- Sanguine RayzelRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Flamebeard has so far written two exquisitely enjoyable stories for this site and its readers and to expect anything less now is folly.
Im liking what little we have so far; little to no noticeable errors in spelling or grammar.
If you've ever wished for a story detailing every aspect of the system and maths behind it, this is your story. - aVerySmallEggRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Ok so, bear with me. There are stories that are power fantasies - the op mc who can annihilate whatever obstacles are in their way. Sometimes the mc starts out not op, and leveling gets them there - that's the role of progression in the power fantasy, as a tool to reach the "power" state.
This is not that story.
This is a story where the progression itself is the fantasy. The reader doesn't vicariously experience power, the reader vicariously experiences progression itself. Numbers go up, yes, but also specific enemies becoming slowly easier to kill, specific actions becoming slowly faster to undertake, and more and more items available to craft and use. The key here is that while the MC progresses, the system also progresses - whenever the MC reaches the "height" of potential, they get an update that releases new heights. And the point is not to gain enough power to make things trivial, its to test yourself against new challenges and have those challenges be hard enough to be satisfying. It reminds me of the opening sequence of "No Choice" - the point isn't power, the point is the challenge itself, and the satisfaction of overcoming a truly meaningful challenge.
I am so excited to see where this story goes. If you are someone who searches tags "slow progression" or skips stuff tagged "op mc" - then you might be looking for a progression fantasy, rather than a power one. Try it here.
Oh, also the plot seems interesting, although its mostly just hints at a larger picture right now. - chaos childRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0After reading the first chapter, I have high hopes that the author, A.K.A. Flamebeard, takes this unique take on litrpg on a long and entertaining journey. Because from what I've seen so far, this story has the potential to be fantastic, and as long as the author is a good writer, which they are, the story will be a quality work.
