A Train Ride Home is based on a modern-day fictional city where technology is advancing faster than people can keep up with. Our main characters, Eden, Charlotte and Ken, thrive rather than struggle in this modern city. They face various challenges throughout their days and Eden has a masterplan for the company he is working for.
Charlotte is just a normal fresh university graduate who has just gotten her first job. Her boy best friend also happens to be her crush.
Ken is a seasoned office worker with big ambitions. He knows the sky is the limit when it comes to achieving great things - whether it be promotions, big salary or even becoming famous/well-established in the business world.
Eden has a storied past, he came from failure at his first company and is coming for vengeance. Only time will tell if he succeeds in his mission. And we soon find out the consequences of his actions as the story rolls on.
What to expect:

- Wolfgang HuxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A Train Ride Home is a slow burn. Don't expect to get all the info at once. We do start with a bit of action and excitement but then we pull back to quite a few chapters of office life of our characters. And that's okay because the author deftly describes daily office life in this futurescape. This is a sense of foreboding and mystery and poetic emptiness. Think Murakami.
Style: I love the little descriptions of things, from food, to the colours of street lights to the way a paper crumples out on a desk. The author really does their best to transport you to the location so you can feel like you are truly there and a part of the story.
Grammar: A few things here and there, but some of these may actually be stylistic choices. Tense shifting for example or pronoun shifting. But neither of these detract from the overall feel or enjoyment of the story and a good editing pass should solve these so no worries there!
Story: I feel like its only just starting! If you've read the synopsis you know all the story lines will tie together and we will find out "Eden's Master Plan" but at this point I'm more just enjoying the ride as I'm toured around offices / the city / the various characters lives. I'm excited to see where it goes!
Character: Love this! We are still getting to go deeper in on characters but so far they are really interesting as are their jobs and personal tastes and disputes and scenarios etc. The author clearly enjoys this part of writing and I think we will see more interesting things as the piece develops! - CT JohnsonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Honestly, not what I expected first going into it, and most definitely not for everyone.
At first I kept expecting.... something. Then I realized that it's simply just a train ride hom and I quickly got taken along for the ride.
The author does a splendid job at giving each person little snippets and interactions that adds to their characters and builds a comfortable familiarity with them.
I like how free flowing it is as it slowly paints a picture of a world along the rails. Its a very unique and fun reading experience.
There is definitely a state of mind that comes with a story like this as you just sit back and watch as the world the author creates goes by. People, places, voices, all just constantly drifting forward at the speed of a train.
If you want a story that has a solid frame with structure then this isn't a tale for you. But if you're okay with just "people watching " this is an elaborate immersive experience in literary form.
I think the best thing about this is that it's so casual from beginning to end. It maintains an air of detachment while being mildly interested and the balance is cathartic.
This fiction is a job well done. - Falling LeavesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A Train Ride Home is a great change of pace. Characters really strike home, with such human and natural feelings and ambitions. With the 1st person narratives, each character is brought to life through their own thoughts on top of their words and actions.
I was expecting to read about the struggles and dreams of these people, and that is certainly there, but I was very surprised by the added mystery. What is happening to major businesses? How do they go under without anyone knowing? Where are they? Who’s involved?
At the same time, everything is interspersed with very real everyday issues, of the kind that we all know but almost never see in a novel. I enjoyed the changing pov, as while this story is set in a fictional city, it strongly reminds me of places like Hong Kong or Singapore.
The style fits the story well, and gives the reader in-depth knowledge of motivations and thoughts. I don’t usually like 1st person narratives, but this just fits so well.
The plot is well built, dropping hints, but revealing things as the characters themselves discover them. Complex corporate plots are not common on RR, and neither are such genuine and realistic slice of life stories – A Train Ride Home has both! If there’s anything I can complain about, it’s that some chapters are very short, but that has nothing to do with the actual story.
I had no real issues with any the grammar, and it was fun seeing things through the eyes of someone coming from a different culture.
Each character is well fleshed out. You need to keep reading to find out more, as no character is every fully explained in a single chapter, but you get to learn more and more as events unfold.
