Description

Most first-day-of-school checklists don't include stumbling upon an assassination plot.

Trey’s life in the rural village of Lovarn was simple, if not a little lackluster. But then his enigmatic mentor throws them both into an adventure that promises more excitement than he can handle: infiltrate the prestigious Windrake Academy.

The mission? He can’t tell anyone. And he needs to avoid the mind-reading headmaster.

The one risk he didn’t account for? The gorgeous mages surrounding him on campus. It’s not just their beauty that has him distracted; many of them have their own hidden agendas at play.

First of all thanks for the brilliant story you have written so far
    This story has everything...
Fun elements, investigations, hidden schemes, friendship, love and despair
Trey the main protagonist hasn't led an easy life so far and it isn't getting sny easier soon
Together with his mentor and forster father, who is all about dark magic subject he is asked to teach again and cloak and dagger missions for which he is using Trey to further their common goal as well as some things he is not disclosing
And their stay at the academy is such a dark matter mission as well...
His mentor smuggles Trey who is a very talented magician into the academy posing as a null guardian- one who fights magic without possessing it by the usage of antimagic tack. Not only to have a hidden agent inside the institution but also to protect him from scrutiny because his combination of affinities is far from common and regarded as suspicious if not evil.
But as pne might expect not everything works out as planned... and with that the complications begin
    What to expect...
A fast paced good written story that offers both enough well written action and interaction scenes. A fleshed out world building and relatable characters who are neither infallible nor dumb in their decisions and development... and  backstory that leaves me looking forward to read on
So if you like magic with rogue elements go for it...

I actually made an account just to review this story and one other.  I enjoyed it enough to feel like it was about time to start giving back for the excellent writing.  It is always a gamble selecting a new story out of the 'latest updates' section but I am very glad this story caught my eye.  Also, one correction, I am reviewing this story after chapter 13, not chapter 1.
    Style Score:
I love the style of this story (except for one small issue I'll mention in the Story section).  I will admit to some bias since this type of story is right in my wheelhouse.  Snappy dialog, competent characters, intriguing and mysterious plotlines.  All great.  Even if you don't normally like Harem stories, I strongly encourage you to give this a try.  It is nothing like the vast majority of them.  SO much going on in this story that the multiple women interested in the Main Character is like a nice subtle spice in your new favorite dish.  Enough to add an intriguing depth without changing the original flavor profile too much.
    Story Score:
Here is where the Windrake's Rogue really shines.  At first, I was a little worried as the story starts In Medias Reas. And, honestly, a little too overwrought at that, so I was slightly worried.  Very glad to be wrong.  After the first chapter, the author seems to nail that very difficult balance between showing the reader enough to really enjoy the story but also showing that there is SO much left to discover in the background.
    Grammar Score:
As you can see, my grammar isn't the greatest.  So this is a difficult area for me to review.  The only way I have to judge is - did I notice anything and if so, was it enough to break immersion.  I don't remember anything so 5 stars.
    Character Score:
Another very strong area for this wonderful story.  All of the characters have their own motivations.  They all seem to be competent and motivated by their own goals.  Honestly, one of the reasons I hate most harem stories is that the only competent male is the

    Where did the story go?
It was fun to read till now. It had good character build-up and plot lines.
It also had possibility for future story lines with Trey’s lineage and its impact. Also possible romantic relationships between Trey and the girls.
And now it’s gone, I was hopping to re-read it later :(

Windrake's Rogue is a gripping introduction to what promises to be a dark, action-packed fantasy series. The story wastes no time plunging readers into a world of intrigue, magic, and danger, with a tavern setting that feels alive with its bustling atmosphere and shadowy dealings. The dynamic between Marvin and Trey is a standout, blending humor, mentorship, and an undercurrent of mystery that keeps you guessing about their true motives and past.

    What I Liked:
Strong Writing Basics: The story is well-written, with smooth pacing, snappy dialogue, and a great opening hook. It sets up the stakes, introduces the characters, and builds the world without dumping too much info on you at once.
Dialogue That Pops: The banter between characters is a lot of fun. It feels natural and adds personality to the story.
Quick to the Point: The story doesn’t waste time with endless setup. It gets you to the main location (Windrake Academy) pretty fast, which keeps things moving.
Solid World-Building: Little details, like the teleporter and the academy itself, make the world feel alive and interesting.
Clean Writing: No major grammar issues or awkward sentences here. It’s clear the author knows their stuff.
    Overall Thoughts:
Windrake Rogue has light-hearted, quippy character interactions and dialogue. It moves forward at a good pace, not stalling too long in any one point so far. I’d say it’s an easy read—it doesn’t require a heavy amount of buy-in or initial investment to really get into the story. If you enjoy clearly competent characters, a splash of intrigue, and fantasy school settings, I’d say give this a chance. I’m interested to see where it goes from here!
Additional note: my core review is based on the first three chapters but I did end up reading up to chapter 11 to make sure it was in line with how the story progresses.
