is a grossly underappreciated gem.
Rowan is possibly one of my favorite characters I've read in a while. Ardents wear their hearts out on their sleeves, so to speak, and despite her relative small stature, she's got a bigger heart than most. It also dovetails into the premise that emotions power magic in this world--utilizing them without being overwhelmed by them is the key to her success, and perhaps her only weakness is the social scene, owing in part to the tragic circumstances that led to the separation from her family, and a path to new friends and close ones. Some of the embedded lore feels fresh and new, and I want to know so much more about this world.
The story is far from done, but the path of her young adolescence, and her friends persevering through impossible circumstances. At this point I don't have a good guess where it's going next, except the Good lords are going to have a bad time in the near future.
The characters feel fully fleshed out, and I love the internal dialogue that is frequented. I think there were one or two places where I was like 'huh?' where I wasn't sure what was going on, as the whirl of emotions is used to frame what actually happens. It's a minor bug and if I re-read it, it might make more sense.
The grammar is also well thought out, and I might speed read a little and miss a few things others wouldn't at a leisure pace, nothing broke my immersion into the story. Except maybe dinnertime, XD. The descriptors give it a punchy, well thought out world, and I feel like its only scratched the surface. (I really want to see more concept art to see if it matches my internal depiction!)
Overall, I like where this is headed, and I can't wait to read the forthcoming - Mikeyld1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Amazing well written book that contains catgirls what more could you want. its a good choice for anyone who likes quality stories with strong emotionally charged characters. Rowan especially is one of the better main characters ive seen in a good while with the way she interacts with the rest of the cast.
- RyplinnRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a tale of love and loss, joy and pain, warmth and grief. It is a story of bonds forged in the depths of torment, and of found and lost family. It is delightful and harrowing, and will test your resolve just as it tests the resolve of its own characters.
Not for the faint of heart, but the rewards are great.
Also, consenting, communicated polyamory! Always nice to see. - kaldigoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This book is a thrilling blend of action, adventure, romance, and mystery. The author creates a rich and immersive world with vivid descriptions and intricate details. The magic system is well-developed and original. The characters are complex and realistic, each with their own personality, backstory, and motivation. The plot is fast-paced and engaging, with twists and turns that keep the reader hooked until the end.
It is the first book in a planned series, and it sets up an intriguing premise for the sequel. The author has a talent for storytelling and a knack for creating memorable characters. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a captivating and immersive story. - AlphaDataRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a fantasy story with compelling characters, 100% unique world building, and an adventure plotline that I've never seen before. If you're here for fun and tragedy, there's plenty of that. I'm here for the character development.
There's an inclusion of mental health that's central to understanding different characters, including the main one, and their actions. It's great to finally see characters that have difficulties, but aren't defined by them. At the same time, it never overshadows the adventure if you're just here for a great plotline.
What I really like is that the characters actually change over time. We're introduced to a young protagonist, their family, friends, and a setting, and like with many classic adventure stories it's all changed by a pivotal moment. Unlike many stories, it's clear to see how this affects different characters in understandable ways. They fall, rise, or change to meet the challenges in front of them. I look forward in seeing how the characters continue to change as they achieve their goals and make new ones.
Maybe it's because I'm an American, and the writer is not, but there were various sentences that seemed overly long. Word choice and grammar was a little off at times. Otherwise, the writing was great. - kelemitRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall: The writing and story is strong and well done, including the grammar, etc. I would say that it isn't exactly my cup of tea, simply because I'm very much action oriented. Delving into emotions or navel gazing without resolution is anathema to me, so I don't like reading about it, either. I THINK too much (and have been often described in this way as well) even if i do also consider my thoughts and feelings, it's to the purpose of accomplishing a task, not to simply feel.
That said, this is a PERSONAL thing, not a reflection on the story. Thus if the topic of the story is to your taste, you will likely love it!
Style:
well done, but incredibly detailed and labors in the emotion... so, as I said, if you like the emotional aspect, this story will be for you. I couldn't in good conscience dock it lots of stars simply because I personally don't like it. It is WELL done and explores emotions well. I did dock it 1/2 a star not because it wasn't done well but because it is, to my taste, belabored.
Story:
seems like a good one, but as I've only just started, hard to give much to this. There is depth and foreshadowing of a deep history and story, however. And, as the story focuses on emotions and the exploration thereof, it does it well. That said, the PURPOSE of the story is to explore emotions, so... it's going to spend a LOT of time doing that yet fails to really show that / describe that well or adequately enough to the reader at the beginning. (And to be honest, I'm not sure HOW The author could 'meta' it to explain this to the reader so the reader could understand the basic purpose / thrust of the story. Without it, the first few chapters DRAG and feel rather pointless because what does all this matter to the STORY ... unless, of course, you are trying to show where the MC got their grounding in power... much like the 'training' arc in typical adventure story. But it's not revealed that emotions are powerfully important and drive power, so... (And I only know th