If you’re looking for something different, and mystery and struggle that doesn’t involve hacking away at hordes or shooting bolts of lightning, this is a must read! - keeganashleyliveRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0What stuck out the most to me in this read is the author's unique voice. The story has a pleasant sort of jaunt to it, whisking you along like an observer in the lives of the characters. The author excels at descriptions, really pulling out noticable details while still being able to keep the descriptive paragraphs shorter without dragging on (no burdensome, boring paragraphs - more like how you'd look around quickly and observe a room after stepping into it). It's unique, and I found myself completely sitting back and enjoying the ride. The chapters are on the shorter side so it, also, makes it an easy read if you're prone to fly though chapters (I'm a bit of a fast reader, myself).
This story is not particularly action-packed---it's more of a build, incorporating mundane activities (like going to work and riding public transportation) while readers peek into the life of the character. There seems to be an emphasis on food because several parts made me hungry from the amazing descriptions...or maybe I'm just hungry? Anyway, it was a fun addition.
The character descriptions made me instantly like the characters. They felt relatable and well-crafted.
There were no glaring grammatical errors that hindered my reading. In fact, I really enjoyed the streaming flow of the writing. Well done, and kudos to the author! - HitmarkRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Total: 4.5 stars
Style: I really like how you try to set up the atmosphere very well. A great example would be when they were in the train and there was suffocating silence, plus the addition of the baby crying really helped portray the tension in that scene.
Story: I don't have much to say here except that it's certainly less cliche than others. Mostly because it's situated in the modern world without much outside influences like some form of towers appearing or something. It does make it more alluring. Also another Unique thing in this story is that it doesn't follow the average word count and tends to be on the shorter side.
Grammar: I didn't find much of a problem here. I'd say that some of the sentences tend to over detail which did seem a tad bit boring. Also, I like how you show your story, but sometimes there are parts that I think will be better off shown that told. Another thing that bothered me a little was the weird spacing every so often in the story. It break me from my immersion and lessens the experience for me. Other than that, there's nothing else.
Characters: I'd say that the characters are well made. They show that they have their own personalities and own opinions which enhance the dialogue of the scenes. As for the main character. He is very expressive like how he sometimes tells his thoughts without thinking about it. I think that's a thing that most story MCs don't possess anymore.
Overall: I'd say that I'll recommend reading this. It's perfect for those who like atmospheric build up which add some form of thrill in the story. - Authors DreadRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Jumping into A Train Ride Home is like hopping onto a roller coaster - it's a thrilling ride that keeps you guessing at every turn. Set in a city that's more tech-savvy than its inhabitants, this web series is a fascinating exploration of how we adapt (or struggle) with the fast-paced world around us.
The series revolves around three main characters - Eden, Charlotte, and Ken. Each of them brings something unique to the table. Eden's got a past that's as mysterious as it is intriguing. Charlotte's fresh out of university, trying to navigate her first job and her feelings for her best friend. And Ken? He's got big dreams and the ambition to match.
The writing style is straightforward and easy to digest. It's like having a conversation with a friend - you're drawn in, and before you know it, you're invested in the characters' lives. The series could benefit from a bit more descriptive language to really paint a picture of the world the characters inhabit, but it's a minor quibble.
The characters are the heart and soul of the series, each with their own quirks and personalities. Eden's journey from failure to revenge is a nice touch. Charlotte's struggles as a fresh graduate are relatable, and Ken's ambition is infectious.
My main issue is the length of the chapters, they're super short, but for some readers this might be adequate. Grammar-wise, the story is ok. I'm not really picky when it comes to this.
All in all, I think this story might be worth your time. So, hop on and enjoy the ride! - s44Royal Road★ 1.0I'm sure there's something buried in here, but the rapid swapping back and forth between first and third person for the same character makes the lurking content unreachable. Why do authors think this is a good idea? Especially on Royal Road, a site that offers plenty of alternatives, making things difficult for a reader is the kiss of death.
