A Comedy at Sea

Description
The Dragonslayer's Party have made names for themselves in the world as living legends, the kinds you hear of being sung in taverns by bards. Led by the titular Dragonslayer, Kalaman Kampus the Invincible, the party has faced very little defeat over the many years they've been active.
When war begins brewing with the north, the Dragonslayer decide to take on a quest to escort a ship to the east. By all accounts, it should've been a simple and risk-free mission.
Yet right before the ship set sail, Kalaman suddenly recruits a young and inexperienced cleric girl to the party, completely out-of-character and without his party's permission.
Hundreds of miles from land, cut off from all outside contact, and the seemingly indomitable party begins to crumble from the inside as they catch wind of an unwanted intruder in their midst.
Based on a homebrewed DnD Campaign character's backstory.
IMPORTANT AUTHOR'S NOTE
A Comedy at Seais considered an indirect prequel to my currently ongoing story,Mimicmage. However, I wrote aComedy at Seaas a silly little backstory novel I wrote for a DnD character I played and had no bigger plans for it. So when I started planning forMimicmage, I changed several core events and concepts within the setting and world that these two stories take place in.Put simply,A Comedy at Seais no longer consideredcanontoMimicmage. I fully intend to rewriteA Comedy at SeawithinMimicmage, but that will be for another day.
If you do decide to readMimicmageafterA Comedy at Sea, just keep in mind that the events in this novel are no longer canon toMimicmage.

- obsidianblackRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is really one of the hidden gems on this site. If you enjoyed stories like "Trial of the Alchemist" then I highly recommend giving this a look.
Note that this is not a litrpg or progression fantasy so if you're looking for that this is the wrong place.
Things I liked about this story:
- it's well planned out from start to finish. It does not meander all over the place and loose its point somewhere in a sea of text
- the characters really make you feel connected to them - kuyapanRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Notice: I am friends with the author, but he did not ask me to review this.
The style and grammar are alright. I'm new-ish to reading fantasy books, so I've yet to familiarise myself with the best style, but the one used here checks most marks from a technical standpoint — there's a good flow to the text and transitions between scenes isn't confusing. The author leans heavily into descriptions, which is great, albeit overwhelming in frequency in singular sentences at times. Despite this, they do help illustrate the scenes a lot. The grammar is also average. There are inconsistencies with the verb tenses, and I can't tell if it's intentional. There are a few typos litered about as well.
The story and characters are where the book shines. The build-up of information as the chapters progress brings things to light in such an interesting way. I was initially confused about what was happening, but once it clicked, I was hooked. I found myself trying to figure out what was happening in anticipation for the next chapters, and even then, I was still surprised by what the author actually had in store. Most of the characters are interesting, too, and their personal motivations and stories are well-painted. I absolutely adore Nentonia. Her characterization as an adult was so justified by her past that I'm glad we got to have her be the final POV.
I also really liked that there were pictures towards the end :D
Good read!
