A Girl and Her Fate

Description
Avien Shepard heralded change with his arrival. Not only was he born on the dawn a solar eclipse, three meteors lit up the sky on the day of his birth. Seven sages visited across seven years to gift him with knowledge of the seven legal schools of magic, and a deceased outlaw fought his way up from the hells to grant knowledge of the tabooed eighth on the next. On his eleventh birthday, a sword fell from the sky and landed in a very important chair. Soldiers from far and wide traveled to attempt to extract the sword from the queen’s throne, but none could shift the blade, until Avien. When he was fourteen, Avien learned of a prophecy that foretold of his decade long battle with the Demon Prince of Invea.
But this isn't his story. Avien is kind of a chump.
This is the story of Amber Jewel, a girl who has only been Chosen as another Chosen one’s wife.

- BookofStrangeThingsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0TLDR; The story started off really interesting, and only grew to hold my attention more as I read.
Style, and Grammar: The writing is good, not dull in the least, but sometimes there are grammatical errors or even entire words missing (the author forgets the word know like 3 times for example.) but other than that it's good.
Story and Character: The story is fun to follow and the characters we follow are interesting, having little things about them that make them feel more convincing in all the right ways. Certain things at the beginning, like Avien's parents' behavior made me appropriately upset, and I appreciate that.
Final thoughts: Things I wish there was more of? Well, even as big a fan of absolute tragedy as I am, I understand there is a time and a place and honestly, I'm very happy with this story and it's balance of good and bad happenings. Things are also very fantastical without being impossible to connect with and a lot of the little things I think other authors forget have been included here. In terms of what is missing, all I can say is, Avien hasn't been beaten up enough for my own liking. Poor, stupid, blind-to-the-world Avien. - RoseButterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Every few months I have to come back and reread chapter 46 and 47. The line "Yes. With manacles." is one of the most badass I have read in any piece of fiction. A Girl and Her Fate is absolutely fantastic and could easily stand on its own. The premise of All forcing fictional tropes into life underpins the narrative and meta-narrative of this story in a way that is truly delicious to read. On top of that, Rouge Rogue adds a flavorful twist with the concept of a Mascevan path which delectably complicates the story's theme of destiny as Amber leans in to being a Vitorian Envoy.
Overall, A Girl and Her Fate is a compelling read with a sassy, relatable female main character, gripping adventures, and a poignant take on the concept of fate. - UnlimitedNachoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0In Short:
Unique subversion of tropes in a way that continuously affects the plot, combined with an emotional atmosphere that builds tension quickly and a relatable main character, makes for a captivating read. Give it a shot!
In Long:
Style:
When many stories parody tropes, it is either for side jokes that don't affect the overall plot that much, or it is taken so seriously that the jokes lose their charm. On the other hand, where this story shines the brightest is in its ongoing use of tropes and parodies of tropes as points of contention for the main character. Rouge Rogue is able to find a rare balance not many RR authors have found to create an atmosphere out of parody that is not so serious as to become unfunny, yet not so unserious as to harm the story.
As this is a first-person story, the main mood is set by the emotions of the main character, Amber. She begins as an angsty teen surrounded by "Chosen Ones" and "Prophecies," and she is both fed up at not having control over her life and eager to go out and improve her situation. This mixture of anxiety and hope allows this story to build a very large amount of tension over only a few chapters. Said tension will be incredibly satisfying when it resolves, but it also has the problem of staying tense for so long as to become grating. There are some moments of levity to vary the mood, but the tension is still ever present in the background.
Story:
This story is heading towards a very clear destination. Just by examining the tropes subverted, it's clear where it will end up. However, the journey there is not so obvious. Along the way is plenty of room for plot twists and big reveals.
The unique blend of high tension and interesting trope subversion makes a rather captivating story with very little immersion breaking.
Grammar:
Clear and consice. Angsty prose is angsty.
Characters:
Anyone who's been young and frustrated at having no control over their own life will relate to Amber. While all the local kids her age a - iolandeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The first chapter is a bit confusing, there's a lot of information dumped on you and a lot of backstory that's apparent but you don't really know. You get the basic gist though.
The next couple of chapters are pretty good and I really like the main character. You really get the feeling she's in over her head and she's going to get into a lot of trouble. I wonder who bubbles use to be, if he used to be part of the main group. I wonder why all the parents and such are so content to let her be a wife to some dude that she doesn't like. It seems stupid to me. - vladeragRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0...Than you will absolutely love this!
Honestly, it is kind of like "A Practical Guide to Evil" mixed with "There is No Epic Loot Here, Only Puns," but more focused on adventure. This is an absolute must read, that I wholeheartedly recommend, and so - in the grand tradition of my very favorite story reviews - there isn't much I really want to say here because I feel it will spoil things.
Except that, honestly? I am kinda rooting for Alvien a little. Like, if he can pull off getting the main character to fall in love with him at this point, that would be seriously impressive.
Which actually brings me into one my one, and only, complaint about this story. I feel that it would benefit from chapters set from the point of view of other characters. A few of those sprinkled in among the rest would really flush out the world and the characters in it.
Otherwise, I find the story fun and engaging, the characters fascinating and complex, and the grammar to be perfectly on point. This is a five star story for sure.
As an aside, this review fell 15 words short of an advanced reviews minimum length. I wasn't aware there was a minimun length before now. Huh. - Lord TurtleRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5As the previous reviewer mentioned it is a tad confusing with the info dumps. Still despite that the world building aspects are interesting but still leaves us with a lot of questions about how the world works. Aside from that the characters are pretty interesting and the backstory definitely makes me want more.
TLDR: Would totally recommend!
