Description
It's hard to flirt when the apocalypse keeps rolling out new expansions.
Shiloh just wants to save enough money to make a safe place for her people, while Wade can only sleep if he knows he's saving the most lives per minute spent. But when money and safety are both on the line, they will end up needing to find out what exactly it is about the other one that doesn't add up. Unfortunately, given the world they survive in, it can be hard to tell the difference between secrets and SECRETS.
Every few decades, a new aspect of magic is released onto Earth in a staggered stop-and-go apocalypse. You never know when you'll wake up with memories of your counterpart in another world (the one forcibly overwriting itself onto Earth to avoid their End of Days), new magical abilities, new monsters to plan your civic infrastructure around, or the kind of secret that forces you to relocate under a false identity [cough cough].
What to Expect:-A VERY slow burn romance
-Non-toxic romance. Characters taking breaks from extravagant magical violence to discuss boundaries, unhealthy dynamics of power & control, and argue the ethics of culling trolls in a complex monster ecosystem.
-A slow burn power/team progression.
-Character-driven with lots of dialogue and communication that resolves easily avoidable conflicts.
-Jokes. A lot of them. And many of those are dick jokes because I can't imagine taking a real-life romance that seriously either.
-Found family,
-All explicit content will be exclusively released to Patreon.
This is the first book in a series of ongoing birthday gifts for my partner. All together it will form ThePassions of the Middle EndSeries, which blends some of her favorite romantasy books like K. F. Breene'sDemigods of San Fransiscoand Suzanne Wright's books plus some of my own favorites (AKA almost everything written by Ilona Andrews and Alexander Wales.) It marries my love of overthinking magic and all the pieces of her favorite comfort reads.Really, though, what I'm saying is: be cool. Also, mention really loudly how smart, pretty, well-manicured, and good at spreadsheets I (the author) am in case she ever checks the comments.Cover art by the excellent Tofuyi. They doamazing work.

I find myself checking on the story ahead of schedule just in case I’ve gotten lucky. - Uncle SashimiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm loving your work! Your characters are filled with personality, your world is fun and interesting, and your story beats breathe long enough for us readers to have fun without sticking around too long. Since I'm enjoying it so much, I wanted to give you a detailed review of my takeaways so far:
I may be heavily biased since your style is similar to mine, but I love your style. It's fun, has tons of personality, and is distinctive without being flowery or over the top. It's filled with personality. In a writing space where a lot of stories blur together, I appreciate style a lot and definitely laughed out loud quite a few times.
Here are some of my favorite lines:
Chapter 4: "Come here, you beautiful, sexy, fluffy, son of a bitch," she said, falling to her knees at the foot of her bed and hugging the queen-sized beauty."
Chapter 5: "Yup. A wild kitty-cat. But just look at that little slut. What dangerous animal does that? Bet you money she was raised by humans."
Chapter 10: "That's probably because he only wanted to show you the cucumber in his pants. Heyoh!" she lifted her glass in a little cheer to herself and continued after taking a not very lady-like slurp of wine."
Chapter 19: "How do you not know how long you've been dating?"
"Because I don't know which meals he took me to after the sex dungeon were dates or just good after-care."
Chapter 27: "The man landed with a strange steampunk sword-spear-looking thing. Wade flashed over her head, so much magical strength pumping through his legs that he almost flew." (It's small, but I love when authors let characters have imperfect information. Too many characters know too much).
These were all lines that I was like, "Damn, that's good." Love it.
In terms of characters, I really like Shilloh. She funny, sarcastic, witty, the right amount of horny, and badass. She also feels like the right character to orient the story around, and her interactions with the other characters are varied and fun. I think I still like the - mbrumieRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I was three words into the author’s note (“are any other…,” Nix’s humble search for company) when I knew I’d love Aliases & Apocalypses. Nix is a masterful storyteller that skillfully weaves his own humor into his narrative, leaving me snickering in punny moments where I knew he was snickering while typing out those same moments in which Shilloh was snickering. Brilliant! I was connected with the character on a much more intimate level and with more immediacy than in other fictional works I’ve read, saving time on the introduction and jumping straight into the story.
