Perfect..this made me survive my duties in the COVID-19 ward. The story made me forget for a while the horrors of the pandemic. Thanks for the story - EricBurnettRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've read a lot of progression fantasy, and Ar'Kendrithyst is amongst the best I've ever encountered. Despite the many-books-long story, the plot and worldbuilding hangs tightly together throughout. Characters are deep and rich, each with their own backstory, and desires and progression. The magic system is powerful and interesting — a mix of soft and hard magic, with a lot of layers and details to sink your teeth into. And it's interesting!
I won't get into detail, but beyond the magic and fantastical worlds, there's a second level of the book exploring different types of people: how to get along (or not) along divides of sex and gender and species and backer and more. This was very present throughout the book, but not too heavy handed: mostly just a collection of a wide variety of people, all just trying to be themselves. And where there was intolerance, it was usually on the made up fantasy lines: issues between species, or Shades vs people, etc. I found it all both progressive and refreshing.
Overall, I loved it. Read start to finish, without getting bored or burned out. A+, would read again — though probably not right away, that there is an investment. - HimawariMariRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've read a lot of stories and would be books here on RR and I do mean A LOT. Not many books show this much well thought out personalities and plots. The main character is horribly overpowered, but he doesn't feel that way. Somehow the author manages to make Erick believably scared, intent to improve and still himself after all he's been through even though he has grown and accepted things that at first it seemed he never would. I'm looking forward to book 3 and I hope you can keep this up.
- NyawulRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I wrote a review before about this story, but I think it deserves a revise. Ill start it off with a claim that I truly believe. This is the best story I have ever read.
I cant speak to the quality of the theory, or the grammar, or the pacing. But I can speak to the characters and the emotions I got from this. The story just ended and I feel as if a journey I was along for nearly a year with, resolved. Honestly I cried a bit at the end, not gonna lie.
The characters are, insanely well written. You get the feeling that theyre distinct, individual entities. It gets rough and hard to read in some spots sure, but I ultimately stuck through and was rewarded. Ive only gotten a sense of wonder and amazement this large when looking up at the night sky before.
Thank you Arcs, you've left a legacy I will remember. - RongSpeltWrongRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story starts as a pretty good isekai with a unique perspective from an older social worker in the beginning. By the end, the story has undergone 3 paradigm shifts and gone in an amazing direction you could never have perdicted. There are points where the pacing slows but right before it becomes too much you're thrown back into it. I would highly reccomend, it's worth the investment.
- robtheorbRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I loved reading this webnovel. Coming in so late to the story, I've had so many days of genuinely joyous reading recently that my myopic eyes are truly tired.
Sorry, couldn't help myself !
It puts me in mind of slouching in a comfy chair in a dark, cozy room with a low fire burning in the heart and an expert storyteller sitting opposite, telling me of Erick's adventures in a strange world. There is Magic & mystery, dragons & danger, but mostly it's a 'ripping yarn' about a Dad finding his own way in a strange new land.
It's a wonderful story. It's well written, well edited, well paced, and isn't afraid to let the importance of mundanity take centre stage every once in a while.
It is very, very, good. - LOLsuitRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Deep archive! World building with 9+ different cultures. Unique magic systems. Periodic level or skill ups. Deep, start of the universe, backstory, that matters.
The MC and his daughter get isekaied to a fantasy world. He goes the route of mage, and she goes the route of fighter, in monster forms. They make freinds and get allies along the way. Dragons, shades, and monsters aplenty. Metal people, big beautiful people, humans, and war between angels & demons (mostly their proxies).
And the MC changes from pacifist to what do I need to do now for future peace. Its a journey. Do you give the other side a chance to talk first? How responsible are you for the loss of life if you didn't go for a pre-emptive strike?
But I keep learning more about the world, its history, and magic.
Some slight, off screen, sex. - baelrathRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5MC's get sucked into fantasy political emotional manipulation hell.
Out of this world worldbuilding (he he). Its so deep its a tab depressing. Heavy on the mental pondering of mortality and ethics etc.
Main MC is gifted with the mana, loves to make spells that break the world. And then the world punishes him for it. So many established powers in place that have been checked by others that when he shows up to try to improve things, he's shut down because that would upset the balance. It can get overwhelming. Thankfully there is tons of material here. So you can usually tell that whatever depressing arc you're in atm it will get better.
System is a neat set up as its maintained and updated actively by population and those that power it.
Plot gets super heavy at many points. Emotionally heavy.
Characters are so flawed and juicy, you know them. - DrAltRoyal Road★★★ 3.0A feel-good fiction with petty, emotional gods (world insertion from Earth to fantasy) that follows a Dad and his daughter. Daughter is super-gung-ho and goes running into danger, walking between courageous and stupid. The father is a vacillating wimp who wants world peace and listens to anyone. He also spreads dangerous Earth knowledge despite repeatedly promising not to.
Story is well written and likable with unique magic, except the main character who can't make a decision. 'Dad' wants everyone to live in harmony, but if a sentient with intelligence has a logical argument about ANYTHING, he agrees. That mean's he's used as a pawn by many powers in the world and never internalizes it because it keeps happening.
I had this on my favorites once, and I still think the Jane side stories are excellent. However the Dad's continuous hand wringing combined with what he actually does have left me disliking the story, and I can't recommend. I did enjoy parts of it. The opening few chapters were excellent. Perspective characters making ill-considered non-rational decisions over and over eventually lowered my opinion. Found a lot to like and a lot to dislike, so overall settled on three stars. If you don't mind non-rational characters the story does have a well done magic framework with a developed multi-sentient fantasy world. - SunWukongRoyal Road★ 0.5The MC is incredibly naive and just uses plot armor to get his way through every conflict. He also willingly allows himself to be pushed around by everyone and everything. He creates world-changing spells, and doesn't get mad when the gods steal the spell from him and ban him from using the spell that HE LITERALLY CREATED. They then pass off his spell as their own "divine magic" to their worshippers. This happens multiple times (though he only gets banned from using his spell the first time).
