An Outcast in Another World (Subtitle: Is 'Insanity' a racial trait?) is a well-written LITRPG following Rob, a human transported to a fantasy world. This world has stats and classes and levels, and has utterly murdered all of mankind not long ago. Complete genocidal level extinction.
Rob has to start at the very beginning: level 1. He's lost in a forest, beset by monsters, beset by infected monsters, and hunted by elves. I could go on, but you should really just read this for yourself. I planned to read the first ten chapters and just could stop.
PROs: Well written. Strongly sympathetic character Great scene-setting, world-building, dialogue, and characterization. It's very, very easy to get immersed in this story. Very much a weak to strong progression novel - with a catch. A very good catch, that adds multiple complexities to the storyline.
CONs: Some undeclared random POV shifts in chapters, and some minor voice concerns - nothing that I haven't seen in published novels available on Amazon. In fact, those two things are a lot less egregious than the errors I've seen multiple KU books be guilty of.
This novel jumped to the top of the trending list the moment it was able to do so--that should tell you something. It should tell you it's worth reading and checking out. Highly recommended. But don't take my word for it, read for yourself. - RegalariusRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really like the story so far. It's another take on story development that does not feel like generic wish fulfillment. The characters are great and feel like real persons. The charcter progression is belivable and it feels like they are achieving that by their own merit and not by the author playing favorite with their character.
Overall great Story 10/5 would recommend. - SMERSMERRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Man this series is too good 😭 so worth it. Noteworthy elements are the stellar worldbuilding, insane attention-to-detail, great authorial voice, and the lovable, enjoyable protagonist. Let me not forget to mention that this story got me onto RoyalRoad in the first place; made making an account finally worth it
- Salad CannibalRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0When a guy gets dragged into another world and suffers so bad, he becomes the strongest out of pure spite.
This is excellent. All of the characters have really interesting personalities and interact very well together, while the world being constantly just pure chaos and danger makes all the decisions so much more impactful. The power system is simple and serves the character progression really well, the humour is constantly funny and the serious scenes manage to keep their gravity while showing how deranged the protagonist is.
Every single part of the story is delightful with an incredibly climatic finish.
Don't be turned back by the fact it starts like a boring litRPG like I almost was, it's much more than that.
Edit (updating my review for the end of the story): Yep! Still great until the very end! - SansvoidRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is great. It's funny, it's developing well, I hope it will continue to be funny and develop well.
I'm looking forward to more humor.
All these tropes have been done before, but this is a well done version of them, so far.
I like the MC's self depricating sense of humor. - Shu PuerhRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Introduction
This book has quickly become one of my favorites in record time, the writing style is fantastic, grammar is perfect (though that isn't unexpected), the characterization is good, especially for the main character, Rob, and the story is fascinating.
The Style
This book excels at what it does, managing to provide a convincing and enthralling narrative, even when just talking about how the main character suffers through poisonous berries. The way the author manages to make every moment shine with personality and expressiveness is truly amazing, and I would say has the potential to turn this story into something one should not pass up, even if one is unaccustomed to LitRPGs or even if one dislikes them.
The Story
While the style is fantastic, the story manages to be even better. It manages to perfectly balance the traditional LitRPG feel of stat management with a less-used narrative of Rob managing to deal with the psychological problems of various buffs in the style of 'Gamer's Mind'.
Rob is dropped into another world, as people who commonly read LitRPGs are likely accustomed to, but that alone is significant, as the act of him being stolen from his world and dropped into the new one wasn't by choice, and in fact causes two separate conflicts, for him, wanting to know if his friend which he saved by being taken in his place is okay, and for the other species, for a reason that leads into spoiler territories.
The Characters
Even if you were not convinced by the last two reasons, this is where I have to implore you, please read this book, you shall not regret it. The characterization often makes or breaks a book, and I can say that this book manages to make the characters act perfectly. It's fantastic, and not something I expected to see. 10/10. Each character has their own motivations and manages to act following how they should.
In Conclusion
Not much more to say about this, as what needs to be said has already been said. Read this book, you won't regret it - nugito_bambinoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Liked it so much I jumped to Spacebattle just to catch up to current.
Summary: Upbeat MC in a rather distraught world.
Read if you prefer:
- non-OP MC's creating a more realistic experience
- humor over 'heavy math' litRPG's
- dialogue and characterization over extensive world-building (note there is world-building but it's not a focal point)
For the author from a non-writer's perspective:
- love the staccato-like writing style and how you keep the writing tight. Makes it extremely engaging
- 'leveling high' is a fun concept but I'm confused on if (and why) it's human-specific. Unless I missed some expo, it seems like the idea should partially impact all races given the univerality of the 'drug' and the addiction themes. I have theories (mostly 'fast learner') but none of them jive with a full all-or-nothing application to a race - Benjamin ArcioniRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Great story, great characters, great integration of litrpg stats without making them overwhelming. Overall an excellent read. Got the book on Kindle Unlimited and ripped through it in a day.
The story is exciting, well paced, and emotionally touching at times. Definitely worth adding to your follow list.
The story is about the MC being sucked into another world through a portal after shoving his friend out of the way and saving him from the same fate. He is then trapped in another world, an outcast in a world where all the humans are dead (for story reasons) and he has to deal with the intense hatred of pretty much everyone he will ever meet... Classic weak to strong with clear cheat skills that come with drawbacks, and well balanced strength progression. No overpowered MC shenanigans, all victories are earned with blood.
The story has a system overlay with stats, skills, talents etc that advance in fun ways. Big bads, political intrigue, overarching plots, foreshadowing galore. Lots to look forward to and I hope the story goes on well past where I have read up to! (which is the first published book so the first 38 chapters I think). - Davros333Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Well written, great balance of action and character development. Humorous without being a farce.
Honestly really enjoying this a lot. There is lots of lore to be revealed, a relatable maini character, and possible love interests as waiting to be explored. I found the story on Reddit but I am glad I checked out this page so I can get my fix faster. - Dennis WestRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0other mcs on this site dont make a lick of sense and are only intrested in gaining levels by any means necessary so its nice to see a MC refuse to do certant things even if it means losing out on levels. plus its clear to me the the author put alot of work into his system because all the numbers make sense
