Description

Imrathil was once the strongest and the greatest of the Knights of Dol Morag, humanity's defenders. With his brothers and sisters in arms, he drove back the hordes of the Demon King and the armies of darkness that followed him. Blessed by the gods and renowned by all the mortal races as the greatest hero the world has ever seen. Until, one day, he was betrayed by the very people he thought of as his brethren. Murdered, Imrathil's body was hacked apart and scattered in the Nameless Woods, where no one would ever find him.

Our story begins a hundred years later. The world is in decline. Monsters and demons roam the countryside, preying on the weak and defenseless. Bandits, brigands, and corrupt nobles control the roads. Petty Kingdoms, ruled by the former members of the Knights of Dol Morag, wage war against those who dare defy them. In the Far North, the Demon King stirs from his slumber. To the Far East, entire empires burn as a barbaric horde of horsemen gallop from the plains, burning and pillaging as they go. To the Far West, an army of Ogres and Giants march under a single banner, devouring entire cities in their rampage. And, to the Far South, a strange sickness spreads among the people, turning good men and women into ravenous beasts. In the remains of the Nameless Woods, an old warrior awakens to a very unfamiliar world.

This is a dark and atmospheric fantasy with nice, chunky chapters containing detailed descriptions. I find this missing in a lot of stories but it really is essential to create the kind of ambiance required for this kind of setting, that of a forlorn, dead, and decaying world. Nothing has been particularly gory so far - more ruins, decay, and old death.
MC is still in the discovery phase of the story so no real action scenes as yet but they are interacting with other characters and violence is obviously coming soon. The storyline has a lot of potential for multiple books assuming the writer continues the same steady approach as with his other works.
I am particularly loving the MC with his complicated nature, priorities, and goals.
A Paladin who devours souls, an engine of vengeance who protects the innocent, the Beast's slayer of gods and all round honourable fellow.
I am eagerly anticipating his evolution as he attempts to resolve the conflicts ahead of him, moral and violent. There is already foreshadowing that his negative emotions have power and may not be entirely under his own control.
A few typos, missing words etc. so could use a little more editing but nothing out of the ordinary for a well written Royal Road story.
