- Alex BeaumontRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story starts of great and really builds up. Loving the characters, and the main system for the lead is very interesting and well implemented. It does everything you'd want from the genre, and more. I've read others from Actus, but this is my first review on the overall content. Another hit in the making. :D
- Davey BonesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm generally not one to write a review but here we go. First, the characters as they are in my mind one of the greatest strengths and flaws all in one go. They lack something in depth however there is real characterization to each one. Better than most I'd say. Their interactions sometimes feel a bit shallow but I'm thinking the author is still finding their rythym here.
Second, style. I really enjoy it so far. Though I'm only a short way into the story. There hasn't been any POV jumping which I greatly appreciate, it flows smoothly, and the author is genuinely talented at show don't tell.
The story is appealing to me in most every way. The author pulls off a grim and gritty feel without being obnoxious or over the top. Also, I am very tired of LITRPG stories. I gave this one a chance on a whim. I'm glad I did because the elements I dislike about said genre are thin. No giant status tables to be found here. No over the top Isekai nonsense. It hearkens back to a more traditional fantasy feel that I have dearly missed in my reading of late.
I've noticed a few grammar mistakes here and there but nothing terribly off-putting and generally the same sort of mistakes I'd probably make as I'm not the most knowledgeable in that area and honestly it's very well edited IMO.
Overall, one of the best novels I've found on RR and I'm really looking forward to more. - GarnivalRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The plot is flowing nicely. They stay in one place long enough to not make it feel rushed but not too long it starts getting boring.
The humour is on point. If you liked the banter from Streamforged you, it got even better.
Every releveant characters have their own quirks.
Nothing more to add really. It is just a damn good story. - GrinRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story has started off great, and I hope it stays that way.
The characters are fun, the author makes a very alive world with very few words, the story is quite fast paced and full of twists and turns ... and come on. Who doesn't like a smart guy making good predictions ?
A good binge read. - TheChesireMouseRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I fell in love reading this story with the world and plot set out by our main cast. Knell's party members are all memorable and their interactions with each other are genuinely so much fun. With the MC being very driven and tactic focused the plot moves forward often at breakneck speeds letting you actually feel urgency in the crew's adventure.
The author has done a good job of setting up Knell's entire journey being focused on revenge, without having the character and dialogue come off as an edgelord power fantasy.
I hope to see this story resume and I will be here with it does. Scheming, pirates, and magic. What more could you ask for? - baelrathRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0That's Cap' to you landlubbers!
The words flow fast and fun. Author has written a zippy tale with lots of potential backstory elements, like gods and their offspring with a mash up of system and magic in there too.
For pop culture references, id say if you mashed up Pirates of the Carribean with Clash of the Titans with a dash of magic and litrpg you'd get this story.
It thrives on its characters and its dialogue. It doesn't make much waste of words describing much else.
Because of this the chapters read quick and snappy. It nor the MC waste time for little else.
Mechanical is flawless as with most Author's stories. The story has laid its bare bones out but has kept to its chest on how it intends to follow its state decree of action.
How the story is told is very watch and see, with a very Sherlock flare of intelligence and dissociation with whats happening, though the wit is not a acerbic.
You could easily binge the first 20 chapters in an hour or so. Read it and find out if this romp is for you ;)
One wonders why there isn't currently a hilarous mascot to champion this rag tag bunch of rapscallions, but i'm sure that will come with time. - georgethebobRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Solid writing with very few mistakes. Characters are developed well and engaging. Nice pace for the plot. MC has some plot armor but it fits well with the writing style; this is like reading an old Greek story version of a litrpg with timely ups and downs and it doesn't get bogged down in the details. Unique and a refreshing take on the genre.
- PangeaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0style: good style no mistakes flows well and is immersing you should like it allows for interjection of different perspectives to hint the future and keep you hooked. 5 star
grammar: no real mistakes at least that stay for long i see some comments suggesting fixes but its already fixed when I check (this review may need some grammar checks) 5 star
story: new and refreshing with a pirate veiwpoint (kinda) not villain mc though and immersive with good plot points arcs and stuff hints of the future and worldbuilding mostly around th gods and ther enemies 5 star
character: good indepth characters you can relate to and are about though I do think Stix IS ANNOYING AND SHOULD DIE but I think thats kinda her point and her conflict with immortal guy. 5 star
pros: everything but Stix
cons: Stix how annoying she is and her character though aouthor said he fixed some things in the start of the book and her motivatoion is her brother but I still hate her
overveiw: you should read it its good and shows good future potential its aouthor has written books before so should have expeirence therefor I think it is deserving of 5 stars and you should read it. GIVE ME UPVOTES (or else) - QuazzyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: nothing too eloquent, but that's by my inflated standards. Structure is varied, pacing is excellent, the way that Actus conveys information is creative and always interesting to read. They don't fall into literary cliches or cheap tactics to make the story or a given sentence more dramatic, as is all too prevalent on RR. Better yet, they're consistent with their internal logic, power levels, etc., which adds to the well-maintained stakes. Definitely far above average for a YA novel. 5/5 stars.
Grammar: I'd have to do some serious combing to find a grammatical error. Actus has a great understanding of the English language, and when something slips through they catcch and fix it promptly. 5/5 stars.
Story: Solid story, doesn't fall into any blatant tropes, solid feel of progression and continuous stakes. Good balance between the readers wanting to know more while also having enough to chew on. 5/5 stars.
Characters: The primary area where Actus could stand to improve. They're solid characters, don't get me wrong- they just tend to be a tad two-dimensional. The story is pretty light (in regards to density) as it is, so it could stand for deeper and more complex characters. They do develop and whatnot, but that's a poor gauge of a story. They need more fleshed out reasons for their morals in order to make that development interesting, in the same way that a fight scene is only interesting if you establish the rules first and establish them well. The main crew has a lot of fire due to events in their life, but it takes a certain kind of person to react the way they did, and there's a lot of benefit to be gained from having reasons why they have those philosophies in the first place, so that their wilting or triumph in the face of philosophical challenge is more significant. Actus already experiments with sacrifice and value, so it's the perfect place to polish! Characters are definitely one of the trickier parts of writing. Actus' are, however, absolutely delightf - TuliusIIRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The novel is from a author who already have a few books out, his style is really fast paced and well developed. The characters are not well developed because the author already put them on focus with a story behind them and does not show much of their past before trowing them into the mix.
But the action is constant so i dont know if their background becomes relevant down the line. I have a few things that i personally dont like in the story, but the fact that the author finished one novel already and is a constant publisher makes up for a lot. (Because most of authors in RR just go on Hiatus and never come back.)
