Community Rating
Description
Ages past, the world burned and broke at the hands of the Demon Lord, a mage so powerful he opened doors to a hellish, alien plane of existence all over the world.
After many generations of suffering, survival, and adapting to a new way of life, he's been reborn, reincarnated back into the world he once destroyed.
In this new life, he...
Uh...
Might have made a mistake with his reincarnation spell.
With his magic powers lost to him in this life, he'll need to pursue a different avenue to power, and he'll start by hunting down the pieces of his old life.

- HA-GreeneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: From the start, the author has a way with words that helps to envision the world unfolding before us. Details are provided through conversation rather than just dropped in an info-dumpy way. From the way that mana is brought about, to the Rupturing that established the Domains, to the Domains themselves, this is truly a well thought out and crafted world. I look forward to seeing where and how the Abyss deepens, and the eventual return to Tarrus' POV.
Story: We begin with young Tarrus expecting to conquer the world, only to be ruthlessly shot down by his limited mana capabilities and delegated to the life of a deskman. The story soon cuts over to a group of adventurers, who follow up on a rumor that leads them into danger-- adversaries that truly match them one to one. And then we reach the first boss encounter.
Grammar: Fairly solid, only a few minor mistakes here and there.
Characters: The characters are where this story truly shines. Tarrus is a delight in his delusions of grandeur come this life, for the short time that we are with him. Will and company all stand out as their own people as they delve the dangers of this Domain, and even the Not Nina displayed humanity at the end. - LuminstateRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0OVERALL
This story is light-hearted and tongue-in-cheek – a nice easy read, with gentle comedy and a range of characters.
STORY
A humorous adventure following multiple characters as they attempt to realise their ambitions. We get to experience adventure in the mysterious Domains through the eyes of the adventuring party, repeatedly switching back to sections of the frustrated and furious demon lord, who is not handling his teenage-hood well, and hates not being taken seriously. It's a fairly slow burn, witha lot of character interaction between action scenes.
CHARACTERS
The light-hearted tension between the very disparate characters makes for entertaining reading. Each character has a unique nature and background. There is light exposition that helps you to understand their past, and occasional hints at mysteries that will presumably be revealed later on. Even though the main character is technically an anti-hero, it’s still easy to empathise with him.
SETTING
The Abyss and the Domains are a great way to introduce dungeons that are embedded into the lore. The first one the adventurers encounter (without giving any spoilers) has some interesting mechanics which require them to think on their feet, and use their spells in clever ways to defeat the enemies.
GRAMMAR
Grammar and sentence construction is fluid and easy to read, and the spelling is excellent. - GoogiemanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Disclaimer: This review was done as part of a Review Swap.
One of the benefits of engaging in Review Swaps, however, is the opportunity to be exposed to stories you may have otherwise missed in the vast trove that is RoyalRoad. This review is focused on the content up-to-and-including Chapter 9, but I will most certainly be reading ahead. Now, onto the review!
Style
This story takes full advantage of the third-person narrator. I found this especially true in the initial chapters when, despite the focus being on our main protagonist Tarrus, additional details about the scene not necessarily apparent to them were added to enhance the scene. Their word choice and sentence structure strikes a balance between accessible and complex which makes chapters easily digestible without feeling plain or flat.
Story
In many ways, the setting will remind you of something you might have read before. A fantastical world, a great tragedy, creatures from beyond and a protagonist thrown through time. I do not say this as a criticism. These story elements are popular for a reason, and this story uses them in a way that feels like a fresh take. I am excited to see how their setting continues to evolve.
Grammar
The grammar and syntax in this story are solid. I spotted the rare typo which would easily come out in the wash - nothing I would penalize the score for.
Character
The characters are, I feel, one of the strongest elements of this story but also the source of my one complaint with the initial cluster of chapters. To call it a complaint is not entirely accurate, either. Perhaps it would be best to refer to it as a matter of preference.
Character interactions in early chapters evoke a sense of well executed, light-hearted humour and frame the protagonist as someone with a misguided understanding of their current place in the world. Their retainers are delightful and that is all I will say on the matter for now (hint: go read the story).
What I found unfortunate was that, after falling - DearDireRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Disclaimer: This review is a part of a review swap.
Style is excellent. It's not too wordy, but it's not simple either. The author struck a great balance. The grammar was similarly good as well. However, I did spot a couple of spelling mistakes but they weren't anything to major. Overall, the novel is a treat to read.
All the group members are all pretty memorable. Tarrus is fun too, but sometimes he feels a little too soft for a past demon lord. The story is fine, not anything new. There are alot of classic tropes, like the magic scale detecting an extremely low number. However, that's not necessarily a bad thing but it's something to be aware of. It did lessen my interest by a tiny bit. The story is also on the slower side, but it's fast enough to keep my attention.
