- KroopTroopRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is one of those stories where you're glad you've spent the time trying to find it; a hidden gem in all accounts.
A quick synopsis though (because its what I always look for in a review).
The story begins in a similar setting alot of RPGs usually start out with; our under-leveled MC is looking for some people to grind dungeons with and go on mystical adventures with hopefully later. But, you'd soon find out that not all is what it may seem to be. The main character has a special class that only allows him to level by killing other would be adventurers, and a skill that allows him to blend in. So, right off the bat we are given a front row seat to his difficulties in life in regards to his unique circumstance and how he chooses to overcome it.
Story: Absolutely phenomenal. The author has a gift at introducing other setting and world building without the need for info dumps. Everything is organic and quite dark (a bit like dark souls/ elden ring in you're into that sort of thing). There's an ease of flow from plot point to plot point you'd be hard-pressed to find with any other stories on this website.
Style: The author writes in a 3rd person point of view which is always good in my book, and writes well from every aspect.
Grammar: Haven't found any issue so far so its a 5/5, not much else to say.
Character: Vance (our MC) is refreshingly dark, objective and overall quite logical. He doesn't make asinine mistakes or take himself too seriously. He has a cause and purpose, and pursues both the way one should. Theres not much else to say about the other characters in the story, though all are quite grounded and realistic in motive and interaction.
Give it a read. Like now. You literally won't lose much besides a few minutes of your time if you dislike it, but on the chance you would enjoy it, you now have something to pass the time and lose yourself in for quite awhile. - BullerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I don't mean that in the way of the conversations being intense but that there is an intense number of conversations. A good part is purely just talking. Nothing that I'm angry about so good on that.
The tables are great and well-done. Actual effort has clearly been put into them, so I need to say kudos to that.
And the names! Have all been heard before, but damn if I can't congratulate the author for not going the stereotypical route of top 100 baby names this year.
5/5 - CristianBoyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0First of all
Grammar has no mistakes so far and the Style of writing flows so well, you can see the attention that went through to make it understandable for anyone.
The characters while not many so far, feel real, especially the cleric friend of MC
The reason he joined the party is revealed a bit later and you can see he's not just a megalomaniac murderer,he has motives and motivation.
He's knowledgeable enough that he can maneuver the underworld. He doesn't make any stupid mistakes.
The Mc sold it for me,but the style, grammar and the care it went into it just made me recommend it to anyone.
So sad it didnt take off so far but i'm sure it will. - DraddockRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0You can tell from the first chapter that this is going to be good.
The writing is solid, keeping you interested when ostensibly nothing is happening.
The story: It starts off kind of weird, with the MC doing slightly weird things that don't really make sense. BUT THEN you start getting the sense for his perhaps dubious confidence in everything. The feeling that he knows something you don't: why did he intentionally eat poison? Why does he seem so confident when he's comparatively so low level? Why does he want to join a party?
All these little details tease you into a small mystery, and then that leads you into a story where you JUST have to read the next chapter before going to sleep. - FIENDRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm bothering to leave a review to tell u guys that this is outstanding and instead of the clown jokes of stories on front page this should be trending
its about this dude who has to hunt adventures as his class. He is the definition of lawful evil and will do anything to promote himself.
no justice boner, no dumb girls, no dumb romance, no idiotic harems. Just a line wold, his pet goblin, and his fiendish class as a spectral assassin, as unimpressive as that class may seem it's actually pretty cool esp when u realize it's not his powers that make him op but instead his wit, the ability to think 10 steps ahead of everyone and a ruthlessness only a killer can bear - BugEyesRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I've only just started reading last night and I already found myself immersed in the story. And I've yet to find a reason not to.
Like the dude above said in his review, and as what I've observed too, the story is progressive, full of wonder and mysterious. The details about the worldbuilding are being given as story progress. I can't say anything about the characters yet aside from the mc, Vance. Vance is, something in his choice of decisions, sets him apart from all other mc's I'm used to seeing. He doesn't act for righteousness, not for the good of the masses. He acts for himself, for his goals.
Probably. I don't really know yet for sure. I'll read more to know about it.
Either way, everything's been great so far. As long as the quality doesn't take a sharp drop, I'll see to it to follow where the story goes.
Best luck to the author. - ChryissRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story was very close to 5 stars, but I'm of the belief that most well-written stories can still yet be improved. However, this one was close to where I almost stated that any improvement suggestions wouldn't be major, and thus, it could be 5, in my heart possibly, rather than on an unbiased, objective level.
Going into this free review, as I offered on my forum thread, I was fully expecting to not be impressed as I rarely am of many web fictions. I like all genres, but I'm very particular in my taste. Though, I suppose everyone has a preference, so I'm not all too different. Either way, I do consider myself a harsh yet honest critic.
But wow, I can honestly say that I was impressed on several grounds with this story, and I'm surprised that this story hasn't shot up in stats. It appears that the slower update rate and lack of advertising by the authors might be the reason why this fiction didn't hit the algorithm. Regardless, I sincerely wish the best for the author because I think this is a solid gem of a LitRPG story that doesn't take the blue boxes and runs unnecessarily with them.
Firstly, I'm not a big fan of LitRPG when the story becomes predominately all about the numbers. I see that as a critical flaw and laziness for true storytelling. But in Adventurer Slayer, that is not at all the case.
To begin with, let's start with Character, the strongest component of this story. Vance, the main character, is a curious fellow that continually has me interested in every chapter as he progressively gets more characterized with his true abilities revealed bit by bit. Just like the party members he begins with in the story, readers are not given his true stats and identity right off the bat. And I thoroughly enjoy story structures like these where everything is not explained right away and instead lead the reader through a true world-building and storytelling experience. But more on that later.
Vance is someone which you can neither sympathize with nor cheer for, but - DinzuRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This, is an interesting one. The first 17 chapters were absolute gold, chapters 18-45 dragged on for way too long and the meaningfulness of anything that happened during that time is limited until the next class ascension. Chapters after 45? Gold again and I'm left wishing for more.
The story is verbose and well written, the only reason for the lowered score is the middle part of the plot (so far).
There will be slight spoilers ahead.
This story is situated in two Realms: The Lesser Realms and The Middlerift.
The Lesser Realms is what I'm here for. It is the usual fantasy stuff with swords and magic, monsters and men. The setting is interesting and hunting adventurers is what I presume we all arrive here for. The intrigue and deception, betrayals and backstabbings! It's all very good stuff that I wholly approve of.
The Middlerift, however, is something along the lines of a nightmare realm locked in eternal conflict. It is pretty interesting, but there is a serious problem with it, at least this first time around: The lack of any real stakes. You see, we start in the Lesser Realms, we get lots of nice world building, there are plot hooks left hanging when we shift realms, there are things that we are obviously going to come back to. There is no real risk of the first "Class Ascension" failing, which vastly diminishes the feeling of urgency in The Middlerift.
The other issue with Middlerift is the time constraints. It's supposed to give you a sense of urgency, yet the characters we meet in The Middlerift seem like they spend their entire lives there. No mention of The Lesser Realms except to mention where they're from, a casual "yeah I'm originally from X place" like the Lesser Realms aren't the ones where they spend the vast majority of their time. Makes it feel like our protagonist is the only one who wants to get back.
After the prolonged stay in Middlerift, which isn't skippable as we learn more about the Lesser Realms in the process, we're back to what we started - 10016Royal Road★★★★ 3.5Doesn't really feel very connected and feels like a bunch of side quests became the main story due to the lack of development for each situation. The disjointedness might clear up after a while but I feel that if each plot point was developed a bit more when introduced it might feel a bit more cohesive.
