- Apropos_Of_CrowRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is one of the best fanfictions I've read in months. Which is saying something, because I don't go outside, and I read all day. This novel single handedly beat dozens of others, all of which are more popular, with ease. I've never even played a dark souls game before, and yet, now I want too. (I still won't because I'm terrible at that sort of thing, but you get the point.)
This novel is so well done, and under appreciated (probably because it doesnt fuel the avverage RR readers addiction to the next chapter button.), that I decided to write a review, despite absolutely hating writing reviews. So here I am.
Style: Better than almost anything else I've seen on RR, it gets all the information and emotion across, you know exactly what's going on, and it's almost never boring.
Story: Completely understandable even if you've never played a single dark souls game (like me), the author always makes sure to explain things, not always fully, but enough that you know what's going on even if you previously had no idea.
Grammar: Dang near implacable. Mistakes are so rare and far between, that complaining about them would make me feel like I'm complaining just for the sake of complaining.
Character: I haven't the faintest clue if the characters are true to the story and what not, but they're all good nonetheless. They're motivations and responses are understandable, they're interactions are believable, and every character fits.
i live to see the day that one particular character gets thrown off a cliff, and for another to finally get the hugs they need.
Okay bye, have a good day! - Avid_Reader937Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Explore Lordran through the eyes of Sif, one of the most beloved characters in the franchise.
While playing the game itself, it is pretty much impossible to get a good understanding of the various plotlines. Here, this story shines and gives a deeper insight into the lore of Dark Souls. Details about the story are explained and we get to learn about the backstory and motivations of the other characters biding their time in Lordran.
Not only do we get to know more about this classic game, but there are also a quite a few twists to the original story. This story does not at all follow the rather linear progression from the original game. You can expect things like: What if you did not have to fight this boss? What if this character did not die? What if this character helps the chosen undead?
A small weakness of this story for me is the writing style. While it is definitely decent and does not reduce my reading enjoyment, the paragraphs could be polished a little more (no need to revisit, more content is better!). Additionally, descriptions of the environment are a little lacking. For example, a few sentences regarding the dilapidated state of the Undead Burg while Sif traverses it. Finally, important moments / epic scenes should be embellished more. As an example, when Sif first sees Firelink shrine, it would be nice if there is a short description of the great view and how Sif feels seeing this iconic place for the first time after having just escaped the dark tunnels.
All in all, this is a great read for anyone who has played Dark Souls. However, I would not recommend this story if you have not played the game yet. A lot of knowledge is assumed and reminiscing about the game while reading is definitiely a big part of why I enjoy this fiction. - JeffreyXIIIRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This fic has all the things you need in a great fanfic.
Great use of the lore. The author doesn't just place an op character where they singlehandedly solve everything and complain how everyone is so dumb for not seeing things their way.
Someone who extrapolated from what we got on the original content without making characters different.
An mc that is smart, capable, someone you can understand and sympathize but also still person, with all that entails.
Tldr. A great fic I can easily recommend - KeithwasabiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I thought I knew everything there was to know about Dark Souls, but here I am finding out new tidbits in this lovely story... Can't wait for more! Cammy breathes life into the people you imagined the DS characters to be when extrapolating from their limited dialog and item descriptions, and just creates more bangers when what's there isn't enough. Can't wait to spend more time with the Forest Hunters. Hopefully they'll finally get the time in the sun they deserve.
Style: Clear, functional, communicates the environments and sensations well. Only reason it's not 5 stars is for lack of any standout moments of narrative description.
Grammar: Nearly perfect but for the occasional typo.
Story: Still in a relatively early stage, as far as I can tell, but the direction of the plot makes perfect sense to me and incorporates believable motivations and metaknowledge to make Sif a very interesting protagonist to follow. And maybe... future Lord?
Characters: It's them. Lautrec is an asshole, Sigmeyer is a treasure, Patches has transcended the cycle through pure pettiness. It feels real, easily my favorite part of the writing.
Release more!