I don't know if it's just me, but the first couple of chapters felt a little bit on the long side. Maybe breaking them up into smaller, digestable chapter would better.
Overall A Fractured Past: A Demon Lord Reincarnation Story is a good book, I'll definitely be reading more. I sincerely enjoyed the main groups interactions. - Dreamer's RiotRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5(This review is part of a review swap)
This is a fun and engaging story that is definitely worth your time.
The Style:
The style is engaging and well-crafted. It is both vivid and immersive without being overwhelming or overly complex. The story is smooth and detailed, and I had no trouble getting drawn into the story. It's not an uncommon type of story, the powerful character reborn and using their knowledge in their new life, but it takes this premise and does a good job with it.
The Story:
As I just mentioned, the basic premise is fairly common, but that is not a criticism. Every new story in the same genre has a new story to tell. The focus on magic items and relics is fun, and the world is interesting. The plot is a bit slower without being too slow, giving you time to get to know each character.
The Grammar
The grammar is perfectly acceptable. A typo here or there, an awkward sentence, but nothing worse than I have done myself or any other writer on here has. It's just a fact that proofreading is never perfect, but there is nothing in this writing that will distract you or trip you up.
The characters:
The characters get the time they deserve. Tarrus is interesting and compelling and the supporting cast each have something valuable to contribute to the story whether it's conflict or humor.
All in all this is a worthwhile read and I definitely recommend giving it a shot. - Quan__Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5A familiar premise: a demon-lord returns to rebuild his armies and power, given a comedic slant. Tarrus is a fun main character because it's fun to watch him both succeed and fail. You want to see his ego humbled but are also are intrigued on how he plans to return to power under new and challenging circumstances. There's a lot of different avenues for the character to go, and it will be interesting to see how the author decides to move forward.
The premise of the story is satirical, but the setting takes itself seriously, making sure the reader understands the mechanics of the world's history and systems. This means that when we're following characters that aren't our MC, the tone of the story becomes a little more familiar, and the overall progress of the plot more akin to other stories in this genre. This I think takes away from the unique gimmick that will draw a reader to the story initially, but it isn't a huge problem when the side characters are likable and well-developed in their own right. I do think, however, that the story switches POVs a little too early. We only get two chapters focusing on Tarrus before moving on to other characters and the world's history, and I think it makes the start of the story a little hard to get your footing on. I want to get properly acquainted with our fail-lord MC before learning about the setting! However, once the storylines start colliding, this problem fades. Looking forward to seeing what strengths the story decides to lean into, whether that be it's comedic elements, its adventures elements, or simply developing the growing cast and multiple POVs.
Grammar and style are pretty much on-point. Slick transition between narrative and thought, with no mistakes that I saw while reading. I think some dialogue leans into the over-expository, but it's hard to say if this is an issue with the writing itself or just the pacing of how the reader is introduced to the setting. (Apart from one small reference, this will be a spoiler-free review.)
In no order at all, my thoughts on this story were the following:
- This was, in my opinion, a wonderfully written story for people who love strategy RPGs.
- Strangely, I found it somewhat hard to feel anything for Will (though he is by far one of my favorites in this story) when [omitted because spoilers], just because I literally have a torn right shoulder as I write this lol.
- This wasn’t my “usual” or “go-to” genre.
- Zero issues with grammar for me. It was A M A Z I N G and this writer probably has 9,999 university degrees in English.
- Massive thank-you to the author for sprinkling out the dialogue the way they did, especially during the parts that were so full of magic or spells or bosses.
- In my humble opinion, the emotional sides of some characters were conveyed not as evenly as with some of the others; it seemed to me like perhaps a more “character”-ful aspect was not distributed equally among all members of the cast.
- Even when some characters showed more emotion, I felt as though the main focus was still much more so (and heavily) on fantasy, weapons, or magic. But I’m confident a lot of people will absolutely love this.
- I saw no issues with spelling; as far as I can remember, it was absolutely flawless as of this writing.
- I personally felt like while some parts of the dialogue were really great, these “great” parts were a bit hard to come by (at least at first) and it took a while to get to the good parts.
- Sometimes, I felt like I was taken a little too far out of my own head. Please note that visualizing very high fantasy- specifically mages, spells, and lots of magic at once- can be difficult for me personally if I have not yet formed an emotional investment in at least one of the characters. While reading, I was a - MK bk-201Royal Road★★★★ 3.5So a reincarnated demon lord with his magic powers lost to him in this life, he'll need to pursue a different avenue to power, and he'll start by hunting down the pieces of his old life.
